Deep Breath...

It's been a crazy, exciting, frenzied couple of days. Comment threads are overloaded and packed with debate and analysis. Frankly, it's all a little much. So here is an image to help you relax your mind. Use this thread as the second post-race one.

Probably a stupid question

but I put it out there – besides picking up 40 seconds on Saxo and the Schlecks and 18 seconds on Garmin and Wiggins, has being on Astana helped Contador at all in this Tour?

I ask this not because I doubt that Bruyneel was working more for a high position for Armstrong than doing anything for Contador. I do not doubt it at all.

But what benefit did Contador get out of being on Astana? In the el pais interview I posted about here, Armstrong said:

Q: Can you beat Alberto, in any event? ARMSTRONG: I don’t think so this year. Alberto is super, and I am sure he will but just as good in the time trial. If he avoids errors, which I am sure he will, nobody can beat him. Next year . . . that is another story. This year, also, it was more difficult because we were on the same team, I have to respect that, I can’t attack him, I can’t exploit his bad moments, if he has them, but if I was on another team .

(My emphasis.) Could Astana, sans Contador, have beaten a Contador on another team? Thoughts?

by BTD on Jul 23, 2009 3:42 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Hmm

You’re probably right that Astana didn’t do anything specifically or Contador, and rather they did a great job of really protecting 4 riders for a while, and then 3 after Levi.

I think it’s pretty obvious that Contador was not beatable this year. He was never put into difficulty, while every single other rider was on multiple occasions.

Every year is different, and you have to wonder if Contador goes to a new Spanish team that is poorly run if his training will suffer, his team will be weak, and a couple powerful teams like Saxo wouldn’t be able to make him suffer.

by whistlingmountain on Jul 23, 2009 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

TTT is another factor

if that new Spanish team drops 4 or 5 minutes to RadioShack next year, then, sure, AC is beatable

Yes it is.

As stated above, no one was beating Bert this year, nor for the next several it looks to me. No way LA and JB could have beaten him. That’s why they diss him, he’s taken the shine off of their apple, licked the red off their candy.

Bert went mano a mano with LA / JB, while on their team, and did not blink.

Professional to the (near) end… more so then the cringing, complaining, cryptic symboled Lance.

Simple… Bert hurts LA’s brand.

Next years TdF will be the most hyped ever. Teh Lance vs. Evil Bert.

by Vlaanderen90 on Jul 23, 2009 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Which also raises this issue for me

Did Bruyneel undermine his own reputation as a brilliant director by, in essence, making it look like Contador was basically riding on his own, apart from the team, and oftentimes in contravention to his instructions?

In other words, did Bruyneel outsmart himself here, favoring Lance? Obviously, or at least obviously to me, Contador will never ride for Bruyneel again and I doubt he will have many kind words for Bruyneel now.

Armstrong will form a team for the 2010 Tour with Bruyneel and presumably that team will be built for Armstrong. What if Armstrong does not win? What in fact, Armstrong does not even make the podium?

Bruyneel will have sacrificed a professional relationship with likely one of the dominant rider of the next 5 years for what exactly?

by BTD on Jul 23, 2009 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

I think people who want to see Brunyeel lose are expecting it to be devastating on him, when in reality..

I think he looks much happier race to race with Lance on the team than in the couple years without. He probably makes way more money via sponsorships and projects with him. They’re close friends.

I really don’t see how his life or history would suffer if he never has a tour winning rider again, he’s now had what? 9? He makes 3-5 million a year salary?

I think he’ll be ok, regardless of what happens.

by whistlingmountain on Jul 23, 2009 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, but it is weird

to have a DS jeopardising a relationship with the best stage-race rider of his generation, for more buddy time with Lance.

Even if it involves (probably) a lot more cash.

by Mark T1979 on Jul 23, 2009 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think it would be weird if Lance was just a good racer and Bruyneel and he had not won 7 tours together.

I don’t think he requires more tour de france champions to validate his career. He’ll probably just retire with Lance the next time Lance retires. Plus there’s always the challenge of unseating a true champion. Could be fun for him.

Anyway, I don’t know how much he jeopardized it though aside from basically staying mute while Lance tweets little jabs at Contador. Bruyneel always seems very attentive to him, speaks spanish to him, brought a spanish rider on board for him. Sends Kloden with him. shrug

by whistlingmountain on Jul 23, 2009 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No

Bruyneel has been sniping at Contador publically.

I assume at the behest of Armstrong.

by BTD on Jul 23, 2009 4:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hmm

Well, I think it has been pretty plain on the Kloden incident. On the Arcalis break. Not stopping Armstrong and Leipheimer from criticizing Contador. Heck, a lot of Versus interviews.

Let me put it this way, in the Spanish press, it is perceived that way. I certainly think it is accurate.

by BTD on Jul 23, 2009 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with you

but I thought I said that. The only thing I have seen him do “against” contador, is being idle while Lance ( and Levi that one time, but mostly Lance ) jabs at him constantly with little underhanded tweets.

