Viewer Suggestions for Universal Sports
IMHO, Universal Sports has done an outstanding job thus far with their Giro coverage. The free streaming coverage seems pretty bulletproof (who would have imagined such things were possible?), the broadcast coverage is excellent for those of us lucky enough to get broadcast coverage (better than Versus since they leave out all the rider profile crap and show the racing), and the commentary is, well, acceptable? Worth the money I paid for it? I have seen comments scattered about on such issues as Flash video, etc., but I thought it might be neighborly, given our long history here at the Cafe of helping out our cycling broadcaster friends with our collective feeback, to consolidate comments in one spot. We are givers here. We give...
My only gripe thus far is that their web interface makes it pretty challenging to get to the as-live video without running across a big, flashing spoiler. ZoeRochelle posted a direct link to the cycling schedule, which helps, but I wish I had seen that yesterday when I went to the site looking for video of the Milan parade (my Tivo cut off the broadcast some time before the "racing" started so I had no idea what transpired) only to see "Cav wins it!", or something like that. That is annoying... so unless you have that link saved, there is no way to get to a video without knowing how the stage ended. Personally, I would like to see that changed. Go ahead and put up some flashy pictures from the day, just don't make them of the stage winner standing on the podium, or announce the results in 25 point type on top. Nobody will buy the cow if the milk is free, people. Keep us guessing.
Enough out of me... feel free to chime in below with your suggestions, comments, praise, bile as you see fit.

I couldn’t expect more, and I’d be happy with less. Other than Stage 8, when I could never get it to load, it has been flawless. For whatever reason, I couldn’t get Stage 8 to work, no matter which browser I used, or how many times I refreshed.
I’m assuming they’re getting video from a shared feed and don’t have any control over the images they get so that would exonerate them of the overzealous use of Lance imagery.
Going forward, it would be nice to have a higher res stream. Really though, they have performed well beyond my expectations (which were admittedly low- thanks CTV).

I had this problem with stages 7 & 8
On both I got endless buffering, no amount of refresh worked. Then with a sleep and caffeine inspired flash of insight, I opened up the archived video of the previous day, which played fine. I stopped that, and the live video loaded right up for me. Who knows why this worked or if it was simple conicidence, but if you are having trouble with buffering the live feed, give it a try.

I agree on the spoilers.
Its extremely annoying

I've been very pleased. Can't get it to work at the office, but that's the firewall's fault, not Universal's.
Would like a little less obsession with Lance (I know they don’t control the video feed, but they do control what they say), but that’s a very minor complaint. I understand they have to feed the machine.
And compared to ctv? Well, that’s just night and day. Not having to log in & pick the stupid resolution and go through screen after screen of Phoenix University ads, etc., is just dreamy. Will still take the ctv commentators though – they rule.

My take
Pros:
*Free! (Although I would pay and used to pay to be a member when they were WCSN)
*Works flawlessly for me on Mac and Windows (since the change to Flash)
*Acceptable commentating on the online version
*No obtrusive ads. The ads they do have don’t bother me. (CTV ads are horrible and we pay to watch!)
Cons:
*Spoilers everywhere on the site.
*No Anthony & Brian
*Although acceptable as is, I much prefer 2 commentators because the one guy gets monotonous after awhile
*Takes too long for the Video on Demand to be posted (4-5 hours is a bit much)
I am especially unhappy about the spoilers. This has been a big issue with US for a long time. I have complained about it numerous times (even emailed their customer service) but they don’t sem to care. Luckily I kept that URL of a video list without spoilers. I can’t find it on the actually site navigation.
US puts spoilers up for every sport. I don’t get why they do that.

Free
Free: that’s big. If CTV dissapeared and Universal took over cycling coverage I wouldn’t miss a thing. Free is a deal maker and covers any difficiencies IMO.
Commentary- Acceptable. No, it’s not Anthony and Brian or that guy who was the CTV commentator during last year’s Vuelta but he’s acceptable. I’d rather have two commentators too.
Accessibility- As Cyclingrish said above, it’s so much easier to access than CTV.
The Lance focus? Seriously, that;‘s a very minor issue. Just wait till the Tour and you’ll se what an over focus on Lance is. Most of us don’t care or need the Lance coverage but face it, he’s bigger than Cycling and not only in this country.
Spoilers- That sounds like a fixable problem- hopefully. They might not fix it though.
TV- Unfortunately I have DISH and don’t get Universal on TV. Bummer.

yo, if you have DISH, you get rai-international and get the 1 hour delayed start italian coverage
and, if you’re in an area where universal sport is available as a local tv channel, then usually DISH and/or DirecTV will provide it in the local channel package

two thumbs up from me, too!
i couldn’t get the online (at work) version to work until later in the week but now it’s good.
i’ve really, really been pleased with the tv coverage – as i said in my earlier post and to reiterate a point above, it has way fewer features (and repeats and more repeats of those) than vs. the cameras stay on the riders.
my wish list? more on the tv coverage – start earlier, give more than 2 hrs a day and go live.

