Cycling Interview with Bernhard Kohl, witness in the Vienna
doping affair
You need to lie if you want to join

The Austrian rider Bernhard Kohl (27) spent eight years doping.
He speaks freely about his experiences in the pack. "Everyone
still feel safe. "

Twice in his life Bernhard Kohl has been at a crossroads.
Eight years ago, when 19-year-old cyclist promise, he could choose between
stop or doping. Last year, after the third place in the Tour de France
and a positive doping test, he had that choice again.

The 27-year-old Austrian gave his recital price, thoughtful, in
good English: "I had after my suspension return.
For two years I had a perfect baptism, 20 liters of blood, I had
can save, and then I was back. It was easy
been possible. I had the choice to lie or not. "

Kohl wants the truth. It is not his intention cycling
‘to death’ with his confession, he stressed in Vienna, where he
Justice has been informed in detail about doping during his years
Rabobank, T-Mobile and Gerolsteiner. As a member of the training team
Rabobank he learned to speak English.

The rider, who is trained to sweep, hopes the sport ’a
little cleaner "to make, especially for the youth. "There is never
a world winner who has said exactly how it works in the
cycling. "

Responses from the pack he can guess. He would also have mad
response as another from the school would fold. ’They will say:
which is not in his head, he is crazy. For example, a rider
speak. He has no choice. "

You started as an amateur with doping. Why?

“In the youth and juniors was no question of doping. The
promises I came into the Austrian army sport. You are an amateur, but
you live Prof. The riders lived together.

“I was 19, but there were also older riders in, 22, 23. They
how it works. It starts with injecting vitamins and creatine.
Then EPA. The first spraying was obviously not fun. It
perspiration stood on my head. But it went right. A syringe is a syringe. Or
there are vitamins in it or EPO, is not much. "

You were right to refuse?

“If you’re 19 and see that amateurs use drugs, it is a
issue of 1 and 1 add. You know that the more professional and
systematic doping is used. You are at a crossroads: do you want
chance as a professional cyclist, you need to doping. Otherwise,
you stop. If you from your 13th’ve wanted nothing more than
professional cyclist, then choose for doping.

’Then the double life. In the beginning it is not so difficult, then
you have not much to talk about doping. But if you perform,
you are interesting for the media. Then you get the question: do you use
doping? Of course you say no. "

You last year during the Tour said that no doping used
while after interviews on your room underwent a blood transfusion.

“These are not nice moments. But if you want to join, if you
want to have the same opportunities as other riders, you lie. Lying
hear it, like eating, sleeping and drinking. You must otherwise
to do than you are, if you want to be professional. "

You have in 2003 and 2004 in the training team Rabobank drove.
Was used as doping?

“When Rabobank said that they were driving without doping. In my
first rate, they even become angry, because I had Red Bull
included. There is caffeine in.

’In a foreign team is different than home. You do not know how
it works. In Austria it was familiar, in the Netherlands I could not
properly assess what happened. I said what I did, I knew
not of others. But I could do what I wanted. In itself it is
no problem in the Netherlands using dope. The team management may
not 24 hours a day sitting next to you.

“The first year I used Rabobank not, because I was almost
not in Austria. I lost my contacts. The second year I
growth hormones and EPO, but not much. I earned at Rabobank
much less than in the Austrian army sport. "

Control Eerde Rabobank riders or team, the management of the
riders were responsible for their performance, with or without
doping?

“It is difficult to say. Cycling Teams are led by
former riders. They know how it works. They say they have nothing to do with
doping to want, because they are not otherwise find sponsors.
But they also know when it starts and how it happens. "

In 2005 you made the switch from Rabobank to T-Mobile. That team
there was systematic doping, using a laboratory in Freiburg.

’In T-Mobile, I was a kid compared to riders like Ullrich,
Zabel and Vinokoerov. I was not in the system of the team. Only after
I had become the third in the Dauphine Libere, I received a phone call
of doctors Lothar Heinrich: I once had after the Tour come and talk
in Freiburg. After that third place that I thought I might chance
made to participate in the Tour. That was not so and I now understand why:
I was not in the doping system from the team.

’In T-Mobile, I have taken the initiative. I thought: I am now
professional, there must be some system in the coming doping. I have in
Austria about it and I was released by Stefan Matschiner.
I called him and a week later we had an appointment.

’Matschiner asked me what my goals were and what I had
used. He found that I had many little doping. He saw
potential. I immediately got a bag with growth hormones and EPO for
at home. "

Via Matschiner you started in 2005 with bloeddoping in Human Plasma, the
matter where you witness justice in Austria are.

’From other riders I had heard about a blood bank in Vienna. They
said that many athletes were, as in Spain with doctor
Fuentes. Matschiner has brought me. I am three times
had two treatments of 2.000 euros and 2,500 euros. But
I have blood abandoned, I have never recovered. In
February 2006 burst the doping scandal surrounding the Austrian
independent cross-country skiers at the Winter Games in Turin. When is the blood
discarded. "

Customers of Human Plasma came together on Sunday at McDonald’s,
against the company. Were you not afraid to be recognized?

