TT: National Champs Repository
I just read over on Cycling News that Marco Pinotti has won his fourth Italian Time Trial Championship and figure maybe we can we use this post to keep track of all of the National Championship results going on before the Tour.
Darn. That is only 42 words...now, I gotta use some filler material...let's see, man it is hot here in southeast Virginia today, but it's okay because it's a wet heat.
UPDATE - I'll try to keep a running list up here. Also, check out this cool table layout of country's champions from Wikipedia.

not a national championship...
But Ph. Gilbert just won the queen stage of the Ster Elektrotoer, hilly stage with many of the same climbs as LBL including La Redoute. He attacked a breakaway group on the last hill with 1km to go. Man, never bet against that guy when there’s an uphill finish…
yeah
I was thinking about Gilbert, if he was a basketball player I guess you’d call him a tweener. Fantastic one-day rider, but there’s not a single monument that’s quite right for him – LBL and Lombardia are too climby, Flanders not quite climby enough, too cobbly (?) and too flat at the end. Of the other races, he’s already said the end of F-W is too tough for him – too steep. I guess Amstel Gold is ideally the best chance for him to win, just too bad it’s not a monument.
Anyways who knows, maybe he’ll surprise everyone and win Flanders or MSR or something. Probably has a world championship in him too, if his team will work for him and if the course is right.

Gilbert has the potential to surprise us.
He’s like a throw back to the good ole days when a classics rider won LBL, MSR, Rhonde, Lombardia, etc. The only problem is he needs to get started soon.
yeah...
he could either win them all or come close in all of them! Love to see a versatile guy like that though, I can’t think of anyone else riding today who could conceivably win all 5 monuments – OK PR’s a stretch, still, can’t think of anyone who’d even have a shot.

Indeed that will be a good battle
both very well on form, T-Mart just beat Grabsch in Bayern but big Berta looked great in that long DL TT.
And I will wisely ignore the damn cow’s second sentence.
Is Martin German?
Hmm.. But Rabon in Chech, Lovkist maybe in Sweden, Sivtsov in Belarus, Rogers in Australia.. They all could win the tt.. No idea if they are racing.. +2 RR would give 5..

I'm going to try and get up there this weekend too
if work will let me. Had originally cleared my schedule specifically for this. Then the chain I work in bought a competing chain and I got involontarily drafted into helping convert stores this week. It’s a conspiracy I tell you. If shareholders found out that a publicly traded company made major deals with the sole purpose of f***ing up my vacation, there would be a scandal.
I said it in the live Suisse thread (before this one was made..)
how pleased I am for Pinotti, he’s a class rider and a seemingly good guy, also thrilled for Bosisio getting second place. Perhaps he can take the road title instead? :D
Btw how classy and retro is the jersey Pinotti got? Love it!

No way, not likely to be any confusion:
A. It doesn’t have any logos, so should be clear it’s no pro jersey
B. Nobody expects the real Italian champ to be riding around SE England …
C. Slap me silly for assuming, but I can’t imagine the style and, more importantly, speed of a random tourist to be confusingly similar to an Italian champ ;)
Nah.
Nobody’s ever said to my face that I look like an arse wearing my Liquigas ciclamino jersey riding around southeast England. It’s fairly obvious I’m not Daniele Bennati ;-)

Tuft is the ITT nat champ
But he and Meier are last years champs. Canadian nationals are being held next weekend out in Beauce.
"Never swing a small stick. " Andy Hampsten
Meier will be there
but sounds like he’s not thrilled about a course change:
Change to nationals road course and not for the better, 4×45km last climb 20km from the finish line…hhhmmm..and presumably he’s pretty much on his own this year rather than having a bunch of Symmetrics teammates to help out.
he’s pretty much on his own this year
True, I doubt Ryder or Tuft will be there (horibble timing these nats)
And word of Rollin?
"Never swing a small stick. " Andy Hampsten
recovering from mononucleosis apparently (Rollin, that is)
read that at Pedal or somewhere like that last week, I’ll try to find the link again …
found the link about Rollin
here, with this quote:
I have been out of competition since Tour de Romandie fighting Mono. My health is improving as we speak, but still not strong enough to say when to expect a come back to racing. I’ll test myself first with local races prior to making the trip back to Europe. Hopefully I’ll get back on my feet soon enough to tend the last part of the season.
Man mono takes forever to get over completely
being a huge Federer fan I know it effects an athlete even when they can compete again, Rog was never at his best last year even though he had mono at the very beginning of the year(January), I can’t imagine Rollin being able to compete at his best until next year.
The good news part of this news
Is that now I may get to see him race in person.

