Why me? Alberto Contador

Why he will win: Ugh, is it not obvious? He's the best stage racer in the world right now, he's on great form, and he has a strong, if not drama queen, team. But hey, do you want stats, should I give you stats? Ok, time for some stats.

Star-divide

It's pretty ovious Bert is a great climber, but now he is one of the world's best Time Trialist's. He won't beat Cance but he can beat his biggest rivals, including Evans, Menchov, and one Armstrong, Lance...hmm, never heard of him, must be a neo-pro or the token Kazakh for Astana. Anyway's my man Bert has kicked ass in the TT this year, here are his results.

Algarve: Win

Paris-Nice-Win

Castilla Leon-2nd

Pais Vasco-Win

Dauphine Libere-2nd and 5th(training race)

Spanish nats: Crushed Lulu's heart...Win

Yeah he's won over 50% of the TT's he's participated in and hasn't placed lower than 5th, that's damn good.

Of course he's had success in GT's to say the least, people may forget he's only participated in 4 of them in his career, winning 75% of those(or 3 of 4 for you not so good with percentages). He's beaten Menchov in the 07 Tour and 08 Giro. He got Evans in the 07 Tour, beat Andy in the.....OK hasn't raced against him yet but we'll soon have a head to head. He beat Sastre in the 07 Tour and 08 Vuelta, twice beat his teammate Levi in GT's. All of this before he became such a good TTist. Don't think he isn't motivated either people, he wants this one as much as anyone. His 07 Tour win felt a bit tarnished and he really wants to crush people this year, his whole focus is on these 3 weeks, so watch out!

fun right up

For me, its AC’s race … the instance he shows that his Paris Nice weakness was a one off. He seemed invincible pre PN and didn’t seel particularly great in Dauphiné (I Know he was acting as VV’s domestic).

If AC is weak, then it may become best TdF in recent memory.

But let’s all agree – AC IS A WHEEL SUCKER (in 2009 so far)

conta attacked often in pn, and but for one bad day....

and usually, the boy’s never seen an incline he hasn’t liked… or attacked a few times

Excuse me, he was a tremednous domestique at DL

his team leader for that race sucked on his wheel that final stage, what a great teammate he was! Umm yeah not the same team but that’s just a silly technicality. But umm Will, he attacked in Algarve, in Paris-Nice, in Pais Vasco, at last year’s Vuelta, at the 07 Tour. The only times he didn’t was when he was desperately trying to hold on at last year’s Giro, when he was helping Levi win at this year’s Castilla Leon, and when he was at DL for training purposes. Bert is the most attacking rider out of the favorite’s, he will probably be attacking on Arcalis and Verbrier, maybe Ventoux.

by Phil H. on Jun 30, 2009 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Just because someone does not attack when you think he should doesn’t make him a wheel sucker. If he never broke away from the group on his own I might agree but we’ve seen Contador fly solo many times. Or haven’t you been watching?

by tourbaby on Jun 30, 2009 5:40 PM EDT reply actions

Welcome!

But he’s right. He isn’t a wheelsucker but he clearly deserves that title for 2009. But I’m tired and can not fully remember what happened in PN.

In Paris Nice

Contador tried tied to win and did not win …. it was an important part to 2009 season

colour me stupid

but I don’t see the logical connection you used here between not winning and wheel sucking?

by rbjhan on Jun 30, 2009 10:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Well lets remember the race

attacked on a cat 3 climb to try to gain time on Chavanel even though he really didn’t have to. Then attacked on the big mountain top finish. Then pulled a lot at the front of the chase pack that went after Lulu on the penultimate stage. Ended P-N by attacking early on the final stage and single handily dropping all of his break-away companions by ridding at the front of the climbs the entire climb. Then still managed to sprint to 2nd behind a guy who was doped. Yeah, such a wheel-sucker!

by Phil H. on Jun 30, 2009 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions

methinks

Will being at the race might be why he thinks Bert wheel sucked PN :-)

in my limited experience, you get way better understanding of the whole race in front of your computer/teevee.

by rbjhan on Jun 30, 2009 10:58 PM EDT up reply actions

True, you do get a better view on the puter/TV

still am highly jealous of Will but someone needs to watch the race at home to correct him when he makes statements like these :)

by Phil H. on Jun 30, 2009 11:08 PM EDT up reply actions

no You are right - I meant he tried to win at PN and didn't

it was the DL where he “wheel sucked”

But I wasn’t trying to cause a fight – I actually love watching AC ride. I was mainly kidding around with my first post

by Willj on Jul 2, 2009 8:56 AM EDT up reply actions

He didn't win because of one bad stage were he had a hunger strike

and no team support, he dominated the TT and mountain top finish in P-N and since then has won P-V and looked fine at DL and won the Spanihs TT Nats. I wouldn’t make anything out of that race.

if Bert is a wheel sucker…
then…
errr…

My apologies …. I don’t know much about pro cycling and certainly don’t mean to offend anyone.

I am well known to make outrageous statements as an excuse to post a photo …. but … did you see Paris Nice? AC certainly wanted to win ……..

Or haven’t you been watching?

I've been watching... like never before

PdC’ers keep me all linked up to the race action, onsite photos and commentary, etc. etc. etc.

And some of the best and most envy producing onsite photos and commentary come from Willj.

“don’t know much about pro cycling”… so modest.

absolutely correct Phil the stats do not lie,

but also a certain Mr Armstrong we all know has looked carefully at the stats as well. Question is, does Lance in his own mind think that all other things being roughly equal he can beat Bert ? Hmmmm THAT is the question of the day. I would guess that more likely yes than no, Lance thinks he can just squeak out and edge out Contador, but only in a battle royale, including a mental battle royal. We shall see we shall see, I may be completely wrong I absolutely will be the first to admit Lance MAY not be even near the level of Bert, but myself I think he is close (AMAZING really that he will be close).
As Right Said Fred sings in “Stand up for the Champions” : Here we go it’s getting close, now it’s just who wants it most . . .

by peterfish on Jun 30, 2009 5:55 PM EDT reply actions

Surely he thinks he can beat him

I feel he’s in for a rude awakening, but of course I have no idea how good he still is.

by Phil H. on Jun 30, 2009 9:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Thanks for welcome, I’ve enjoyed reading for awhile, now that the Tour is here I want to join in!

Alberto always wants to win….he is competitive as hell. But when he loses he gets over it fast as long as he feels he did his best. He will be good at tour. Put money on him.

It was a beautiful sunny morning so i layered up and set off for a snowy 'cross ride along a roman road. I checked the thermometer when i got back to find it had been -10 throughout the ride! I had a lot of fun though and the views were spectacular.
