new drug tests (shhh, it's a secret)
This is kind of hilarious:
"AFLD announced Monday that it was going to use a new test during the Tour that will be able to detect a hitherto undetectable substance. AFLD president Pierre Bordry did not wish to give the name of this product and furthermore declared that the test was not yet completely ready. He nonetheless specified that, like last year, the UCI has authorized the AFLD to conserve the blood samples taken from riders for future tests."
Wow, this is cold war language!

Cold War Language...
…and also very likely extreme bullshit, except for the last clause of the last sentence. This is pure smokescreen if ever I did see it.

I really miss the good old cold war days ;)

After CERA, a smokescreen might be effective.

oh, I'm not questioning the possible effectiveness of this...
…just highly skeptical about the substance of it.

well, I'm sure there are a lot of tests invented in 2009 for something-or-other
I’ve read it twice, and nowhere does it say that it’s a test for a doping agent believed to be in use in the peloton [grin].

Smokescreen possibly but there are welcome developments
Insulin and HGH exist already (developed in Cologne), but seems not yet catching many. The HgH test is apparently very expensive – but surely the TdF can afford it.
Longer term on HGH there seems to be hope
GW1516 – would be my bet.

Hmmm.
This article seems to be an extrapolation from a question Bordry was asked & an answer he gave, rather than an ‘announcement’, per se, since this article has a (translated) quote from him. Haven’t found the French yet though… If he’s asked if this is a possibility, he’s not going to say no, is he?

The emperor wears no clothes!
The blood doping results (Tyler Hamilton plus three), the biological passport results (five so far), the possible missed CERA positives from the 08 TdF and so on, all lead to my belief that these test are from far from infallible in detecting cheats.
Now rises the specter of a mystery PED and the supposed test to detect it.
Hmmmmmmmm.

More deets
There is more info at Le Monde.
The samples will be tested for a previously undetectable substance and a method. Gav speculates that the method must be autologous blood doping. Not sure what substances are left to detect, as they already announced that they were testing for HGH during the Tour.
The tests may not be quite ready in time for the Tour, in which case, the samples will be preserved until they can be tested. The UCI has agreed to this plan.
The AFLD has also spoken at length with Kohl and apparently learned a few things. No deets there.

The last sentence is by far the one I'm most curious about...
…but all interesting.

Robbie McEwen weighs in
i’m sure the “secret” new drug test at the tour will be for growth hormone. UCI are doing specific tests out of comp.

In Le Monde article
look at the graphic behind Bordry. I could only climb that hill if I were taking whatever it is they’re going to test for…

Boonen update
didn’t want to make a whole new thread for this, but it appears that there has been some intrigue in the Boonen case. He claims that ASO told him at first that he could ride, and then later said no. His lawyers claim that the reason for this was the personal intervention of Bernard Laporte, the French Minister for Sport – apparently he ordered the ASO to reverse its decision.
Interestingly, Laporte left his post yesterday – there was a cabinet reshuffle, don’t know if he resigned or got the axe. He’s very well known in France as he’s the former national rugby team coach. Anyways, I’d say his departure has to be seen as good news for Boonen’s chances to ride the Tour.
