Giro Stage One; Mark Cavendish Interview

Ciao from the Giro!

I'll post a full report later tonight or tomorrow, but I couldn't wait to share this.  My first video interview!  When I went into the press tent to watch the last few teams finish on the tv, Mark Cavendish was there, watching the race with Erik Zabel.  After a while I worked up the courage to ask if he had time for a few questions, and as soon as he said yes, I realized I hadn't thought of any questions!  Anyway, he was very nice, despite my obvious lack of interview skills.  The last few seconds of the video shows the reaction of Cavendish and Zabel as Astana crossed the line, and they realized Columbia had won the stage.

What a coup!

Well done. He really does seem like a nice guy.

Oh, Tommeke.

And on top of all that, Zabel -> What a Mentor

Seriously, has Cavendish lucked out and landed the best possible Mentor in the world?

And to top it off, there appears to be genuine affection between Zabel and Cavendish too.

I know that it is early days, but the ceiling for Cavendish must be looking very, very high about now…

yeah agreed

not to mention that Zabel seems pretty nosy here, leaning in and trying to hear the questions! I don’t mean that in a bad way, if anything it shows how seriously he takes his mentoring.

di Stefano better watch out

thanks, lyne!

actually, a piece of advice you gave me last year really helped. You told me to have a couple of questions ready, so I had thought of questions for some of the top English-speaking riders, just in case. That’s how I had the question about whether Cavendish would be riding the tt on his birthday, or heading home before then. The problem was, I figured the only way I’d get to talk to a big star like Cavendish was at a press conference, so I only had one question ready for him. Oh well, at least I had one :-)

you did great and it does easier.

And it always helps to get riders that like to talk like Cavendish.

glad I could help – remember, you know a lot about cycling, these guys are just normal guys and all the questions will come to you. of course, not that i still don’t get nervous but that’s another story. (shut up steph)

That was great!

It did show a warm side to him…he might be growing on me too.

Well done on your first video interview. They say the first is always special. . . . and in this case it really was. :)

How great! Nicely done...

If you interview him next time.. Will you ask why he came arround first?! Was it intentional.. Love to know that!

actually, I overheard him telling someone about that

He said it wasn’t intentional, but that when they were all driving for the line, his finishing kick just naturally gave him a gap.

Oooo well done you! Very nice.

He really does glow when he smiles doesn’t he?

Uh oh

Are we turning into a real media outlet? I don’t want to have to look up any journalistic standards…

Well done Tifosa!

Well done, and how exciting…

What are the odds

that you sat up late in your hotel room last night preparing emergency questions for next time? If you catch him again we want to know where he’s going to take the smack talk now. All this delivering must be putting pressure on him to step up a bit more.

Thanks, everyone!

I was so nervous! I could feel my hand shaking as I held the camera, so I expected the video to have more of a Blair Witch Project vibe. I guess that “steadyshot” feature on the camera really does work :-)

Absolutely Great

I’m well impressed by you and with Cav. Thanks

by Sabino on May 10, 2009 5:05 AM EDT reply actions

oh and what do you use for your video editing?

If you have time, put your name/logo/anything on it because if not, people will claim it for their own on the web.

most video editing have an easy way to add a title.

by lyne on May 10, 2009 6:49 AM EDT reply actions

I thought I caught a look on Cav's face once or twice like...

“Who is this chick and who’s she with?” Very cool interview, glad to see that people are warming up to Cav, he’s an awesome competitive althlete that doesn’t deserve to be called arrogant.

Probaby good it didn't go longer, as he was sweating a bit looking at the TV

Trying not to be rude glancing over, but unable to quite look away. Understandable, that…

lovely interview!

You did way better than I would have done! Great job. :D

Today, I raced à la Chavanel, and I succeeded.
