Misc. Giro Roster news - McEwen out, Astana's last race?
Robbie just tweeted an hour or so ago that he will not be riding the Giro - more at his website.
And, there's apparently an article at a Kazahk site (google translation here) which claims that Astana's financial difficulties continue and that if they finish the Giro it might be the team's last race. (found via DPF). That adds some intrigue to the whole question of "who will Astana's leader be at the Tour?" - guess the question shifts to "will Contador and Armstrong be able to ride the Tour at all?".

"will Contador be able to ride the Tour?"
umm, I have a feeling many teams are willing to fire half their riders to get him, oh an CdE will soon have an opening most likely, and I’ve said all along that’s his next stop. Maybe we will be able to see Bert on a pinarello this year. But, I am very skeptical about a story who’s only source so far has been a Kazakh site, even if Astana come from there.
Oh and it seems Girbecco has won again, that bastard goat scaring away all the sprinters!

Thank goodness for the black shorts I take it... funny story below
When I was racing in the 3’s, there was this dude that would always show up in these threadbear white bibshorts. Even though several of us threw jabs his way (even counting the pimples on his ass out loud ) the guy never stopped wearing them. Several years later I hear the guy is still wallowing in the 3’s and wearing those damn shorts.

by adammoney on May 3, 2009 5:24 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
huge for the sport?
why? Because they’d sell more treks and “nike cycling apparel”? Not to speak for him, but I read Will’s comment differently: someone comes in because Armstrong’s there, turns the team into an Armstrong ad campaign, then disappears…I don’t see how that helps the sport.

+1, that's how i read it as well
and I’d agree with that, if they are only there to promote their big guy and then ditch, that wouldn’t be a step forward for cycling. Lance is a very short term solution to the struggles of cycling, what cycling needs is committed sponsors who want to help the sport grow.

what Phil said, but
I don’t know that it would hurt the sport either, but it is a far cry from being “huge for the sport”. I think adam was thinking that Nike or whoever would stick around, crazy as Will’s fearful speculation was, I think adam just missed the part about it being a 6 month gig.
by sminer on May 3, 2009 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think it would hurt eventually
because if they just leave cold turkey, then suddenly you have a lot of riders and staff without a job, you’d have one less big team in the peloton, and the top riders of that team would take some spots from other riders on the other big teams. The hope I would have is that they see the profit in the sport, keep LA around to work for them in some form of management, to keep his fans interested, and stay around even after he leaves. But I see that as a long shot.

Well this is a Giro news thread, so I'll add a few things
three Giro participants won today in a final test before the big one. Tommy Voeckler took the Trophée des Grimpeurs, and Petacchi won the Giro Toscana. Also, Levi closed out the Gilla win finishing third in the final stage, LA finished 2nd on the stage and GC. Phil Zajicek surprised the two big guns and took the stage win today.

I read on cyclingnews
that he is focused on the Giro but more so on the Tour. He will not go for a top 20 GC placing at the Giro but he sayed he won’t just go for training, and will look at the stages and see which one’s suit him. I predict 8 breakaway’s for him :)

I’m thinking we don’t know all that’s happening here. I say that because as this story/rumor was breaking, the Astana DS was hanging out in New Mexico. Lance plans new team?
Interesting situation about Astana! Is it coincidence that on rad-net.de is an article about Lance planning an own team?
http://www.rad-net.de/index.php?newsid=17326
For those who don’t speak German, in short: Lance has plans for own team. “A team in which I would be owner, teamchef and rider – I would like that”, he said to la Gazetta dello Sport. The probability this could become real is pretty high, he claims. He adds that it would be difficult to find new sponsors, given the currect economic situation and the many dope-scandals of recent years.
Mind that Lance is simply quoted with a one-liner. It is not clear to me, or in the article, in which context he said that.

And another sprinter bites the dust
Rabo will go to the Giro without Brown. He has had three chances in the Giro and failed to leave a good impression.

Additional info
It was already decided last winter that Brown would not ride in the Giro. Rabo thought about taking Leezer for a while but thought it would be asking too much of that young talent. The Rabo team will fully support Menchov whom they see as one of the big favorites for this edition of the giro. The DS names Basso, Leipheimer and Menchov as podium kandidates. In alphabetical order. Menchov knows winning the tour will be difficult this year so has focused more on the giro than last year.

