Thanks to everyone at PdC for making it so much fun to follow along.
Menchov might have won...
but hats off to DiLuca for not once even thinking about giving up and making Menchov work for it!
Good race all together!

Great victory considering his age
- although it is just Nikola Aistrup he beats in what seems as a big sprint. Now, I write that as a Dane.
Still, there can be no doubt of Phinney’s talent. Looking at him, he doesn’t look at all like a 18-19 year old. Some riders owns the U23’s and goes on to be only decent pros. Still, some enormous potential he’s showing.

Yeah, even Thomas Lövkvist and Jurgen Van Goolen.
Looking the other way around, look at Fränk Schleck and Alessandro Ballan.

No. Google translate plus a few Spanish/Basque mates are useful things.
But most of the match reports I write from watching the matches on etb so I don’t need to understand the language.

We need a French DiLuca
With the talent to contend and the “De l’audace, encore de l’audace, et toujours de l’audace” attitude. But let us rejoice that we have him to make races.
I hope this dramatic Giro presentation will help add to the race prestige.....
Because competition between the Tour and Giro will be great for the spectators…so long as some riders union is consulted on course safety.

Sorry to announce Girbecco was hit by some pink dressed cyclist.
Left part of his horn in the guys leg …
Watching this Giro TT to finish the race, on the cobbles
makes me crave for a final stage TT in the Tour that finishes with a circuit around the Champs.
Oooooh , the excitement
“Can Sastre gain nine and a half minutes on Contador on this 25km TT? This race is going down to the wire folks……….”
Sounds to me like a lot of excitement over crashing, or the potential
Let’s add more potential for crashing to the sport to increase it’s popularity?
Nah only crashing when the Giro is on the line
Michael Rasmussen crashing several times in one TT in the TdF was boring cause everyone knew it didn’t matter anyway cause he sucked even without crashing. Here it mattered and would have been a travesty of justice – the best kind of thing to get the blood up. So you have to pick your spots to enhance crashes.
Wow, what a way to finish the Giro
Puncture on Menchov’s leg must hurt if he wasn’t so pumped on adrenalin.
Pleased for him, but you gotta feel for Di Luca. He threw everything but the kitchen sink at trying to get that jersey in the past week.
Also, Raisport let me watch it all for 20 stages no problems and on the last stage boot it off piu in favour of football and then move it so i can’t get any feed, typical! :P
"The main thing is to not cut yourself and bleed to death in the tub." Frankie Andreu when asked about shaving legs.
Someone must have complained to RAI to force them to geo-restrict the streams
was it universalsports?
Wow, what a Giro...
From stage 1 to stage 21… Best Grand Tour I’ve seen so far! Just the last Cavendish winning stage wasn’t as exciting.
Menchov was awesome
Definitely the strongest.
ps. Emma Pooley won the Montreal WC in a 110km solo breakaway. Coppi would approve
yeah I saw that news too
if that circuit’s the same as it used to be I think they go 11 times up the Mont-Royal, not a super-tough climb in and of itself (2km) but it is when you go up that many times, damn, props to Pooley, she must be super-strong right now. I read that she was alone for literally 90% of the ride, incredible stuff.

The fall, the mechanic
Erik Breukink recalls:
My heart stopped. It’s not often that I get such a scare during a race. Fortunately we all remained calm. I saw him fall, yelled “Bike” and Vincent Hendriks was already outside while we were still driving. A golden move from that guy. Yes, he does deserve a small bonus.
From http://www.rabosport.nl/?pagina=actueel&itemId=1402
I caught the French feed on Eurosport,
those guys were talking him up a ton, about how he was very smart to insist on the replacement bike when Menchov wanted the old one, talked about his “sang-froid.” Well done Mr. Hendriks (also name of my grade 9 physics teacher, South African dude ;)
by plinytheelder on Jun 1, 2009 12:13 AM EDT up reply actions
I never thought I'd warm so much to Menchov, especially as I'd been rooting for Di Luca all through.
But the man was awesome. As a mere mortal I can’t even begin to imagine the mental strain, quite apart from the physical strain, of defending a jersey like that for days on end in the last week of a three week tour. And he has emotions!
Adrenalina Italiana!
What a sport!
I just got done watching, and rewatching the last few seconds of Menchov’s ride today on Youtube. It gave me chills. Menchov clawing after his bike, the mechanic’s quickness and effort, and Menchov’s primal yell at the end. Every sport (except maybe tennis, yer welcome Chris…) has it’s defining moments and for cycling, this was one of them.
Damn what fun!!!!!! Let’s do it again?
hurrah for Menchov!!
i thought of him plugging away as i rode up a mountain today. seems i missed quite a finish but not the inspiration – i was first to the top!
Great Giro and great format but.....
I really hope they go back to the brutal dolomite stages late in the 3rd week. I hope they keep some of the new things they had this year(hilly stages like 14.15…circuit race, long hilly TT, early easier mountain stages) and then have the beasts of Italy to decide it all late. And hopefully they keep the final stage TT around for a while.
yeah I have to agree,
I thoroughly enjoyed watching, but really missed the high mountains – kind of what makes the Giro the Giro for me.
Also I have to admit, I do wish Menchov had a bit more panache. Well-deserved win for him, just not a style I really love.
by plinytheelder on Jun 1, 2009 12:16 AM EDT up reply actions
Yes, more high mountains would have made it for me. It was the only slight disappointment about the whole thing for me.
