I'm guessing you purposely left out France and Sweden...

because no one has those guys. Btw, rec’d the post and others should too so it can stay up front over the weekend.

Yes. If points fall in the forest and there is no one to hear them, they don't make a sound, VDS-wise.

Actually, I’m putting up the points for VDS-listed riders whether or not anyone has them. Nobody has Bodnar, for instance, but he was available and people should know what they’re missing.

If people want to check the rest of the champions, they’ll be in the National Champs Repository threads.

300 pts so far

with Bak, Boss Hog and Grivko. Personally I think 100pts per championship is a bit we’ll see how it goes I guess.

by Rothko on Jun 25, 2009 6:10 PM EDT reply actions

+1, especially for smaller countries.

100 seems reasonable for France, Italy, Spain, etc. But Lithuania?

by brunopitton on Jun 25, 2009 7:08 PM EDT up reply actions

well, it's a playing it safe approach, no?

I mean, you almost guarantee 100 points out of a rider by picking with an eye toward this, but you’ll probably not gain much else.

by Sui Juris on Jun 25, 2009 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions

"Almost" being the operative word.

Flat tire at the wrong moment, and you’ve blown a spot on your roster that could have gone to someone who has a lot more chances throughout the season.

by majope on Jun 25, 2009 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Right.

Almost was definitely an intended modifier there. But because I’m not nearly as smart as the rest of the PdC folks on VDS, I was left with not a lot of certainty in filling out my roster for the last 3-4 guys. Nat champs? Way to go, I think.

I agree 100 points is a bit much.....I 'second' the idea of 100 points for

France, Italy, Spain, etc….but Lithuania, is a push, Luxembourg….come on now. We could work out a system based on number of pro or ProTour riders on th start.

Bah....Cavendish?!

If someone really bothered spending the time back in February

to look up all these obscure champions then you can’t really begrudge them 100 points.

Up to 600pts now

with Taaramae x2 and A. Schleck. And Taaremae has now breached the 500pt mark for the year – well done young man.

Wow, Lars Bak

Is really paying off for me this year. Probably my best pick so far!

Okay, not a very big skyrocket, but you’ve got to cheer the little things.

So are we going to come up with a system to 'bell-curve' these VDS points or

is a race with three or four pros worth the same as one with a 100? No worries either way.

by bradBordeaux on Jun 29, 2009 3:52 AM EDT reply actions

maybe next year?

only a few of those victories worth 100 points methinks.
Italy, Spain, France, Belgium….

by rbjhan on Jun 29, 2009 5:08 AM EDT up reply actions

Chris had mentioned possibly tweaking it for next year.

I don’t think it would be fair to change it in the middle of the season (says the woman with the Luxembourg champ). Seems like a good topic to debate during the off season, along with why Spanish stage races should be dumped completely.

And national championships (says the woman with the Spanish TT, Belarussian, Danish, Italian TT and Norwegian TT champions).

That's why they're called BONUS points

You can keep it in mind when picking your team. The reward is big but the risk is too. It’s all or nothing.

by celerity on Jun 29, 2009 6:30 AM EDT reply actions

Something that I don't understand

- but then again there are so many things I don’t understand -

These riders are not on the VDS-list as far as I know, but they are getting points

RR France: Dmitri Champion, Bretagne-Schuller
RR Spain: Ruben Plaza Molina, Liberty Seguros
RR Kazakhstan: Dmitriy Fofonov, Elite-2
TT Kazakhstan: Andrey Mitzourov, Tabriz Petrochemical
TT Portugal: Tiago Jose Pinto Machado, Madeinox-Boavista

Then why are these riders not getting any points:

RR Netherlands: Koos Moerenhout, Rabobank
RR Russia: Serguei Ivanov, Katusha
RR Sweden: Marcus Ljungqvist, Saxo Bank
TT Belarus: Branislau Samoulau, Quickstep

And what about:
TT Australia: Michael Rogers, High Road

What are the criteria for getting bonus points?

by LittleOldLady on Jun 30, 2009 6:01 AM EDT reply actions

Australia have their championships in January

And the VDS competition starts in February/March. It may seem to be unfair to exclude the points for Rogers, but I think it can mess up the competition a bit if they are included.

Oh yes, I forgot that :-)

by LittleOldLady on Jun 30, 2009 6:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Riders who get points are on the VDS spreadsheet

That means they were available in the draft (on the “Final VDS riderlist”) whether or not they ended up on any teams.

Dmitri Champion—was available, is on 4 teams
Ruben Plaza Molina—was available, on 1 team
Dmitriy Fofonov—was available on list, but not picked by any teams
Andrey Mizourov—was available, on 1 team
Tiago Jose Pinto Machado—was available (pretty sure he was listed as Jose Pinto Machado), but not picked by any teams

Ivanov is on the list and got points.

Moerenhout, Ljungqvist, and Samoulau were not available this year, at least not that I can find. You can see who was and wasn’t available by checking the final version of the entry form in the VDS startup post here, or check out my ongoing VDS season spreadsheet here.

TheFigurehead is absolutely right about Rogers—both Australia and New Zealand have their championships before the VDS season starts.

Hope that helps.

A frozen 'cross ride from this last weekend. As you may be aware we have had siberian conditions here in the UK with a low of -14 degrees centigrade here on saturday morning. It was a beautiful sunny morning so i layered up and set off for a snowy 'cross ride along a roman road. I checked the thermometer when i got back to find it had been -10 throughout the ride! I had a lot of fun though and the views were spectacular.
