Versus TdF Preview Today 7pm EDT
Hi, folks. Just a quick reminder to all Vesus-watchers that their 1/2-hour Tour de France preview show is on today at 7pm EDT/6pm CDT.
VS started their cycling "coverage" today by showing five hours of LA's "greatest" stage wins in the TdF. 2001 stage 10 ("The Look," on l'Alpe d'Huez,) 2001 stage 13 (Ullrich crashes, LA waits,) and are now in their third hour (2002, Stage 12, the stage where Christoph Moreau punched Carlos Sastre in the face and the Chechu/Heras/LA train charges up and passes Laurent Jalabert on the Plateau de Beille.)
I haven't watched these Tours for a couple of years now, and it's amazing how many convicted dopers were right in there: Ullrich, Botero, Rumsas, Sevilla, Heras, Serrano, Didier Rous, Gonzalez de Galdeano, Frigo, Piepolli, Landis. I'm watching and mentally checking them off: doper, yup, doper, yup, doper, yup. I'm glad I was a more naive cycling fan back then, it's enough to break your heart...

Oh I don't want to touch you Frinkster
well I think I’m happy seeing Jan because I know he’s not coming back and don’t want him to now. Vino is coming back and so it’s a bit different.

I think it's almost safe to put Vaughters in the category of delusional.
Did he say that winning the Tour is their #1 goal? I don’t have tivo.

Well, maybe that Q&A took place when he thought they might get Contador.

Or before CVV got hurt
still would see it as quite a stretch but the DS is supposed to say stuff he really doesn’t believe to give his team leader confidence.

What's wrong with having that as your goal?
While it may not be realistic, I have no problem with him saying that is their #1 goal. I mean you have a guy that finished fourth in the Tour last year, so why not make it a goal to win the tour. Shouldn’t that be every director’s goal?

Or
put another way, as the team directeur, it’s not totally outlandish to think he has to say that. Some directeurs will come out and admit the obvious, that they aren’t going to win, but I can understand other DSs feeling like they shouldn’t say that. His real goal is to do as much as they can, and if setting the expectations high is what they need right now, OK I guess.

Not to take anything away from Garmin's GC hopeful,
but they’re going up against the same riders as last year, and some of them I think are better than last year. And then you add Astana back into the mix and you’re further out of the picture. I’m all for the power of positive thinking, but when you stack it up against the reality of this year’s situation I think your just left with delusional musings from an insane person. And on top of that, I don’t think those side burns work for him.

couldn't say for sure... as usual, vs background audio is too much in the foreground

They focused on the important parts.
Now I know Lance is riding.

My own prep for the tour may involve an HD Tivo
Anyone have a better suggestion than the $200 refurb from Tivo itself?

you're stuck with comcast right?

Can't you
just get the DVR from your cable dudes? I pay $6 a month for renting one. TiVo is probably better but this will do.

The DVRs from cablecos are horrible.
Horrible horrible.
I’m perfectly happy with the Tivo deal (esp. since the last time I looked they were $800), but I thought I’d check here in case anyone knew of better pricing/options.

How about a TV card in an old PC
(or one of those little USB plug in sticks) plus a big hard disk. You don’t need a fast computer if it’s just recording the stream and not trying to show the picture. I’ve got an old P3 700Mhz box that manages fine, and lets me tap into the recorded files as and when I want. On average an hour of TV takes up 2 Gig, so a Terabyte disk would come pretty close to letting you record one channel non-stop for the whole 21 days.

I've started down that road
and stopped. And started again. And then stopped. In the end, rolling my own solution just isn’t as fun as it used to be. I haven’t yet set up an easy PC to Big Screen network, so thought I’d just go for the lazy solution. For now, anyway.

Everyone I know that has the Tivo package is very happy.
Don’t think anyone has gone with any other option.
by sminer on Jun 29, 2009 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
to do that properly, you need two drives of the same size so that you have mirror backups
