A humble little report from the Smithfield Nocturne
[Update: Moved to the front page because PodiumCafe heartily approves of reports of domestic pro racing from around the world.]
On Saturday evening, after a nice long ride through the wilds of south Essex, my friend and I high tailed it into London for the Smithfield Nocturne, an elite criterium around the perimeter of Smithfield market (which sells meat) in the City. It featured several well known names in its field of 60, including trackies Rob Hayles and Ed Clancy, national crit champion Dean Downing and Katusha's Ben Swift, (also of Team Red Shorts ;) who proved very popular. All the top domestic teams were in attendance, including the ever suave Rapha Condor, Halfords, Candi TV (on Pinarello Princes in white and pink :O~......) and Plowman Craven.
Before the pros had their turn, there was an amateur support race, which was blitzed by local team London Dynamo. I must say I was very impressed by the turn of speed winner Cam Austin deployed to crack his breakaway partner. Chapeau to him. Here is a photo (none of the photos are great owing to my small and ineffective camera, which is bad in the dark and with moving objects...).

There was also a women's race, the watching of which made me feel pretty inadequate. As a point of interest, one of the competitors in this was none other than our sometime contributor Rebecca from ctv. If you're reading this Rebecca, the crazy people shouting for you about 20 metres past the start-finish line were my friend and me.
And so we came to the folding bike race. Hilarious. Competitors, who are supposed to wear office attire, do a le mans start, running to their bikes and unfolding them before setting off on five laps of the course. Some of them were scarily fast actually, but some, like this gentleman, took things at a rather more relaxed pace...

The meat of the evening came at the end, after further capers such as a fixie 'longest skid' contest (several wipeouts here) and a inter-city firm relay challenge. My photos of the main event are all speed blurs. The average speed must have been whopping as they went totally hell for leather for an hour plus five laps. There were various breakaway attempts, notably by Ben Swift and also Dean Downing, who is on fire at the moment in the Tour Series that's taking place across the UK at the moment. Rapha were also very active with Kristian House, who was fairly prominent in the Tour of Britain last year, and others looking very frisky. Ultimately though, it came down to a sprint from a whittled down pack, which was won by Russell Downing, Dean's brother, ahead of Tony Gibb and Ben Swift.

I managed to get to the front at the podium ceremony through some skilful elbow deployment. My closeness did mean I got totally drenched in champagne but at least I could finally get some half decent piccies! Geraint Thomas of Barloworld (who won last year) was on hand to present the prizes:

Grrr, why won't this bottle open?!

All in all, this was enormously good fun, but I might add the weather was FREEZING! June in Britain...so not nice.

Thanks for the report!
Sounds like a fun time. The guys in office attire on the folding bikes must have been hilarious. And GREAT pics of the young Swift one—his DS approves. :-)
Long day--bad grammar. That's the way it works.--Lance Armstrong
Super fun report.
Great stuff Albertina. Please keep them coming.
"…I saw bloody Cavendish coming, really fast…"
HH
yeah great report
I always see these advertised whenever I splurge and pick up an issue of Rouleur, so it’s nice to this report as I’ve been wondering about them. Great job!
Slightly off-topic: has anyone ever bought any Rapha stuff? (I think they’re one of the sponsors of this nocturne series?) It’s ridiculously expensive but I’m thinking of breaking the bank and buying one of their winter hats, so if anyone can vouch for their gear it’d be much appreciated.
No, never bought Rapha stuff....if only my salary were bigger.
I do love the way the Rapha boys look though…so stylish. Black and pink is one of my favourite combinations. They were indeed sponsoring this one. Even the programme was super stylish!
Adrenalina Italiana!
Yeah I agree, lovely stuff but I won’t be dropping $160 on a pair of gloves anytime soon. I do pick up Rouleur whenever I can, I don’t think there’s any publication of any kind that I enjoy more than that one.

Thanx albertina..
The old champagne drenching… funny when it is happening, but smells when having to get walk home after..haha. I did get a free drink for my drenching at the TDU, so you must be owed one from Russell.
and yep…. Agree majope..

Yeah, the top I was wearing still reeks!
As did my hair. It’s a miracle my camera still works.

