Giro d'Italia Stage 15: Post-Stage Thread

Grio-poststage_medium

Dangerous but not decisive was the guess for this stage pre-race and dangerous but not decisive was the outcome. Some atacking by Basso, Garzelli and a little one by Di Luca came to naught.

Top five on the day:

1/ Leonardo Bertagnolli  Diqui

2. Serge Pauwells Cervello .54

3. Marco Pinotti, Comumbia

4. Lars Bak, Saxo

5. Marco Marzano, Lampre .56

I presume no change in the GC.

Oh- and Catalunya is over too. Check the fan post by majope for the final VDS points there.

Lyne and Gav chatting on twitter about it.

I love C, not because he rocks as a cyclist, but because deep down he's a band geek! LOL!

My French isn't great but he certo says he was called back to help Sastre

and he sounds mighty pissed off. As would anyone be.

i think Menchov

was lucky today. Maybe it was his diplomatic skills, but if he and his team don’t have more carefull, he could ends like Contador in PN…

by semprenaroda on May 24, 2009 11:51 AM EDT reply actions

meh

IMHO the break by Basso never had a chance. Too much of a flat run in

ON the other hand, it does expose the Rabobank team as fairly weak, meaning that the rest of the way Manchov is on his own. He’s gonna get attacked left and right tomorrow.

by ursula on May 24, 2009 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Yep

Tomorrow is for Liquigas and Astana, the two deepest teams, to play their cards. Make Menchov and Di Luca choose between who to follow and risk losing big time.

by ursula on May 24, 2009 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions

They allready did it in dutch

He had to stop, van Poppel ordered him to do so.

Pauwels himself couldn’t just keep racing… If Sastre would’ve lost time, the team would be furious. Still the worst mistake i’ve seen in a long long long long looooooong time.

Were convinced that Pauwels would’ve outsprinted Bertagnolli. They were not impressed with Cervelo.

What kind of deal though?

You mean Diqi helping Sastre? Don’t see that happening.

by ursula on May 24, 2009 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Why not?

Simoni and Zapatero are out of the GC. Diq could be of help these next days? I doubt if that deal was made though.

by Jens on May 24, 2009 12:06 PM EDT up reply actions

why not?

It might have been cash, of course.

Bertag is a local – lives near the finish. Probably a stage worth buying for Savio, especially with Simoni dropping like a rock out of the classification today.

I wouldn't mind

but it’ was so blatantly poorly thought through.

I called them morons but I think we have to remember that the Cervelo DS’s have little experience at this level. I think they freaked. Possibly Sastre was giving them hell for being alone when they had resources nearby and they made a bad call.

by Jens on May 24, 2009 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Tell me more

I mean how much experience are we talking about? The Cervelo DS’s in Belgium sure were smart.

No no, They are testing equipment on the CTT

They wanted to make sure their new experimental brakes worked under descending-conditions.

Anyone knows where I can find the expected arrival of tomorrow's stage?

Or is there a site where I can see the entire race somewhere at night? (Europe)

I have exams, might have to race to my own home to see the last part of the stage

not in the evening

raisport piu does reshow at least the final hour or more of the prior day’s stage… but that’s in the am…

lately, it’s been showing a complete repeat of the stage in the early am local time, starting btwn 2am and 4am

check this site for the schedule. use the yellow arrows to move forward and backward in the schedule.

I took "entire race" to mean the whole race

as in from roll out to finish. Nobody shows that. ToC was the only ones to do that on the tour tracker and that was only because they were providing the coverage. I wish someone would show the whole race, but RAI owns the coverage for this race and they have never done that…

my understanding is that they use to show the entire race... several years ago

and they do show quite a bit when you add in the live images from the si gira and aspettando il giro shows

Two things before I call it a night

1. I love these stages that surprise me. OK so it didn’t change much in the end but I think it’s great that Liquigas and Basso try these little stunts to shake up the race. With better luck they might have gotten more out of it. In the end it proves that a parcours is what you make of it. To those who want and dare there are always opportunities.

2. Chris , you may be a bit surprised at the big jump we made today from Thread No 1 directly to thread No 3. Have no fear. This netapp. for Drew will prevent such events in the future.

by Jens on May 24, 2009 4:06 PM EDT reply actions

Interesting

So it was Carlos who panicked. I’m not sure that he actually had a reason to do so.

Bork, bork, bork!

by TheFigurehead on May 24, 2009 5:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Makes no sense but it seems to be true, they really blew it today

Combination of panicking and poor communication I guess, as LA twittered after the race… “I wouldn’t want to be at the Cervelo dinner table”.

I hate it for Pauwels, you could see during the race he didn’t not want to drop back, he knew they had more than a good chance to stay away even then. Suckage.

by sminer on May 24, 2009 6:12 PM EDT up reply actions

+1. A bizarre situation.

The Basso group was always going to come back and Sastre didn’t need Pauwels there. I’m not surprised he didn’t want to stop. He’d have won that stage I reckon. Poor guy…I feel gutted for him!

Adrenalina Italiana!

by Albertina on May 24, 2009 6:15 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah that was my thought

that the official Cervelo response on their website seems to emphasize how it would have made more sense if Pauwels had done what he was told without question immediately … nice to shift the blame.

by guidemd on May 24, 2009 6:38 PM EDT up reply actions

essentially

If Pauwels did what he was told, then the team would have looked less stupid. Mind you, the decision still would have been just as stupid, it just might not have looked so bad.

You’re going to panic because Basso has 40 sec on a descent? Seriously? Maybe a little homework is in order by Mr’s Sastre and van Poppel.

To yank the stage away from Pauwels and then call him out for not disguising the bad choice is a bit disappointing to see.

Hopefully they’ll learn from it. If these guys are going to kill themselves for Carlos, he needs to be a little more careful.

The alternative explanation

is that things did NOT, or not exactly, go as described by Cervélo. It could be spin. Can’t imagine a rider taking almost the whole descent to (half-heartedly) start backing off, if he did indeed hear those instructions before the summit.

by tedvdw on May 24, 2009 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions

that's true

it’s not as if they would come out and say “We made a deal”. The end justifies the means? We’ll have to wait and see.

by jsallee00 on May 24, 2009 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions

and I'm not sure

How Pauwels spending 30 seconds with the team car on the descent fits with this scenario. How long does it take to say “Wait for Carlos!”

"I get paid to hurt other people. How good is that? How good is that?

by jsallee00 on May 24, 2009 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm voting spin

A rider called back to work for his captain does not generally throw a tantrum – and is generally not called back unless it’s really necessary. I also don’t buy that he got the call before the descent. Pauwels didn’t start backing off – and halfheartedly at that – until the descent. He’d have been back to the favorites group instantly if he’d sat up on the climb.

Also, Bertagnolli is a local boy. Nice coincidence, there.

A frozen 'cross ride from this last weekend. As you may be aware we have had siberian conditions here in the UK with a low of -14 degrees centigrade here on saturday morning. It was a beautiful sunny morning so i layered up and set off for a snowy 'cross ride along a roman road. I checked the thermometer when i got back to find it had been -10 throughout the ride! I had a lot of fun though and the views were spectacular.
