Giro Sprint Jersey Wiki-thread
I know this is the year of the not sprinters sprinters jersey. Or is it? I was seeing Allan Davis on my VDS line up and realizing that he may be my only hope for points in this glorious race. That got me thinking about the ciclamina (sp?) jersey, and who is in contension this year.
Unfortunately I'm too lazy to work up a whole preview, so I though we could try this wiki style. I'll get started
Allan Davis (QS - Aus):
Last seen: DNFing at Flèche Wallonne.
Results of note this year: 4th Milan-Sanremo; GC, Points, stage win(x3), stage 2nd (x2)
Why he stands a chance: He appears to be a team leader of sorts on QS for the Giro. And he can get over climbs better than 8-puffs-less-Ale-Jet.
Why he probably won't: At some point you need to come home in front of Cavendish.
Alright, I feel much better about my chances now. So now it's your turn. Prove me wrong...who is going to steal Davis' thunder? From a quick look at the start list I see the following list of sprinters/ciclamina hopefuls:
Robbie Hunder
Tyler Farrar
Giovanni Visconti & Oscar Gatto
Alessandro Petacchi
Philippe Gilbert
Mark Cavendish
Ben Swift
Robert Forster
JJ Haedo
Now it's your turn. Fill in some details for your favourite sprinter and I'll update it above.

i have Allan Davis
in my VDS and one of the reasons that i pick up was because he will do the Giro. I don’t think know if he already prepared, i have some doubts. But if he ok, then he maybe caught one stage and some podium stage. Should be great.

Petacchi I guess
He would like to have it. He has made it over the big climbs before. He will be motivated. Somebody like DiLuca would be a thought, but he is on Alejet’s team so I think would defer. I don’t think he’ll be able to hold back in the hilly stages anyway.
Cav I don’t think will last to finish. Gilbert, hmm… that would be a goal! Hunter, are they invited to the Tour? If not look for him.
I hope some of the young guys show and challenge. Farrar, and some of the younger Italians.

One fan's ranking
1. Petacchi: motivated and on fire these days.
2. Farrar: also out to prove something.
3. Cavendish: world’s fastest human isn’t on his game lately, but he’ll be heard from.
CQRanking.com, you complete me.

I have Davis as well
but somehow I don’t see a sprinter winning ciclamino this year.
Bennati won last year, but in 2007 was Di Luca, Bettini also won before.
IMO Di Luca/Garzelli/Cunego have a better chance.

Seems like
Bettini specifically targeted the green that year and mixed it up with the sprinters. Can’t remembe about Di Luca. If he won it, the point system may be out of whack.

Points = purple (ciclamino)
but I’m sure you knew

It's a tough call
and I wouldn’t be surprised if the top two never go head to head in a sprint. I’ll take Cunego over Petacchi.
