Tour Rosters: Cervelo

While I am unaware of this being officially confirmed on any sites it appears the roster will include the following:

  • Carslos Sastre
  • Inigo Cuesta
  • Voldoymir Gustov
  • Heinrich Haussler
  • Thor Hushovd
  • Andreas Klier
  • Brett Lancaster
  • Jose Angel Gomez Marchante
  • Hayden Roulston

It would seem to me the biggest ommission from this list is Simon Gerrans given his winning a stage at the Tour last year and winning a stage of the Giro in May.

Any thoughts?

I was just about to put this up

Agree about Gerrans. He’d been training in Colorado with Lance, Levi & Horner. I’m pretty surprised he’s not on the roster.

This also looks like a stage hunting roster. Thor, GHH, Klier, Lancaster and Roulston aren’t going to do much to help Sastre out in the mountains.

As to why I wasn’t selected. Not to sure. I guess I’m not the pure climber or lead-out man that CTT want to use to support Carlos and Thor.

I think it's mighty odd and he has every right to be miffed.

Not a pure climber maybe, but no slouch. I mean, he won a stage in the mountains last year, and he’s going super strongly. I’d have thought him a very valuable asset.

Odd

but Cervelo are new, they may have a variety of reasons to pick guys for the Tour. GHH and Klier, for example, might be receiving their reward for a fabulous spring. Alternatively, they’re Thor’s helpers in a real maillot vert push.

Thor selected Lancaster as his lead out man following P-R back in April

So I am still not sure how HH fits into this mix. I really don’t see them sending two guys at a sprint but who knows.

by ncmussell on Jun 24, 2009 1:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Why not? There are a lot of teams who do that

I also think HH is addicted

to the limelight. This guy has had some big cycling headlining success, and I think he wants more. And he will turn himself inside out to get some more for himself or his teammates.

by sminer on Jun 24, 2009 6:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Cervelo doesn't need that many leadout men, they have two top sprinters

one of them leading out the other is deadly enough. They need more support for Sastre and although they have a solid team fo help, Gerrans would have helped even more. Plus, he won a stage at the Tour last year, if they are looking for stages having Gerrans on the team will only make it more likely for them to get one. Also, my VDS team gives a big middle finger to Cervelo’s DS’s.

by Phil H. on Jun 24, 2009 1:41 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed.

Apparently winning a stage in 2 of the last 3 GT’s isn’t enough to get an invite back. OTOH, they did reward Sergei Pauwels for his “teamwork” in the Giro by also leaving him at home.

They must have seen Gerrans’ recent VDS stats and decided to put a stop to all that cheap goodness.

Pauwels

From what I read, he was never on the short-list for the tour. I figured this was a planned break. He has certainly ridden well enough to deserve a shot.

Yeah Gerrans should be a shoo-in.

Maybe they are asking him to lead their Vuelta team? Sastre’s gonna be more lonely then he was at the Vuelta last year. After such a good spring and Giro, this team looks…weird.

by ursula on Jun 24, 2009 1:56 PM EDT reply actions

Gerrans should never lead a Grand Tour team if he is just looking for a stage or 2...

Marchante has done super in previous Vuelta’s so he is a fine leader. Gerrans should be at the Tour but shit happens.

He's done well at the Vuelta though

he didn’t get a chance to do much last year seeing he was stuck on Ricco’s team. This year he suffered a crash pretty early in the year but just placed 5th at Catalyuna.

by Phil H. on Jun 24, 2009 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions

It doesn't seem like Cervelo have given him any assurances about leadership elsewhere.

if this were the case, he himself might have understood the decision better, which he clearly doesn’t. Really, they should have let him know why as it’s pretty obvious he was going to be upset.

It is on par with Saxo Bank dissing Breschel?

Riis will be regretful if Breschels gets one of the Danish jersey….

But to dis someone who has won two Tour stages is like Columbia leaving Cavendish at home.

by Josenka on Jun 24, 2009 2:10 PM EDT reply actions

Nah, Riis knows that he can gain more from having a strickt game-plan instead of stage hunting

And in the big picture a glorious Danish stage win(fat chance of that happening with Columbia in the Tour :p ) is worthless, there aren’t more sponsors to be found in Denmark.

by OctaBech on Jun 24, 2009 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Defo worse than leaving Breschel out.

Harsh on Breschel, but others fit better into their masterplan

I have fancied that Riis wants the Danes to dominate le Tour in his diabolical plan for (vicarious)peloton domination.

I can't imagine that Sastre is happy with this line-up

Not many climbers at all. And Cuesta is, what, 40? Beyond that we have Marchante… and… can Gustov climb?

I mean, is that it? It’s almost a team for Paris-Roubaix.

