Tour de Romandie Stage 5 Race Report

The three B's:  Beer, Big climbs, and Belgiums.

Another fun day watching the Tour de Romandie

Star-divide

My plan:  From Aubonne cycle up to Col du Marchairuz (the route the pros would descend), then descend the other side, and cycle the same climb as the pros.

Then watch from the top.

After cycling the route, it was hard to see how any break could stay away.  As my 1st climb (their descent) was long (almost 1000 metre ascent), on a wide, perfectly surfaced road - in other words fast - at least when going down.

Whereas their climb, while occasionally quite steep, just wasn't very long (and again this was never a category one climb).

Another fantastic publicity caravan before the riders arrived.  Lots of hats (a great Gruyère cap), bottled water, a big PMU hand (I gave this to a very excited child), and various other knickknacks.

And again, Vin de Morges stopped and poured me a glass of wine.    Woohoo.

Then the strangest gift:  Athleticum (a sporting good store) handed out a little toothbrush/paste travel kit. Umm, thanks.

Much better weather today, meant bigger crowds and more cyclists.

The Swiss come equiped with traditional noisemakers:

They should go back to the old fashioned, proper broom waggon

all the quitters and their bikes to be unloaded at the end of the stage and then handed over to their teams.

Great report Will!

Thanks for sharing your fun with us this week!!!

I love C, not because he rocks as a cyclist, but because deep down he's a band geek! LOL!

Chapeau for Rabo if you see the suffering in the back..

Too bad you didn’t get a picture of Cavendish himself… Strange he can’t handle those hills. Loved to see his face in the besenwagen
