open letter to giro broadcasters:
Howdy, G'day, etc.:
We know that many of you cycling media types peek in here to PdC. Well . . . that is . . . the English speakers; Auro, Davide, and Allessandra we're not so sure about. Thanks for the shout-outs guys.
Cycling.tv guys (especially Anthony and Brian--you's guys rock)--we know you're aware of how much we dislike the technical and customer service glitches, so it's worth reminding you how much we appreciate the insights and connections you bring to the race. (By connections, I mean stuff as cool as being able to phone up Scott Sunderland in the CSC car while O'Grady was soloing in to the win. That was a good one). And Brian's accent almost makes up for him not being Auro.
Versus . . . Is there a bike race going on amidst all those commercials and promos? And if so, are Phil and Paul watching it with a special Bruce-delay (new-comers: see the glossary)?
Enough of that: here's the point--Long-time readers will have put up with at least one of my rants about what English-speaking cycling broadcasting should be about. Newcomers, consider your self lucky. I know what I'd like (and if I don't get it, I turn the sound off). Whatever.
But what are the rest of us wanting out of race announcing?
(note: R Mc reserves the right to rant at some point in the future about the strangeness of terms like "preventative" and "commentator" that are afflicted with a non-essential syllabic hiccup).

Do you like this story?

all i want is the race commentary... none of this in-the-car-crap, interviews with sponsors, etc....

Especially in the one day races
sometimes you wish they would focus on what is actually happening in the race. In GT’s that other stuff is pretty essential to maintain interest though.
What you basically want is someone who can properly identify riders and tell what timegaps and riders are relevant to the action.
I'm just hoping there are easily accessible broadcasts to North America...
beyond that, I won’t complain ;-). I mean, it was announced a few days ago that Versus wasn’t covering it (not that Versus helps me anyway in Canada, but more likely that CTV could have tagged on to that if Versus did have coverage) – there’s a fanpost about how RAI-International TV (that some of us get on cable/digital cable) doesn’t seem to be showing the Giro this year (or at least, not the opening day – that’s the only day of their schedule during the Giro that’s been released so far).
And yesterday, I posted in another thread in response to “And RCS say that 300,000 in the US have already signed up to follow the web coverage.” My question was, what web coverage – cycling.tv has conflicting info posted and lists Giro coverage as “to be confirmed” and times “TBA” which isn’t very reassuring – they have 2 links dated 2008 but that have the 2009 Giro or other race dates listed (that I had to search for) that state:
Please note that the internet rights for the Giro d’Italia are still under negotiation with the rights owners. We are working as swiftly as possible to confirm this event and hope to bring you confirmation in the very near future.
Because of this, we advise prospective customers interested in the current live races (and the races so far this year) to invest in the Premium package. This purchase will be refunded if you choose to upgrade to a Gold or Silver subscription at a later date (NB no later than May 21st). In the event that we are unable to carry the Giro d’Italia we will arrange compensation for Gold North America and Italian Pro Cycling package subscribers.
and, the packages link from their main site doesn’t even list the Giro at all. (I put more info and links in my original comment).
Sorry for not following up your earlier comment
I got the figures from a story over on Tuttobiciweb and I was sure that I’d linked back to the original story. Whoops, it looks like I forgot that bit. So here you are. It doesn’t give any sort of source, and looks like it came from a press release that the Giro people sent out just to get themselves warmed up ready for next week. It does look a little odd now. Maybe Chris or Tifosa got the same release and could clarify things. Maybe they didn’t. 300,000 trying to find a chinese feed seems much more likely to me.
I accuse Versus
of getting better – at least Craig Hummer, and even Trautwig are better than the ‘American talking heads’ of the past.
PL could let one of the other guys do the play-by-play, It’s annoying when they cover the race in tape delay, and he still makes these gaffes.
But, the drug coverage and specifically the repeated defense for Landis, just such a bad move, really damaged both BR and PS’s credibility for me. Voting for cover-up, continuing the culture, and then how could anyone ask a young person to even watch along, let alone get into bike racing?
BR: “I think the French cooked the whole thing up.”
Anyways, this went on for some time, always offensive, not ‘balanced,’ including PS weighing in as a chemist to negate Landis’ test results. Bike racing: the dirtiest sport, where even the announcers are chemical scientists.
Anyways, before working on improving the announcers, most of whom I really like, the sport has to clean up enough to be explainable to the casual fan without having a huge doping conversation, and that is not happening, at least not this year.
I do hope the Giro is on RAI – that is my favorite bicycling coverage, for sure.
But if it is not, then maybe that Universal Sports can pick it up – they are showing repeats of Pais Vasco everyday, along with classic tri, and MTB, so maybe they are interested.
Perhaps the weak market for the GIRO in US just doesn’t help RAI in other, more important negotiations…or something.

RAI's opening coverage
For those who want to see Lance and Captain Danilo being rowed down the canals of Venice from San Marco to the Arsenal.
Next Friday, RAI will have an hour of coverage of the ceremonial stuff at 17:00 local time. Or if you are a real addict you can track down RAI Sport Piu and watch four and a quarter hours of the stuff from 14:45. No actual cycling, but hey, it’s the Giro. Expect lots of goat.
actually, the presentation is on thursday at 15.15 local.. followed by an hour special

oops, 16.15 local... according to rai sport piu schedule....
"Wizard's first rule. People are stupid. They will believe anything they want to be true or fear to be true." -- Terry Goodkind
That looks like an extra couple of hours of pre-presentation coverage
(and thanks, I hadn’t noticed it). But I think that the programme on Friday on RAI3 is the real thing, that’s just a teaser. Check the schedules here (And be patient – RAI used to have one of the most straightforward TV guides I knew, but they redesigned it a while back for this flash abomination that periodically resets itself to RAI1 today for some unknown reason. Flash, spit!).
rai tre doesn't show anything giro related for friday... it's on rai sport piu
and, yes, flash sucks big time…

Are we looking at the same page?
I see Ven 8 Rai Tre 17:00 “Venezia Ciclismo Speciale 92° Giro d’Italia”
Seeing I can't get RAI, and their online coverage is Geo-Restricted
this conversation is really infuriating me…..lucky bastards….grumble……grumble…grumble…
In Chauncey we trust!
I was posting this stuff
partly because I thought that people here knew various illicit ways to get RAI coverage. And partly to gloat.
You don't fool me, you were straight up gloating, nothing else
I can try watching RAI sport on TV Ants, but it was very choppy today, same with all the other streams found on various sites.
In Chauncey we trust!
yeah, saw that...

What do the rest of us want out of race announcing?
based on my following the opinions and general tenor of discussion on this blog for a couple years, the topics that have united us and divided us, I think it is eminently clear that the bulk of the cycling-watching community want nothing so much as more Enzyte commercials. Or perhaps “buffering…”
