Pais Vasco aka Tour of the Basque Country, Stage One... Live!

First, Let's talk about viewing options
Cycling Fans has the full story and probably umwolverine will provide a couple direct links.
For non-US viewers (and possibly US viewers as well): ETB supposedly will start at 15:55 CET or 9:55 am Eastern. There may well should be other links as well.
For US viewers only: Universal Sports has a geo-restricted feed starting at 9:35 am, Eastern. A few words about this option. I have a Mac and while Safari works fine, Firefox doesn't. Also Windows users supposedly can enlarge the video to fit the screen, but I can't do that on my Mac. Here is the video help page for Universal if you can't get it to work right off.
First, Now about this stage
It's a tough one. Here is the course profile-
Five cat 3 climbs and three cat 2's. The last cat 2, the Alto Lazkaomendi, peaks 7.4 km from the finish. There's a down hill then the last 3.5 km rises about 40 meters.
Who's racing? Contador is the defending champ, Evans came in 2nd, and Evans' new teammate, Dekker, came in 3rd last year. By team:
Astana- Contador, Brajkovic, Horner, Rubiera
Caisse d'Epargne- Lulu, J-Rod, Arroyo, Moreno, Kiryienka (no Valverde)
Saxo- Both Schlecks, Larsson, both Sorensens, etc,
Columbia- Lovkvist, Rogers, Siutsou, Monfort, etc.
Euskaltel- Sam San, Martinez, Nieve; Garmin- Vandevelde, Zabriskie, Pate, Danielson, Hesjedal; Cofidis-Moncoutie; Fuji- Cobo, De La Fuente
Liquigas- Kreuziger, Nibali; Cervelo- Sastre, Gerrans; Lotto- Evans, Dekker, Van Den Broeck; Lampre- Cunego, Bruseghin, Gasparotto;
Katusha- Colom, Pfanenberger; Rabobank- Gesink, Freire, Mollema; Milram- Leeeenos, Wegmann, Knees; Fuji- Cobo, De La Fuente

i think they're interchangeable...
the stock exchanges i go to work use CET
"Wizard's first rule. People are stupid. They will believe anything they want to be true or fear to be true." -- Terry Goodkind
Well they are both valid time zones
But not interchangeable, of course! CET or GMT+1 is the standard Central European Timezone for most of central/western Europe, excluding UK, Portugal (also Iceland, Greenland but no bike races there ;) ). CEST is for the same region but is the daylight savings variant (summer time) and is the one that we’re on now: GMT+2. So at the moment, there is no CET …
Have I been trolled?
it seems rather strange that the stock exchange releases don't switch to the CEST

Bert jumped out of the pack in the last little climb.
i am wondering if anyone’s gonna do the same again…

I’m flying to the number 1 position because of him

Yeah you too!
Uhm Nieve, Leenos, P. Velits, Gasparotto, Martens, Mollema, Gesink, Cunego and Sivtsov… You?

I'll try to beat you with:
Contador, Davis, Kiryienka, Roche, Possoni, Cunego, Gasparotto, Fedrigo, Dekker, Wegmann and Cobo.
For Dekker and Gasparotto it is their last chance. If they don’t perform here I will be forced to put them back to the junior league.
Why is Zeke not here?
start list here

I want to know, where is Igor Anton??
He was on the original list
but it seems they pulled him out. That injury from the Angliru has proved troublesome. Maybe he didn’t feel great after CyL?
Same here.
I think he’s planning on the Tour and Vuelta but not sure….being lazy about digging out the articles!
no idea whatsoever
I’m sure it’s very difficult!
still, I expect you to dig out some gossip of Igor…
Which words and phrases?
The usual, I guess. “Hello”, “good morning”, “good evening”, “five beers, please”, “no, I did not kill your cat”, “I’m sorry officer, I must have missed the speed limit” and “I’m drunk and injured, where is the nearest hospital?”.