Brown
He hasn’t been hugely successful at the Giro for Rabo., and this course isn’t great for sprinters. There are a few stages that are made for them, but otherwise, heh, there’s a shit ton of climbing. Brown would probably struggle quite a bit in the first week’s climbing, and maybe not make much in the results at all.
Very intriguing that Menchov is setting this Giro as an important objective, not just training. Talented dude right there.

well it’s not a super squad but they will be active in going for stages. They kind of owe the Giro something as the only reason they got invited was cause of Zeke, and now he can’t ride, so they better be active.
Cesar Veloso won the Volta Catalyuna last year and David Garcia won the 15th stage in the Vuelta last year and is on some good form after winning a stage in Turkey and the Vuelta a la Rioja at the end of April. So there are some quality riders on the team.

I know but they weren't invited to the Giro either
and still weasled their way in. I was thinking they might have hopes to do the same in the Tour. They still have ProTour status, whatever good that does them in races on the Historical Calender.
by Jens on May 4, 2009 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Nope
It was all very confusing. But TAS upheld the right of the ASO to exclude the team, but struck down the right of the RCS to do the same. Had to do with the justification each org used to deny the invite. ASO claimed “damage to the image of the race,” while RCS claimed simply “prerogative.” Choose your words carefully, kids ;-)
So I doubt very Fuji makes the Tour start. I can’t remember why Cobo isn’t riding – I feel like I knew this. Maybe it was a former life.

He is cute, though.
If he fails to produce and you can’t think of anything else to do with him, perhaps a buyout is in order.
You need to do this race two or three times before you can win, despite what Cunego showed us last year: winning in his first try--Frank Schleck, on Amstel Gold

lol, yes, he's super cute.
But I think I’ll keep him in my team thanks….unless you can fork out a serious load of transfer money ;-) Has Dekker officially been moved to your ‘other division’ now?

Not yet.
I took your advice and have him on suspension until after Catalunya. If he doesn’t score there, he is most definitely going down.

Since this is the misc. Giro thready
Can someone help me out with a stupid question?
The year of the Giro in which Coppi went on his monster break to Pinerolo and crushed Bartali, what year was that? The race orgs simply say it was the 32nd Giro, which is really not as helpful as the actual year.
I know someone here knows this. Me, I suck at years. Several history degrees. Still suck at years. Sigh.

Hey Gav, do you know when your previews for stages 10-21 will be up on steephill?
I thoroughly enjoyed reading the first 9.

Well, I remember the story
and generally, I remember stories from all sorts of races. But I have trouble remembering the years for anything.
No offense to il Campionissimo, I promise.

This is why I suck in the winter trivia quizzes too
but that’s ok because CCB-VW has promised zero "what year " questions next winter. Right CCB?

They don't teach years in history degrees. Just big woolly ideas.
I never could remember when Henry VIII died….

Acqua e Sapone still have Luca Paolini on their roster
at least according to cyclingstartlists. Which is interesting because he has an appointment with CONI tomorrow, and rather oddly no-one seems to know what it’s all about. The hearing was originally scheduled for last week but it was delayed because Paolini’s lawyer was otherwise engaged.
And some odd things are happening re Simeoni. Last week one of the Italian regional cycling federations threatened to withdraw from the national federation if he didn’t get an invite, and today he has apparently gone to Italian cycling HQ to hand back his national champion’s jersey in protest.

Oil for Drugs
Paolini, I mean. At least, that’s how I saw it reported. He was also mixed up in Operation Athena, they raided his house.
Well, we’ll see tomorrow, anyway.

Just checked the weather for Venice
looks like there is a good chance of rain on Saturday, so the TTT could get very dangerous, luckily there are only 4 turns.

It says
sunny intervals on the BBC….with a bit of luck they might be ok, though long range forecasts are usually a liability. I know this from my days of going to cricket matches, where rain means no match…

Weening out
Troubles with his buttitude. Tjallingii replaces him. Big loss for the team in the mountains.

More roster tinkering: Cervelo
Hayden Roulston out with ankle problems; Daniel Lloyd in.