“I was still not known, but I saw it I knew athletes. Out
cycling, but also from rowing, athletics and swimming. You could out
see how normal it was. There were real highlights in, so I had
idea that I do well Saturday Of course I was not hanging around to
to see who is still more came. You made you off when you ready
was. But it said that there were about a hundred athletes, from
summer and winter sports. I do not mention names, who the police. There
I have everything. "

Human Plasma After you have two other athletes with a mobile
blood centrifuge bought so you could continue bloeddoping.
Justice suspects then Rabo Renner Michael Rasmussen is one of
that athletes should be.

‘It was an idea of Matschiner. Doctor Fuentes was strong in
News, Human Plasma too. It was a good option for me. The more
people, how dangerous. So if you have three of anything, the
probability that the wrong small. I’ve had with those other two never
spoken. "

During the Tour of 2008 was your mountain stages three blood
administered earlier declined. How was that?

“I was a hotel. Matschiner got the blood on the plane
and rented a room in the same hotel. Somewhere between the food, the
massage and the interviews I went through half hours back to the
room. Then it happened. Nobody saw it. The following morning was
Matschiner away. It was a bit exciting, but there could
little done. You can not test positive on your own blood. And
invasion is not often. "

Have you ever been afraid to be caught in doping?

’In the beginning a bit, but you will not be caught. I am about
two hundred times tested. I certainly had a hundred times must be positive,
but I was only once. The other hundred times, I was pure,
I used the whole year.

‘In the beginning I used normal EPO. Then you took a small dose ’s
evening at eight o’clock. You did the light from the phone and the door
locked. If the morning auditors were, you were already pure.

“You can always take drugs, because you use that stuff
inspectors can not find. There was much for sale that they could not
, like epovarianten as nesp, Aranesp and Cera. Now we have
new stuff. I felt safe. Everyone still feels
secure. "

Still?

’Sure, look at the Giro. Mentsjov won with an average
speed of 40.6 kilometers per hour. A few years ago everyone Saturday
to his neck in drugs and when they cause slower. And now would
everyone has clean? That is impossible. I do not say that
Mentsjov used. But the system does not. "

You know riders who do not use drugs?

“I know them, but these are not professionals. As far as I’ve seen is
not possible in the top cycling without doping. "

For Rabo Riders who ride ahead?

’It is. "

How can you so sure?

“Riders talk to each other. You talk with everyone. You talk to
two or three others, just on the bike or at the start. They have
two or three other friends. So it continues. "

Why your next used bloeddoping also Cera?

“If your blood gets back, make your body less red
corpuscle. Therefore you need a bit of EPO use.

You should also ensure that your blood does not fluctuate because of
the blood passport. You should not start the Tour with a
hematocrit value of 41 and end 49, which falls on. You can also
exaggerate and your blood value set at 50. Then you might win the
Tour, but then you also risk.

“My blood value was 45 when I did Cera. Because my blood value
my blood was as constant as passport, I was after a Tour
great contract with Silence-Lotto. I would be one million euros per year
will earn. They thought: pfoe third with a
blood value of 45, which is good. "

This contract is torn after you’re caught. You are stopped. Was
doping worth?

“I’m glad I’ve reached my goal. I am become the third
Tour, which was a boyhood dream. I know I can come when I
doping at the same level as the rest of the top. I’m no
guilty against riders.

“I am not rich for that. In T-Mobile I earned per year
approximately 20,000 clean. Of these almost half to doping. In
total doping me all these years about 70,000 euros. "

Will you help confession? Whether you are the scapegoat?

’That’s the system. Sometimes a rider be picked up, the rest is
normally. The team leaders may not know exactly what
happen, but they are long in the sport. Maybe they want
change, but they can not change. The biological
passport? With me were all good values. Internal control, such as
Rabobank? If you are professional to do doping, test yourself. "

Did you have cycled and used as you were not caught?

’Of course. Like other riders, on television. "

Yes I did

It kind of opened my eyes: the riders who use too much dope get caught, the riders who take dope like any other rider won’t get caught.

So it seems it’s not a matter of taking or not taking, it seems more like a matter of how much someone’s taking.

CQ has Frank winning by 5 seconds over Klodi

which would put him 3 seconds ahead of Klodi on GC.

Official results are up now.

They have Frank 4 secs over Kloden in GC, then Marcato at 1:32 and Breschel at 1:34. Andy is back in 7th at 2:06—looks like it’s big brother’s turn to win, as long as he can hold off Klodi tomorrow.

The Big Question though

How many exclamation marks did Frank get?

by ursula on Jun 6, 2009 1:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm sure it would have been more in the heat of the moment, but...
Frank Schleck won!!! Sorry, but twitter went down! 12 minutes ago from Tweetie

1000 mètres! Schleck mène!! about 2 hours ago from web

So only 3 for the win, unless you throw in the one from the apology, plus 2 for him leading at 1 km.

It was 11-6 in favor of Andy yesterday, so this should tie them up. But I suspect that if Twitter had been up at the crucial moment, Frank would be well ahead.
