"I'll quit when I fall off my bike"

"I'll quit when I fall off my bike." That's what Kenny said in this Dutch article after stage 15 when he crossed the finish line 45mins after Contador did (last place)

Star-divide

hummel_jpg_643214i
Kenny van Hummel crossed the finish after the climb of the Verbier this Sunday with a fistpump and a loud scream. The rider on Skil arrived in time only to start again after a rest day. "Today I literally ate my handlebar. I didn't care if I was gonna make it in time or not. I'm tough, I'll quit when I fall off my bike. A lot of sprinters went home already, but Kenny van Hummel is still here. And I'm proud of that."

Kenny has now been riding for over 3hrs more than Contador has in this TdF. I'd say that Van Hummel is probably the toughest guy in the race at this point. Do you think that Armstrong or Contador have suffered as much as Kenny? I think not.

These guys don’t need no stinking polemica.

When is Het whatever next year?

"The road is our agony, but also our daily bread; and at night, when it is deserted and the moon glistens on the asphalt, the ridiculous dreams of racers like us pass up and down it."

My favorite other Kenny fact...

He has way more wins than any other rider on Skil-Shimano this year. It’s not even close. This guy isn’t some third rate rider. He wins bike races.

This degree of character and perseverance makes you think he’s gonna win a lot more of them before he’s done.

I love this guy

Even if he’s now speaking of himself in the third person.

What the hell kind of attitude is that?

Where would Fränk Schleck be today if he had an attitude like that?

by Jens on Jul 21, 2009 3:17 AM EDT reply actions

Fränk finds plenty of other opportunities

to eat his own handlebar. Usually while flying over a guardrail.

Jens Voigt doesn’t know where you live, but he knows exactly where you will die.

Wahoo Kenny.

I’m thinking someone needs to tweet Keeny, and tell him of our PdC love for him..

Cheered him on as loudly as i could...

… on my corner in Verbier, as did the rest of the crowd still hanging around

He’s a big lad in the flesh, that’s for sure :-)

Hope to see him atop Petit St Bernard before it gets dark today!!

Roger that!

I stopped and laid my bike down on the freewheel off the mountain to cheer Kenny on…

BIG Gonads on that one and he’s right- A lot of cats are home on the couch and he is still working so a BIG Chapeau to him!

It's the characters that make it

more than just “a race”.

Naturally we all want to see the best riders go head-to-head, but it’s not merely that. As fans we want more than winning, we want drama and stories, personalities and hardship. We want others to see the greatness in this sport that makes them our heroes. The power and pride of wearing the maillot jaune, Heinrich Haussler’s emotions on winning stage 13, Cancellara descending, the spat between Cavendish and Hushovd, the Lanterne Rouge and a thousand more. Kenny’s story will surely be worth retelling in years to come.

The only thing that would make this more awesome

…would be if he were to chug a can of Schaeffer’s after he finished.

When I'm on the mic, I'm like global warming, you can't ignore me.

As I mentioned in one of the stage threads

I’ve never been this emotionally invested in the lanterne rouge before. I hope he makes it to Paris

Great finish today.. Wahoooo

Let’s hope we see him in Paris!!

Love this quote from Kenny
“I can hear all the fans cheering me as I ride and it’s spurring me on.If I can make it tomorrow then maybe I can make it to Paris. I want to sprint on the Champs-Élysées.”

When it happens

When Kenny crosses the finish in Paris, I will most likely be sobbing like a baby. If he cannot make the time cut on stage 17 I will be sobbing like a baby. Kenny has brought me to a point that no matter what happens I am going to be sobbing. Most Americans are so caught up with Lance and who wins, I think the world would be a better place if people focused on Kenny.

by Logy on Jul 22, 2009 1:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Go Kenny

I wonder, will he break a record? What’s the biggest time gap between the winner and the Lanterne in modern times?

by MathieuG on Jul 21, 2009 10:26 PM EDT reply actions

Was just shy of Top of Petit St Bernard yesterday and we waited for Kenny!!

LOUDEST cheer of the day as he came round our hairpin. Massive grin on his face. Fans literally passing him from one to the other & PUSHING up the slope. 1 steep bit, 3 people pushed him up together – cheering continued all the way over.

One occasion where crowd interference was truly welcome :-)

Last 3 km on Col de La Colombiere may require same “assistance” for Kenny, i’m thinking

by grim grimpeur on Jul 22, 2009 4:13 AM EDT reply actions

thats sounds awesome.. you have to be there to help him!!

We want to see him in Paris!

But not climbing.

He did not like climbing. At all.

by tedvdw on Jul 22, 2009 5:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not sure he would have minded so much...

…except France had the bad taste to have these mountains, MOUNTAINS, with roads on them.

It wasn't France...

Garmin put those mountains there just to screw with Kenny. When that wasn’t enough to stop him, JV had the team car run him off the road. Sure I know there is no camera footage, but that is only because the Garmin team had it destroyed.

A frozen 'cross ride from this last weekend. As you may be aware we have had siberian conditions here in the UK with a low of -14 degrees centigrade here on saturday morning. It was a beautiful sunny morning so i layered up and set off for a snowy 'cross ride along a roman road. I checked the thermometer when i got back to find it had been -10 throughout the ride! I had a lot of fun though and the views were spectacular.