Looks like it. Fairly straightforward finishing circuit.
But hey, a girl can dream, no? Actually though, Rapha Condor are very good at these crit style races and lots of breakaways have been sticking in the Tour Series events….the whole peloton will gang up against Cav too….massive longshot I know ;-)
Adrenalina Italiana!
They might gang up on him but if it gets to a sprint they still have to beat him
I don’t want him to win and I can’t imagine or want to what a British champ Columbia jersey would look like, it can’t be good.
Two have 4 natchamps already
Presumably it will just be the Union Flag with white letters like on the Danish jersey.

Extra motivation for Cav to win....chance to wear a sensible outfit for a year would certo make me go faster!

Presumably it will just be the Union Flag...
Nope, it has to be red, white & blue bands. The"rules":http://www.britishcycling.org.uk/web/site/BC/mtb/mtb_national_champions_jersey.asp are pretty strict, they don’t leave all that much room for ‘creativity’ (unfortunately/happily according to preference).
Oh that's right!
That’s all right, nice clean design. Though possibly slightly confusing with all the other red-white-blue flags out there. Notably,

oh yes and DAMN
this reminds me of the knitted Belgium Jersey that I looked at 5 times when at the Flanders Museaum, but never bought…..
Why didn’t I just by the damn thing… OK I’m going to ask a friend to go get it for me.. Don’t care that I wear VK gear at the moment, that jersey was sweeeet..

Teams
4 Cervelo & 3 Barloworld in there, as well as the domestic teams.
Not sure Cav will win tbh: I think the winner in recent years has almost always come from a break. He’s certainly the number one target, though since so many of the European-based riders are also coming back, it might be different this time. There’s also Kennaugh & people in there which is interesting.

So I’m rather fond of those Caribbean races.
"Where there’s a will, there’s a way.": Alberto Contador, shortly after waking up from brain surgery.
I wasn't that good. 1 DNF and a top-10 finish
Over there everybody with a bike could join right in. It was a pretty heavy course though. 120 km in tropical heat over lots of small but punchy climbs. Because the Netherlands Antilles are part of the Dutch Kingdom I was allowed to race for real. In 2008 I finished the race in top 10 and some other nationalities were removed from the official score. I guess I would be around 6th or 7th in that official list. It just occured to me that I am entitled to some CQ-points for that. Too bad they have not updated the 2008 results yet. I did notify them of the results so that may change.
I usually came in 10th – 15th in races. There was a group of riders that were more talented and/or had more time to train than me. But it was a lot of fun nevertheless. The treshold to start racing was very low. I love that about cycling on Curaçao. Not to mention the Amstel Race Curaçao were you get to ride with the pro’s.
In 2008 I did win the race prior to the NC. It was a pretty climby race and the good riders forgot to make it hard. In the end I joined a breakaway rider who, for some reason I don’t understand, was happy to drag me to the line. In a short uphill sprint I took 2 bikelengths on him.
But you have to keep things in perspective. Of all 1000 PdC members I guess I’d be beaten by at least a couple of hundred. Especially since I don’t ride a lot anymore.
"Where there’s a will, there’s a way.": Alberto Contador, shortly after waking up from brain surgery.
Top 10 in any national champs is impressive in my eyes!
What fabulous experiences!
Adrenalina Italiana!
They've updated it
I now am officially listen on CQ with some CQ points behind my name. Positively psyched about it. Too bad I don’t know people in real life who’d understand how cool that is!
"Where there’s a will, there’s a way.": Alberto Contador, shortly after waking up from brain surgery.
Totally!
My brief stint as a bike racer on Curaçao has now gotten me into the CyclingNews archives and the CQ ranking. Maximum possible result considering my lack of proper training and overall crappiness on the bike.
The Cyclingnews bit is actually open to you all. Just get a ticket for you and your bike to Curaçao in the first week of november and join the Amstel Race Curaçao.. It was so cool to race with Alberto Contador. Also a bit unreal. I was in a bunch that included the last TdF winner and a man in a huge red suit who must have weighed at least 120 kg. After the first climb the red guy was gone but still.
The NC bit is open to all PdC members carrying a Dutch passport. You’d need proper training and getting accustomed to the heat to get into the top-10 I guess.
"Where there’s a will, there’s a way.": Alberto Contador, shortly after waking up from brain surgery.
Sure, the more the merrier!
In the NC you’d be guaranteed a top-10 spot if you manage to finish. Normally there are 1-5 women participating in races. A former teammate of mine must have won dozens of races were she was the only female contestant.
"Where there’s a will, there’s a way.": Alberto Contador, shortly after waking up from brain surgery.