Looks like a fun night!
If there is one thing that I am missing, even with all the fun I’m having, it’s going to a race, taking pics, and just being a fan and enjoying the fun! Love reading about the good stuff and seeing the races from so many different views! :-) Keep them coming!
I love C, not because he rocks as a cyclist, but because deep down he's a band geek! LOL!
don't worry
watching women race makes me feel pretty inadequate as well
nice report
sometimes life is a false flat
Nicely done!
Have you saw Helsy on the party?

Bummer for her!
That 4th picture is priceless btw… Could be out of a cartoon.. Meep meep mieuuuw

Or they were cycling faster then their shadow.. :)

lol, well the average speed must have been pretty high; it was a very intense race!

Great report Albertina!
And yes, sadly, I was with someone who hates sports period so the idea of going to London on her birthday to watch a bike race did not go down so well :( Perhaps next year.
If i make it to the Blackpool one i’ll be sure to take lots of photos though :)
"When he accelerates, he's like Superman emerging from the telephone booth!" La Gazzetta journo Paolo Condo talking about Edvald Boasson Hagen.
I like that one too
A big blur looks even more effective than a little blur. Now you just need to photograph them all cycling off a cliff, stopping, looking down and then falling. And work in the anvil, too.
Cycling.tv used to have
A bunch of premier calendar races on it. I think I probably watched them all as they were free. I really like the aggressive style of the racing, fun to watch. There is a race, can’t remember the name of it, where they race for a time on dirt/gravel roads. Good stuff. Also, I think it was ITV 4 that was showing the Tour series the other night, IIRC. Great post. I know that Russell Downing raced for Health Net a couple of years ago but couldn’t really get to the States because of visa problems. A damn shame really.
If I just had one more gear, I...
Yes, ITV4 are showing the Tour Series every Wednesday evening at the moment.
I’m going to try and get to the one in Southend on the 25th, assuming my meeting at work doesn’t drag on…well actually, if it does I’ll just leave! It’s really fun, fast and furious, and the crowds are big and friendly; about 10,000 people there on Saturday. To my shame, I’ve never really got into domestic racing much until now, but I’m loving what I’ve seen!
Adrenalina Italiana!
In other news, Albertina went to a meat market to see men in tights.
Respect the Shit List; it respects you.
I was in the women's race
and it was great! Nearly lost my front wheel on one of the tight corners early on — there were two that were about 120degrees with an uphill/downhill to boot — after which I just hung out at the back of the group and enjoyed the atmosphere. I was in no danger of winning anyway! Tons of fun to race in front of so many spectators and teammates (who seemed to get happier and louder with each lap, they were at the “pub corner”).
Great! The pace looked really fast from where I was standing..I certainly would have been straight out of the back!
I thought those corners must have been rather trecherous, although I was near the start/finish line so couldn’t see them. Who do you ride for?
Adrenalina Italiana!
I agree! Just read up on the last posting. Good stuff and more pictures! :-)

gasp I’m actually a triathlete moonlighting as a cycle racer :)
I ride for the Kingston Wheelers as my home club, and the Surrey League women’s team in the Team Series.
well, if you rode this without crashing
then you’re not really a triathlete :)
(Glad to see you here)
There's also a folding bike world championship
At least there was one last year at Blenheim Palace. Oh wait, it was called the Brompton World Championships, but same deal: office attire and folding bikes. Roberto Heras was there in his first race back from suspension but some guy named Alastair Kay won, Heras was 2nd.
good wasn't it?
had similar problems with taking photos but was rather pleased with how this one came out showing the nat champ’s jersey looking rather resplendent – sadly his brother one the race!

Oh I like that!
Glad you had fun too. I wanted a Rapha Condor win, but never mind! You a Londoner then?
Adrenalina Italiana!
A small number I think.
I live in Upminster and work in the West End….what a lovely commute I had this morning, not!
Adrenalina Italiana!
Nice write-up
and thanks to smaryka et al for additional reporting.
I’d forgotten it was on, but there’s a BC report with pics.
Folding bike pics already on Flickr. The fourth Brompton Worlds will be on 4th October at Blenheim.
Formerly known as ruralwales.
Thanks for the BC link-good stuff!
As an aside, I was crossing the road near Holborn tube today and there was a Rapha Condor rider, in full kit and on a team bike sitting at the junction. Where on earth was he going in the rush hour in central London in full team attire?! Most odd. Don’t know who it was…..perhaps it was a (rich) wannabe!