I'm quite good at anything related to pelota,
you know, things like serve, hook, drop, championship, doubles, and numbers etc etc. I understand things like ‘……wins the point’ and ‘nice serve’. Apart from that, the usual stuff…but not the drunk and injured one!
My lucky 7:
Schleck the Younger, Dekker, Lovkvist, Leenooos, Jesus, Swift, Meier.
Team Red Shorts--Let us show you what we've got
So this is where all the teams with weak cobble-squads are hiding this week...
I’ve got 8 racing in Pais Vasco: Contador, Andy, Nicki Sorensen, LL Sanchez, Di Gregorio, Colom, Rogers, Cunego. That would make one pretty damn good team lineup for the race, wouldn’t it?
I’m hoping for my Paris-Nice boys to do well + first real showing of the Ardennes squad.
Ô col Bayard, Ô Tourmalet, à côté du Galibier, vous êtes de la pale et vulgaire bibine !
thanks
I sure hope it’ll turn out to be a good choice.
I’ll need some points here to cover all the losses in this week’s other races.
Ô col Bayard, Ô Tourmalet, à côté du Galibier, vous êtes de la pale et vulgaire bibine !
12 for me as well
Contador, Rubiera, Samsan, Nieve, Davis, Chris Sorensen, Moreno, Petrov, Mollema, Nibali, Cobo and Vazquez
9 for me. I swear Anton was on the lists before but he's not there now.
Contador, Barredo, Lulu, Colom, Pinotti, Monfort, Mollema, Fedrigo, Kreuziger
Did Barredo start?
He was among the injured yesterday.

Pasado el kilómetro 9,5, los cuatro escapados han aumentado su ventaja, que asciende ya a los 5:30 sobre el pelotón principal.

In honour of the Vuelta a Pais Vasco
I will now go cycling in my blue points jersey of the VaPV, with Euskaltel print.
they're the real heroes of that race.

Note on Mac zooming
About that window size things on a Mac, you know you can make any window contents bigger by doing option-command-equals and then smaller with option-command-minus. That is, hold down the two keys and press = or -. So you can make the video as big as you want. (This is enable on the Universal Access preferences if for some reason it is turned off for you.)
Here's the thing
I tried that yesterday on the Cyclocross video, just to be sure. It didn’t work on the video even though the text around the video got bigger. Tell me that it’s working for you.
I love Google Translate
Tselinograd has also placed some of his men at the head of the peloton.
Who? Oh, Astana.
Team Red Shorts--Let us show you what we've got
For those of you who like such things:
’The city of Astana was originally called “Akmola,” which means “white grave” in Turkish. In the ’50s, when Kruschev wanted people to settle the virgin lands of the Kazakh steppes, he renamed Akmola as Tselinograd, “Tselina” meaning “virgin lands” in Russian and Ukranian (making Tselinograd the rough equivalent of “Virginia City”). It got changed back to Akmola after the fall of the Soviet Union, then renamed Astana when the capital was moved there—“Astana” means “capital” in Kazakh. Source
There. Now you know everything except why Google decided to translate Astana into one of its former names. Pro-Soviet bias? Let’s start an internet rumor…
Team Red Shorts--Let us show you what we've got

I am running Firefox on a PC

Jens Voigt doesn’t know where you live, but he knows exactly where you will die.
No problems in Firefox on my netbook. Just click and go.
Actually, I got a blank screen the first time I clicked, but hit refresh and it came up immediately.

And I think I caught a glimpse of Dekker once—well, it was a Lotto guy with hair sticking out of his helmet, anyway.

Earthquake in Italy
A not-insignificant one. The epicenter appeared to be in L’Aquila, which last showed up as a stage finish at the Giro in 2005.

"Never swing a small stick. " Andy Hampsten
Still, I won't count on them not abandoning him...
…just when it will cause maximum humiliation and psychological damage.
emmmm
totally lost here…
I was wondering about Noval though, those two used to be joint to the hip….
still are until the road goes up, then sbj and chechu take over

Right
Noval not on the startlist
1 CONTADOR VELASCO Alberto Spain
2 ZUBELDIA AGIRRE Haimar Spain
3 BRAJKOVIC Janez Slovenia
4 NAVARRO GARCIA Daniel Spain
5 RUBIERA VIGIL José Luis Spain
6 HORNER Christopher United States
7 HERNANDEZ BLAZQUEZ Jesus Spain
8 KIREYEV Roman Kazahkstan
I'm digging the lack of commentary.
Wouldn’t work if it were a confusing race, but one small group of escapees getting chased down by peloton I can follow without trouble. I’m on full screen and enjoying the scenery.