Amazing that Pauwels has been left out – he looked fantastic in the Giro. And obviously Gerrans is a weird one.

by Mark T1979 on Jun 24, 2009 3:47 PM EDT reply actions

Sastre brought Cuesta to Cervelo with him

from VeloNews last January:

Cuesta – who turns 40 in June – is still going strong as the right-hand man of Tour de France winner Carlos Sastre. When Sastre committed to Cervélo, he made sure there was a place for the hard-working Cuesta on the start-up team.

by majope on Jun 24, 2009 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Even so

This is a very limited team, climbing-wise.

by Mark T1979 on Jun 24, 2009 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, Carlos won't be too happy that he had a stronger team at the Giro than at the Tour

he can blame Thor and GHH for that, although the DS’s didn’t have to select all those lead-out guys and make the two sprinters do it themselves.

by Phil H. on Jun 24, 2009 4:07 PM EDT up reply actions

although

do you really think they’d put together a tour lineup without talking to Carlos about it? It certainly is an odd looking roster, but given how important Sastre is to the team, it seems inconceivable that he would have no input as to the team makeup.

maybe just looking to podium

Maybe they realized they don’t have the resources to devote to winning the Tour, so they are putting together the best chance to both podium on GC and go for stage victories and sprints. I could see HH potentially contesting the green jersey.

by ncmussell on Jun 24, 2009 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions

It seems to me they asked Carlos for 1-2 guy's he really wants and then Thor the same

plus GHH is a lock seeing he is the freaking MVP for them this year. So you end with a bunch of lead-out guys who will lend no assistance to Carlos and then a few helpers. Then you have guys like Gerrans and Pauwels on the sideline. If Carlos picked all these guys and snubbed Gerrans then I will question just how intelligent he really is.

by Phil H. on Jun 24, 2009 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions

He wanted Cuesta on the Tour team last year too but Riis/Andersen said no

and look at the bunch of losers he ended up with last year instead.

This is ridiculous

you would think they would throw as much as support at Sastre as possible. Gerrans being left off is an embarrassing mgmt decision.

by Davide Don of Rio on Jun 24, 2009 3:59 PM EDT reply actions

This is a recipe for mediocrity

“We have a GC-guy and a sprinter. Let’s divvy upt the team and let them have 3 support guys each”

Good chance they won’t be overly successful in either department.

by Jens on Jun 24, 2009 4:18 PM EDT reply actions

I will say that this seems to be the underlying thrust of Gerrans' tweet.

A not so subtle dig at the composition of the tour team as a whole, rather than just his omission from it.

Hmm

very interesting thought. I was wondering what in the world he was doing in the states training.

by cyclingdiva on Jun 25, 2009 10:11 AM EDT up reply actions

How is Thor and HH going to work?

I am still puzzled by this. Not by the fact that you can have more than one sprinter on a team (i.e. columbia with Cav and Greipel or Quick Step with Boonen and Davis) but I don’t know if there is a clear consensus on which of these two is the better sprinter. Is HH going to help lead out Thor? I don’t see Thor leading out HH. And someone correct me if I am wrong but generally you don’t see two guys from the same team challenging a single sprint for the win.

by ncmussell on Jun 24, 2009 4:25 PM EDT reply actions

HH will lead out Thor

I read/heard this somewhere. I’ll look for the link.

From the Cervelo Team Page
"The decision for the final Tour de France Team was certainly not an easy one," said Thomas Campana, Managing Director, Cervélo TestTeam. "Though we are fortunate to have many excellent riders who are in good shape and ready for the Tour, in the end only nine riders per team are allowed to start. The goal, for our first Tour de France, will be for a top result in the GC (General Classification) with defending champion Carlos Sastre. The team will provide Carlos with their full support to help him achieve this goal. Another major goal for us will be to help our sprint ace Thor Hushovd, win the green jersey. Thor won it in 2005 and we believe he can do itagain with this team. We are ready and the Team is looking forward to an exciting three weeks of racing."

Thor personally selected Lancaster

He mentioned this right after Paris Roubaix and said he was taking time off to work with him on the leadout.

by ncmussell on Jun 24, 2009 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions

The Cervelo DS's can suck it

they have given no chance to GHH to give it a go when Thor is in the race. The TdS was oh so promising for Thor, he only got thoroughly smoked against Cav. I guess getting 2nd in two monuments isn’t good enough…errr, my VDS team once again raises its middle fingers and points them at the Cervelo Ds’s.

I'm glad they didn't put Pauwels into this line-up b/c he would be no use for any races after the Tour

The Giro was his first Grand Tour and if he did the Tour then he would probably be toast for the rest of the year…If he does the Giro again next year and does as well as he did, then he will certainly be on the team. He will be at the Vuelta most likely….

This team has all the components of a normal team in the Tour…The have some guys to ride the front and start a lead out in Roulston and Klier, lead out man in Lancaster, lead sprinter in Hushovd, 2nd sprinter and breakaway rider in Haussler, Gustov (yes he can climb) as the all-around domestique, Cuesta and Marchante the lead climbers for the leader Sastre…looks fine to me, they will probably take at least 2 stages

Hayden Roulston

what this guy did, or does, to deserve a selection?

by semprenaroda on Jun 24, 2009 7:15 PM EDT reply actions

Rolly

He’s a big fish from our little pond! [New Zealand] Silver medal in the Bejing Olympic Pursuit, recently got 7th in Ster Elektroter 5 day tour 17 seconds off Gilbert’s winning time. It will be interesting to see how he goes at the big show, He has always been highly regarded down here. Rumour had it on signing with Cervelo that they always had the Tour prologue in mind for him. Also he should be pretty handy in the TTT which will be important for Castre’s GC hopes. IMHO

every time I hear or read about Roulston...

I can’t help but wonder if his heart’s suddenly going to stop in one of these races – either he was misdiagnosed a few years ago with his heart condition, or he really did have a miracle occur with his Reiki treatment that “cured” him…
