EL PAIS Interview With Armstrong

After Stage 16, EL PAIS, the Spanish newspaper, along with other international Media, interviewed Lance Armstrong. Some interesting excerpts on the other side. the English is my rough translation

Star-divide

P. ¿Le gusta Alberto Contador?

Q: Do you like Alberto Contador?

ARMSTRONG: I do not know him well. We never have had the opportunity to know each other well. We are separated by language, culture, lack of time around each other.

Q: Has your relationship changed since Sunday [Verbier]?

ARMSTRONG: No, it has not changed much since Verbier, it is about the same. There has been no moment that has produced a change.

Q: Have you felt slighted by his silence towards you?

ARMSTRONG: It is hard to say. I probably would have acted in a different manner. If I was put in his position, in 199 or 2000, when I was young and ambitious, and if Indurain had joined my team, he would have been the leader of the team. It's Indurain! That does not mean he would have won, but he is the leader because he is a legend.

Q: Your situation with Contador is as if an ex-boyfriend returned to steal your girlfriend?

ARMSTRONG: Alberto is tough and committed. but that is the way you have to be in cycling.

Q: Don't you think that you underestimated Contador when you announced your return during last year's Vuelta? you did not mention him even once in the interview when you announced your return?

No, no le he subestimado.

ARMSTRONG: No. First, the announcement was not planned for the Vuelta, when he was the leader. We did not want to distract, but a leak obligated us to release the announcement. No, no I did not underestimate him. We knew he was good. Very very good. Like I said after the team time trial, I was unfair to Sastre and Vande Velde, and I apologized for what I said. But Alberto, seeing his accelerations en La Vuelta, seeing how he won the Giro without preparing, coming from a vacation, that is not easy, absolutely. And Johan [Bruyneel] has the experience to see how he matured, how he imporved in the time trial.

. . . P. ¿Puede derrotar a Alberto, de todas maneras?

Q: Can you beat Alberto, in any event?

ARMSTRONG: I don't think so this year. Alberto is super, and I am sure he will but just as good in the time trial. If he avoids errors, which I am sure he will, nobody can beat him. Next year . . . that is another story. This year, also, it was more difficult because we were on the same team, I have to resct that, I can's attack him, I can't exploit his bad moments, if he has them, but if I was on another team . . .

P. ¿Estará más fuerte en 2010, entonces?

Q: You'll be on another team in 2010 then?

ARMSTRONG: I believe so. the problem is not age, but the years I have been inactive, the 3 years that I did not compete since 2005. In returning to the peloton, I was the first to brake in case of doubt, now I am almost the las, but I miss the instincts, the rhythm of competition, the recovery. The problem is not being 38 or 39. I think being older I will be better.

And he'll kick Lance's ass next year too.

I must say that interview sums up what I hate about Lance’s personality in one neat little package.

Agreed. Interesting hint that AC won’t follow JB and LA to new sponsor

i don't know...

JB has good powers of persuasion, and JB believe in him in 07.

That's not a hint

That’s the old dog saying there’s no damned way I’ll have the new dog in my kennel. I’ll give the old man credit – he’s riding pretty well right now. Why not keep going? Better than snorting coke on planes. Pity the time off hasn’t taught him humility or class – but he hasn’t earned hundreds of millions for being a nice bloke, I guess.

Lance

Did it look like that he tried to chase Contador on the first alps stage? Same deal yesterday?

by Crazy D on Jul 23, 2009 7:03 AM EDT reply actions

No

When Lance went he attempted to drop the people he was riding with to bridge across alone, which is proper. Also he has a podium position to protect, despite what some people think, a podium position is still a big deal. Alberto rode stupidly yesterday in dropping Kloden, strong but stupid, again despite what some say. Bert’s position at the top is secure barring any unfortunate act, he should have thought to keep Kloden with him yesterday. In the end he was fine but helped the Shlecks by dropping Kloden.

I don’t agree completely on Contador, but I do agree on Armstrong, it’s fine to bridge if you don’t bring the other guys with you. Smart move in hindsight as it gives him a few seconds’ lead on Wiggins after today.

Lance now speaks in third person too!! so modest…

In terms of ability

Lance and Indurain are comparable. In terms of character….well…that’s a completely different story of course. Bad analogy Lance…

by Fernando on Jul 23, 2009 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions

How was that "stupid"

AC attacked to distance both Schlecks, and he had the consent of Kloden. Kloden dropped more then a minute in the span of 1 kilometer, which means he was dropped because the pace was too much for him, not because of AC’s acceleration.

A frozen 'cross ride from this last weekend. As you may be aware we have had siberian conditions here in the UK with a low of -14 degrees centigrade here on saturday morning. It was a beautiful sunny morning so i layered up and set off for a snowy 'cross ride along a roman road. I checked the thermometer when i got back to find it had been -10 throughout the ride! I had a lot of fun though and the views were spectacular.
