Tour de France Stage 8: Post-Stage Thread

Tour-post-stage-sm_mediumLovely scenery today, and some really cool moments (Casar bridging up to LuLu & co on a descent), but very little of importance. One wonders if the Tour people really believed that somehow a stage ending in a 30km descent would cause a result, but more likely everyone knew this would be a GC nothing-burger. Results:

  1. Luis Leon Sanchez, Caisse d'Epargne
  2. Sandy Casar, Francais de Jeux, st
  3. Mikel Astarloza, Eusketel-Euskadi, st
  4. Vladimir Efimkin, AG2R, +3"
  5. JJ Rojas, CdE (+1'54")

No change on GC, which Astana probably appreciates. Look for them to avoid yellow tomorrow too, since it's the last day before a thankless week of defending on flatter stages. In case you forgot:

  1. Rinaldo Nocentini, AG2R
  2. Alberto Contador, Astana, at 0.06
  3. Lance Armstrong, Astana, at 0.08

I won't be around much today, big family action here, but please do keep the chatter going. We will do additional post-race threads if it starts bulging like yesterday.

Look for Saxo

to try and drop Nocentini tomorrow again. I think they were trying to get the maillot jaune onto Astanas shoulders today.

Would be a very smart move.

It puts pressure on Astana which is the only way you will get Contador to crack, as we saw in Paris/Nice.

Astana has a much more motivated group than in P/N.

That doesn't really matter.

Because if you want to beat Contador, you really have only one choice right now. You must get him into the yellow jersey. I know Astana has a better crew, but if you really want to beat him you must get him into yellow.

Probably not

But worth a try. As it stands they have total control and are under no pressure.

Yeah but again, Astana will just let another break go and gain huge time

they aren’t doing any work what so ever until the Alps, the flats are for the sprint teams, if they want glory they have to do the work. Astana sits back and hopes someone else gets the lead.

by Eucboy on Jul 11, 2009 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah but I think they wanted Astana to have the yellow in the mountains tomorrow

if they have it in the flats they won’t do much work. Why should they care if it’s a sprint or nor? Columbia will be back to going on the front.

So much is available on line or On Demand that I rarely miss having DVR. Pro cyclists start carrying on like 3 y.o’s in a temper tantrum when a G.C contender in their break is no longer to their advantage. Oh well, that’s racing, and a little bit to do with why you don’t often see serious GC threats in breaks – usually a waste of energy…

I am not denying that!

Just saying it was ironic that Cancellara was whining and then the first to get dropped.

"We will do additional post-race threads if it starts bulging like yesterday."

For what it’s worth, yesterday’s behemoth thread doesn’t take any longer to load than this one does. Is everything we know wrong?

Maybe so, I have browsed other SB sites before

and many for big American sports, such as baseball, put up one live game thread and it gets up to over 1000 before a potential 2nd thread.

I'm on a crappy computer right now

and it does get mighty sluggish when we reach big numebers (350+) . Comments start coming in lumps of 5-10 rather than one at a time. It’s almost impossible to post as the cursor simply will not appear in the commentbox while other comments are loading (which they are pretty much all the time) . It also clogs the entire browserwindow making it hard to alternate between tabs. On IE.

So he is a man...

Didn’t know that was in doubt

I hope he doesn't have a girlfriend at home

or that is going to get him into so much trouble. The smile in the end specifically.

the video is the thing to see, though.

Funny in two respects. Turns out that Obama isn’t checking her out at all. In fact, he’s helping someone else down the stairs. Sarkozy? Goes to great lengths to maintain the checkout. Hilarious.

I know this is from a few days ago

but just wanted to make sure everyone saw/heard these audio clips on the NY Times site, including a great clip from Jens! about pet peeves on the Tour

Mixing it up

Is anyone else thrilled to see AGR2 light it up in this tour? Must be the new jerseys.

From Chris Anker Sörensens TdF Blog
You are a bit of a mountain ape?
Yes this was the question this morning from a team of Norwegian journalists. I do not think it was the best interview I have given during the tour here because I just did not understand everything he said. The Norwegian language is a bit of puzzle or the journalist was just very drunk, but so are probably Norwegians in general. They were at least the one time I sailed with the Oslo ferry. But back to the interview, one can easily imagine he said something about the team and I answered about what I expected of myself on todays stage. But I could not but confirm that mountain monkey, that was me. And it served me well on today’s stage. We started up a 23 km long climb, and gosh was it hard, the first man was dropped after a kilometer or so. I fortunately had fairly good legs, though of course you can feel you are a week into the tour. I also helped put pressure on up to today’s final mountain, so Andy could try to shake the competitors. As you probably saw nothing came out of it, but who dares nothing wins nothing. In other highlights, today I made a personal speed record for the year’s tour, 104 mph down the last descent.

Very ambitious blog with almost daily updates. Google translation works well enough. This translation was slightly improved(?) by me.

A frozen 'cross ride from this last weekend. As you may be aware we have had siberian conditions here in the UK with a low of -14 degrees centigrade here on saturday morning. It was a beautiful sunny morning so i layered up and set off for a snowy 'cross ride along a roman road. I checked the thermometer when i got back to find it had been -10 throughout the ride! I had a lot of fun though and the views were spectacular.