.02 On Broadcast
Owing to work and the like, I’ve been watching recorded footage from Universal’s 9am PST broadcast in the evenings.
This means at least two things. Sadly, I can’t hang out with/lurk among the PdC crowd in the AM lest I be spoilt. I also can’t browse other sites for “live updates” that would provide more locative and time information on the riders across the course.
I do love the focus on the racing, but think they might have more features and filler if they’d had more time to prep for the broadcasts. They have dialed up the Versus-like bumper the last couple of days.
The commentators are solid, but don’t always communicate the narrative thread of the race – this is most disappointing at the end of each stage. They do say that we’re coming up on the exciting conclusion, but this is not the same thing as communicating that excitement as they announce. You can chalk this up as another “No Anthony & Brian” or “No Paul and Phil”.
One thing that sticks out to me, is the lack of onscreen information. You get the occasional head of course, and now the gaps, but I find myself not knowing exactly what’s up more often than I do on, say, Versus. The team time trial coverage seemed particularly rugged in this regard.
All that aside, you can’t beat free. Especially when it’s pretty good.

I think the lack of race updats on screen (km to go, breakaway members, etc.)
is a feed issue straigt from the video feed supply not US. Anyone know for sure?

I like
the goofily translated captions that RCS provides.
Someone needs to tell them that “bunch packed” is not REALLY a good translation of “gruppo compatto”
Although nothing tops the one that flashed briefly today: “lead of the head.”

Those are quite humorous.
The commentator that calles the breakaway the “escapees” but prounces it so its undistinguishable is funny too. I know what it means now but at first I could not tell what he was talking about.

spoilers are soooo bad
I’m sure somebody’s just trying to be clever and show all of the latest headlines, but it really ruins it to have the day’s results shown to you before you can watch the day’s stage.

one word of advice when tivoing live racing -- BUFFER BUFFER BUFFER
if you’re recording live racing (or near-to-as rai-international provides for the giro) you need to set large buffers… rule of thumb for the giro and the vuelta (tve-international), 30 mins ahead and at least an hour after scheduled program…. for the tdf (versus), 5 mins before and at least 1.5 hrs after scheduled program (and even at 1.5 hrs after scheduled program, i’ve had to adjust that to 3 hrs when a stage has gone long)

Has anyone used the Giro Plus service (http://giroplus.universalsports.com/)? I would consider paying the $3 for a stage just to support Universal if I had a better internet connection.

is it still the original guy?
someone was saying that the English RAI commentator (as seen on the live online broadcast of Universal) was now someone different, as of a few days ago (I haven’t had the need or desire, or more to the point the ability to wake up early enough, to actually check for myself since last Saturday when RAI-I didn’t have coverage).

Universal now have a guy on the ground
Tim Malone (or Maloney, it’s hard to tell from the Italian pronunciation). He was on Processo yesterday, asking Menchov a question in Italian, which Alessandra translated into Spanish, Menchov answered in a mixture of Italian and Spanish, she translated the Spanish bits back into Italian very quickly and the Universal guy nodded his head.

By the end of the Giro we’ll know all the riders’ birthdays…and… well not much more.
Except for one of the mountain stage where they had two guys who actually knew what they were talking about, the rest of Universal’s coverage is a joke. Appently, Versus was even worse! wow!
I miss cycling.tv

well I wouldn't go that far
I like that I don’t have to go through hoops/multiple screens/steam selection mess to get to the live stream and don’t have to use only one browser to get there.
So yes, I would say that I miss the c.tv commentators but I certainly do not miss their crappy non-working service.
by lyne on May 21, 2009 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I assume you mean that the commentators are a joke
The broadcast guys are not bad, but the online guy sucks. And the feed quality and consistency is so much better than Cycling TV ever was, or apparently ever could be. I would love to hear Anthony and Brian, or Martin and Mags, but I will settle for what Universal is giving me, which is racing that I can see without all the fucking nonsense and drama that is Cycling TV, or the incessant rider profiles and Lance rah rah that is Versus.

