indeed

what i like is the calculated grace of the lead out and the totally confident positioning of EBH – young guys who make it look like clockwork. Cav just had to stay with it and put the hammer down at the right moment.

results like this are the kind of things that make for personnel

trimming for ALL the teams without any results stage-win-wise, etc.

11 stages so far

9 stages won by LPR or Columbia

2 stages – everyone else.

Some bods in the RAI studio are whingeing about Tyler

they reckon that he bumped porr Alessandro off Cav’s wheel

he's certainly been getting bumped around enough

It looked normal on the move too

Others defended Farrar, I was just surprised that anyone thought it was unusual. Cav saw nothing, it was all behind him

by Monty. on May 20, 2009 11:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Pettachi bumped him off in stage 2

so I dont know what they are beyatching about

by Cycho on May 20, 2009 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Petacchi spoke about this later

“If what happened to me had happened to Cipollini, things would have been different. There isn’t much respect any more. Farrar didn’t behave properly.”

The problem happened a few seconds to the capture above. Another rider was drifting back (black and white striped shorts) , Farrar went to the right of him and came back to fight with Allan Davis for Cav’s wheel, which boxed Petacchi in and forced him to brake.

Looks to me like what happens in sprints, and as Cassani noted, if Ermeti hadn’t made a silly attempt to escape for the win at 2k to go he could have been there to give a leadout of sorts.

by Monty. on May 20, 2009 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions

The problem with Petacchi's crying . . .

. . . is that it is about 2nd place. Nobody was coming around King Cav today.

He’s got time, but I’m not sure if it’s enough.

Seems to me that's actually the general British reaction to Cav.

(amongst that small minority of people who even know who he is, that is).

by civetta on May 20, 2009 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Most Brits i have come across

either haven’t heard of him or worship him.
I can admire and respect that he is a tremendous sprinter but i wonder if you stuck him in the position McEwen found himself in last year’s TDF (no leadout men etc) would he still prevail? Because he has some awesome guys sacrificing themselves for him. And also i’m not too keen on full on domination, i like variation in results rather than ohh it’s a bunch sprint, i can already fill in Cav as the winner then…
And yes he may be the best Brit we’ve had in a while but he doesn’t represent us very well with his comments. I don’t necessarily want him to not speak out at all but perhaps phrase stuff better and be slightly more respectful.

I support the Spanish Armada.

by Helsy33 on May 20, 2009 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions

The Columbia train is certainly not to be messed with

& Cavendish was spot on in Milan when he said it was extraordinary to have a guy wearing the ciclamina jersey (i.e. Boasson Hagen) leading out for him.

But if you remember, for instance, the stage into Nîmes in the Tour last year, when Cav got completely isolated & boxed in, coming round the outside to win, well, you could argue that was a as McEwen-esque a victory as you could possibly wish for.

As for dominance, well, Petacchi & Farrar have beaten him this year. Possibly why he was dissing Farrar this afternoon. As for his mouth, on the one hand I do wish sometimes he’d shut the hell up (this afternoon, for instance) but on the other, thank god at least someone has survived the inevitable pre-season media training session unscathed.

Anybody found how much time Di Luca reckoned he would lose in the TT?

In my vague recollection:
2 minutes to Leipheimer
1:30 to Menchov
nothing to Sastre or Basso

by tedvdw on May 20, 2009 12:54 PM EDT reply actions

....still think DiLuca should be worried about Sastre....

He has been looking stronger each day and I do think he will gain some time on DiLuca tomorrow. Sastre can descend….and I looks like he is keeping it together until week 3.

by steph- on May 20, 2009 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

Sastre looked the strongest man yesterday behind Di Luca. Closed two gaps for Menchov.

by tedvdw on May 20, 2009 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Sastre did look great, I thought

I think tomorrow suits Menchov better and he’s closer on time to Diluca. But in the long run, I tend to like Sastre’s chances better, despite Menchov’s win on the early mountain stage.

Update on Vdv
The breaks were found with additional imaging tests which uncovered the fractures on three “spinous processes” – the attachment point for muscles and ligaments in the back. Tests also revealed a cracked pelvis in addition to the two broken ribs which were revealed the day of the crash.

Dumb Question of the Day

Why is Eusktael Euskardi Team not at Giro???

Alpe Du Huez is my favorite place on earth!!!!!!

by mrmorales on May 20, 2009 1:53 PM EDT reply actions

Their squad just isn't big enough..

They said they would rather the place went to another team because they don’t have the riders to put over there and would rather concentrate on the TDF and of course the Vuelta which is more home turf. Reduced size squad this year.
And so that’s mostly why Xacebeo Galicia are there, organisers called them their answer to the Euski boys :)

same thing

with cofidis and fdjeux…they’re protour, but just a bit small. especially cofidis. they were originally planning on downsizing weren’t they? i liked you points about cav by the way. he gives good quote but he’s no boardman.

Also, their fans (apart from me!) and sponsors aren't the least bit interested in anything which happens in Italy.

It’s the third most important of the grand tours for them for sure. Last year they looked like they wanted to be anywhere else. They look like they’re hitting Catalunya pretty well instead…two in the top 4 and top of the teams table at the mo. If Zubeldia hadn’t jumped ship after all these years they’d have 3 in the top 4.

Yeah...i think they have slightly?

Not too sure there. I’m ok with the smaller French teams but i’m not as knowledgable about them as the Spanish teams etc.

And cheers, i get a lot of stick for not praising Cav enough or not getting excited when he wins, but i’m not an outright hater, it’s always good to see a Brit winning, i just can’t buy into the loving thing, don’t like his attitude. Guess at least he usually credits the team in his wins/quotes but he’s definitely no Boardy.

I support the Spanish Armada.

Yes, both Cofidis and FDJ

shrank their rosters some, and didn’t really have enough team to do all three grand tours. They’ll save it for France. Bbox has made it into a lot of early breaks. They just don’t survive ;-)