Don't be silly. It was a verb from the start.
“Frinking”: the present participle of the verb “to frink,” as in He finds himself frinking a lot these days. Could also be a gerund (verb turned into noun): Frinking isn’t as much fun as she hoped it would be, but in that case it would still have started life as a verb.

Which, as someone who has never for a second considered giving up his own name, strikes me as eminently sensible.

Anyone know if Cance is doing the Swiss nationals?
I’d imagine he is and I wouldn’t bet against him in the RR, the TT is a lock.
Not doing the chrono :-(
But might be doing the RR. I believe the general gist is: the chrono is on tomorrow, it’s too soon, the man’s stuffed and needs some rest.
He’d better win those bloody rainbows… then I might just see my way clear to forgiving him, LOL.
Hah, love it!
But perhaps his very presence says it all. Da Man don’t need no fancy jerseys to inspire fear and respect when he rolls up to the start house.
Tuft will be defending his Canadian TT title
(according to Garmin website) – which probably means he isn’t on the Tour team …
funny you should say that (from the dept. of otherwise useless info ;-) )
I had a moment last year where I was really frustrated with my Quicken financial program and the new mandated date format for cheques in Canada, so I was trying to look up what the “official” date format was supposed to be. Apparently, most of the world uses dd-mm-yy(yy) except the USA where mm-dd-yy(yy) is standard, and a few countries where yy(yy)-mm-dd is the standard. And, Canadians are the most confused of all, because all 3 formats are in usage here! (my preference is yyyy-mm-dd FWIW, which is generally what our government uses, except that it’s not what’s on our cheques or in my Quicken program which seem to conform to “international” usage, and then we get stuff with an American influence as well).
Do any of these nats appear on web streams do we know?
I have no recollection of watching any of them last year…

That's quite a surprise result, no?
Not that Ljungskog is especially known for her TT skilzz but Fahlin is still the up-and-comer. For example, the other two were selected for the World Champs TT last year.
Yes, and Emilia was surprised too
My bet was on Ljungskog or Johansson. But none of them are time trialists. Johansson won last year, but without much of a competition. Ljungskog wasn’t there, and Dorothea Isaksson who came second is a duathlete.

Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Luxembourg, Slovakia, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Portugal, France. He won the silver medal in Beijing....in mountain biking
now I know it isn’t rare for MTB’s to do well on the road but it’s pretty rare they do well in TTing so early in their RR career.
not entirely unheard of though...
Cadel Evans was 3rd in the Junior Worlds TT in 1995 as an aside to his MTB’ing at the time.
A lot of mountain bike racing is just like a TT...
just go as hard as you can but not blowing up so he is quite used to the effort. I’m sure if Julien Absalon showed up, albeit with a little practice to get used to the position, he could have gotten at least a top 5. Plus Peraud has raced a good bit of road in his career and in the defending Amateur champ in the Road Race too…It is suprising…but nothing shocking.

from Dominique Perras here, regarding the TT:

Veikkanen is not participating, too bad (don’t know why yet). I will lose my nice jersey Sunday, since Carlstöm is not allowed to win even if he has the legs, Liquigas said our Champ kit doesn’t fit with theirs(that is true), silly those Italians, so picky.

yup, strange. Kellu rode -05
in the Finnish Champ Jersey with Liquigas, apparently it was not good and they ordered him not to win after that.
He has finished 2nd since.
So, looks like no Finnish kit in the peloton since our big pros are only Jussi and Kellu.
That is so bizarre
It’s really, honestly true? Why even let him ride while telling him not to win? Technically, if he’s throwing the races deliberately, seems like they’re ordering him to commit sporting fraud.
I can't understand why people cheat--Mark Cavendish
it is bizarre and honestly true, Kjell himself confirmed it.
I really doubt he was lying about it.
Last year he helped Jussi to win, yet he (Kjell) looked much stronger, but was ordered not to get the jersey, since Liquigas felt our jersey really looked bad in their kits (true)
Sporting fraud? If your team says they don’t want you to wear a different jersey, how is that a sporting fraud?
I hope Kellu is allowed to race Sunday and take the jersey if he has the legs, but I doubt it.
Deliberately throwing a competition you could win?
