Levi still leads GC ahead of Peter Stetina.

Gina Grain won the women’s race. I believe Kristin Armstrong is still the race leader.

O/T?

Guess the cost of a speeding ticket for going +21 km/h (13 m/h) in a 50 zone in Switzerland.

Now quadruple your guess and your probably getting closer. Yikes! I have even been slowing on the bike in speed zones now.

Very particular about such things in Switzerland. Germany, too, as I understand it.

In Germany, they only care if it's an organized speed trap

They pop up every know and then when the polizei need to make their quota. Doing 95k in a 70k zone, got me a 70 euro ticket the first month I was back over here. What a nice welcome back gift!

and a tiny bit faster was license loss for a month

and not much faster is a # of days salary / jail.

basically it is called a replacement fo jail. "Do you want 10 days jail or wish to “optionally” pay 10 days salary? ) . Stories of 30,000 chf fines, etc (lots of porsches here)

I have been receiving treatment for radiation poison as radars are everywhere (it is illegal to have GPS program identify radar)

I received 3 tickets last week all from last summer and all at before 6am as I picked up friends for cycling events. I get excited before events!

;)

Foreigners, if the rental company tracks you down and if you ignore …. can be arrested and jailed on reentry (a story recently of guy jailed for non-payment from years ago).

Rant over ;) generally I love really Switzerland!

Driving 71 km/h in a 50 km/h zone is not good. Sorry to be humourless about it.

agreed

it takes concentration though …. to never speed … radar everywhere … changing speed limits etc.

I am in general a VERY slow driver (like my cycling)

I am stressed ;)

They've never been popular in Europe

For a real extreme example, I once knew someone who lived in Corfu but had to take his car to Athens to get it serviced. Unfortunately he had spent most of his working life in America and had all but forgotten how to change gears by himself.

And for a little teaser or two

the Giro team presentation will be on 7th of May outside the Palazzo Ducale in St Mark’s Square. At the end of this, the eight previous GT winners who are riding will be taken by boat to the Arsenal for a press conference. No mention of singing gondoliers. Yet. I wonder if any of them will wear their dresses?

And a couple of figures. 870 journos have signed up to follow the Giro, as opposed to 582 last year. Maybe Chris should have tried to auction our own Tifosa for the month. Sold for 200 snuggies to …… And RCS say that 300,000 in the US have already signed up to follow the web coverage. So at what point do they put it on proper TV?

by Monty. on May 1, 2009 4:01 AM EDT reply actions

300,000 in the US signed up for web coverage???

which web coverage? on CTV, where they still don’t actually list confirmed Giro coverage at all?
-the Gold package link from the main page only says “Premium, UCI, Vuelta A Espana” but no Giro, yet it talks about “the 2008 calendar” … so maybe it hasn’t been updated for 2009?

-but the Gold package link I pulled up on a site search says, as someone posted a few days ago (the search function gives this link a date of April 2008, yet the LBL date matches 2009 – if this is the 2009 link, then why could I only find it by a search rather than it being the most prominent at the front)

Please note that the internet rights for the Giro d’Italia are still under negotiation with the rights owners. We are working as swiftly as possible to confirm this event and hope to bring you confirmation in the very near future.
Because of this, we advise prospective customers interested in the current live races (and the races so far this year) to invest in the Premium package. This purchase will be refunded if you choose to upgrade to a Gold or Silver subscription at a later date (NB no later than May 21st). In the event that we are unable to carry the Giro d’Italia we will arrange compensation for Gold North America and Italian Pro Cycling package subscribers.

and of course, their race calendar still says “Coverage TBC” and times are all “TBA” for the Giro. I seem to recall Harold pointing out that just meant the times weren’t confirmed, but seeing the conflicting info elsewhere on the site I’d certainly be thinking that their coverage isn’t confirmed.

Who is zirbecco?

Never mind… Look, before this gets out of hand, perhaps I should clarify that I am simply asking for the head of the Girbecco mascot costume. I’m not advocating decapitation of toys here, people. That would be sick and wrong. But, if someone does manage to get ahold of an actual Ibex with painted horns who is wearing a pink jersey and some tires, then cut that fucker’s head off pronto and send me the carcass. I will roast it and serve it with white beans, a nice tomato and bread salad, and a fine Barolo. You veggies can skip the goat course.

I hadn't thought of it that way

but that does indeed make good sense. I was thinking of it more from an affordability angle since paying out the bounty is going to leave me a little light in the wallet, and Brunello’s are so pricey. But both would do nicely. And you veggies might want to get a nice white, perhaps a Pinot Grigio