i did mean the commentators
Sure i’ll give you that the feed quality is better on universal, but “crappy non-working service”? Watched most of the classics this spring (some live, some on demand), and i think it worked pretty good. Did not mind the few hoops that much.
Maybe my standards on this are not to high, i don’t know.
What i care about is what is happening in the race, why is this team working? is this guy going for the stage win, to get some time on GC or just going up the road to help his leader in the mountain later on?…that kind of stuff…Universal is so bad at this, that it is just ruining everything else.
Tried watching Universal and listen to eurosport (with sean kelly) but there was about 1 min difference between their feed so that didn’t work too well.
So let’s just hope they get some help for the commentator for the rest of the Giro and we will all be happy!
by marsajax on May 22, 2009 8:57 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm not missing that--but maybe it's because of PdC
and getting my own sense of who’s in it for what?
I often felt the commentators elsewhere were either stating the obvious or making assertions based on not much, that didn’t particularly pan out. I mean, if there’s a breakaway, and the teams with guys in the break are not working, and the teams without guys in the break are working, you can spin that out into 5 minutes of commentary, 3 or 4 times, but you’re not really demonstrating insight. And if a strong rider with no GC hopes gets a bit itchy at 30 km, you can posit an interest in the stage win…and if it turns out he’s actually just getting ready to take a nature break, you make some comment about him not having the legs after all, and you sound like you know what’s going on.
by JFS_PGH on May 22, 2009 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
getting my own sense or who's in it for what
Agree but i don’t mind a bit of input from the commentator. Find it interesting to compare and like to learn (when the commentator is good). Race situations aren’t always obvious.
The new guy seems better than the one from the first stages so thats it, i stop complaining and just watch the race.
by marsajax on May 22, 2009 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Another thing I really like -
On the live coverage, US stays with the podium even if the commenting stops. Very nice (as opposed to ToC tour tracker where we usually got Frankie and that other guy talking for some extended period of time and then signing off with no podiums.) It’s probably a race organization difference (i.e., nice, fast podiums), but it’s a treat regardless.
by cg. on May 21, 2009 2:50 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Overly compressed
I work with video all day, so I am sensitive to MPEG compression quality.
What’s shown on TV is very poor. I understand reduced bit rate for the internet, but there is no excuse for such crappy quality on TV.
Perhaps this is what they are getting from RAI, but I still don’t like it. :)

From Universal Sports Online and Television
Thanks to Podium for providing the programmers at Universal Sports with valued input on our coverage of the Tour of Italy.
Although months of negotiations took place, the actual deal between US and Giro was not agreed on until Thursday, two working days before the race started. The entire network organization suddenly had to react. An experienced video crew was deployed from the US to do interviews and fill in stories germane to US viewers. Announcer Todd Gogulski canceled PA announcing commitments. Our man on the ground Tim Maloney was uncovered in Italy ready to receive the crew and integrate them into the massive Giro org & start filing daily intelligence reports to the announcers. Graphics people, a director, research staff….all had to start 24/7 work to tool up a whole network to start Grand Tour TV & online coverage. And ad staff blasted out to cycling endemic advertisers and others. A multi-year Giro deal was signed.
Thank you Podium for providing a valued forum which we will review reguilarly. As the network’s cycling consultant I will assure you that constructive feedback will be seen by key decision-makers. This network is absolutely commited to not only presenting cycling but do it in a refreshing way, more interactive and more feature-laden than others. We are eager to learn from Giro feedback.
I ask that as we review your input, that you make it clear between our distinctily different coverages: 1) online at Universalsports.com with live morning feeds from Eurosport voiced by various english commentator(s). 2) Univeral Sports TV available on cable with a noon ET 2 hour show with Steve Schlanger & Todd Gogulski, repeated in prime time.
Finally, if you are not able to get Universal Sports TV on your cable or satellite provider, LET THEM KNOW. Providers are very responsive to volumes of requests and we must get US on every delivery system as soon as possible. This network is committed to acquiring MANY major stage races, Classics and Worlds. Thanks and we look forward to more feedback and suggestions.

Welcome Michael
I think the fact that Universal pulled it together in a couple of days is simply amazing. Folks who comment here have a pretty extensive knowledge of cycling and have been watching it via every media source that has attempted to show it, so they know what they like and what they don’t like. Our collective expectations are high, so take that for what it’s worth. The beauty of this place is that you can count on honest feedback in real time. So keep up the good work.
FYI kids, Michael Aisner is the guy who built the Coors Classic into the legendary race it became.

Very good to see you here.
I am comfortable in speaking on behalf of all PdC contributors when I say that we welcome and encourage Universal’s expanded embrace of pro cycling. As Jimbo notes, we’re a fairly demanding bunch, but we’re also pretty understanding when it comes to legitimate obstacles. We probably want to see you and Universal succeed in this area as much as you do, and I hope we can all help make that happen.

"committed to acquiring MANY major stage races, Classics and Worlds"
then can you please make sure that (where possible) your online rights include Canada and not just the US, as you have for the Giro? Because no broadcaster in Canada seems interested in any cycling other than the Tour (other than CBC showing Worlds highlights 2-3 weeks later a few years ago), and at this time it isn’t possible to get Universal Sports TV coverage here (unless one lives near the border and near a large US city likely to be able to receive the free-to-air signals – I highly doubt the CRTC = regulatory body is going to let any Canadian cable or satellite provider carry Universal Sports TV as the Canadian sports networks would protest vehemently about their potential lost revenue). So, online is likely to be our only option and hopefully we don’t get forgotten. thanks.