I don’t know what goes on behind the scenes afterward for Bruyneel to try to stop that, maybe he tries and Lance just can’t help himself because he’s an inner ultra-competitive jerk who likes to push buttons of all current and potential future competitors. Just saying that Bruyneel hasn’t done the sniping, at least not that I’ve seen.

as it’s turned out, Murayev has been a strong tempo rider. I’m not sure how much help either Horner or Leipheimer would have actually provided on this route—although they perhaps could have upset the Saxo-nation.

I put him down pre-Tour but Muravyev was a great rider for the team. On the other end, I thought Zubeldia was not nearly as good as I thought he’d be.

Zubeldia has been riding tempo on the climbs pretty decently

but he gets the early climb grunt work spot and Kloden keeps getting all the money shots. Horner would have done as good a job as Zubeldia, plus he would have been more entertaining from a post race interview perspective. I miss that this tour…

Yes, only, then....why contest the frigging TdF? Why remain as a DS?

Why hire Alberto? Sure, he said he was kinda burnt out before hiring Contador. But it looks to me like he was a motivator, not a passive participant, in Lance’s return. sort of makes Alberto into the kid he’s boinking while separated from his spouse, and then shoving out the door when the reconciliation happens.

Since when is sending one rider with your team leader a normal level of support?

by JFS_PGH on Jul 24, 2009 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You ignore the power of the ego

Bruyneel, like most successful people, has a huge ego. No doubt it was necessary for his success.

If this experiment flops with Armstrong (and defining a flop will be interesting – does Armstrong have to win in 2010? If not, what result is necessary?, it will be a serious blow to Bruyneel’s reputation and ego.

In fact, I think his reputation would definitely suffer if this is it for him in terms of winning riders. Irt was a real throw of the dice.

by BTD on Jul 23, 2009 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

by tgartner on Jul 23, 2009 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree too.

Johan + Lance is where’s it’s at.

Yeah, Johan going back to Lance makes little sense in a way (if you think winning as much as possible the only definition to success) and I think Johan in particular handled it poorly form day one where the news took over the Vuelta last year (where it even flustered Levi) but there you are.

Johan’s rep took a hit in 2006 when Disco did so poorly in that Tour. He got some back in 07 with Bert, but the bloom is off- Johan needs a great rider more than a great rider needs him. Still, he’s as good a Grand Tour DS as anyone else going these days. But next year he ain’t gonna win the Tour.

What is the question exactly? (majope I think is giving a little talk to Black Unicorn.)

by ursula on Jul 23, 2009 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hmmm. Hard to say.

Do I think he would have done better if the team didn’t have Bert? Would he have won?

No I don’t think so. This Tour was set up beautifully for him to be in contention for as long as he was. (Same for Wiggins though that was a collateral effect). It was very backloaded so as long as Lance didn’t fuck up somewhere before Verbier he was always gonna be in contention entering the final week. I should ad that it wasn’t all the course though. As we know Johan always built a good Tour team full of solid domestiques. Even without Bert they probably would have won the TTT and Lance was smart in making the break on that windy stage early on.

But Lance is being exposed in the mountains and Bert or no, that was always gonna happen. In fact with Cadel bailing and Sastre and Menchov having put so much into the Giro and Gesink crashing out, the competition at this Tour is, in retrospect, unusually thin IMO. Without Bert in the race Andy Schleck would be having an easier time of winning than his erstwhile teammate Sastre did last year.

So this is a long winded way of saying that having Bert on his team didn’t hurt Lance much if at all. Lance had a good team behind him, he had his experience to draw upon, the breaks have gone his way, and Johan had a good game plan for him so he’s gone as far as he can. Top 3-5 is great for him. He could have easily been out of the top 10 with or without Bert. Next year I think that (out of top 10) will be his fate even as THE protected rider on his team.

by ursula on Jul 23, 2009 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

excellent points

only thing is i think LA will still be strong next year, if he can stay upright, enough for top10, even top5 if he gets good breaks – except, as i think you have implied, the rest of the field (the top3 plus wig, vdv, nibali and other possible young guns) will be even stronger.

I do think far too much has been made out of the inner aspects of the team...

… but it’s not surprising. I suspect that there is no loathing between any of these guys. It’s a professional relationship and, occasionally, there are friendships of the Lance Armstrong / Bruyneel sort, but that is decidedly the exception, not the rule. I would never have expected Bruyneel and Contador to give each other warm stone massages… but I bet there were quite a few occasions when Bruyneel was in an unmarked Skoda pacing up behind Contador in pre-race training that none of us ever saw… same as he does with Armstrong.

I’m well aware of the secession movement, though most of my Belgian friends think its crazy. I dunno if they’re so much Flemish or Brussels-ish tho. And anyway they’re the kind of academic intellectual types who’re probably not the target audience for Flemish nationalism in the first place, I’d guess.

And I realize this is a "drama" sort of a comment

But I do not mean it to be that way. In essence, Armstrong has the mind a champion – he can not stand to lose. It can be off putting, to say the least. To my eyes, he has handled this badly as has Bruyneel.

But everyone is entitled to act in their interest. Clearly Armstrong perceived himself as acting in his interest. Contador made sure his interests were not sacrificed (I am thinking of Arcalis especially.)

The guy that perplexes me is Bruyneel. I do not see that he acted in his best interests.

Contador would be less than a minute up at best without Astana.

Might not even be leading. These guys crushed the course and pounded the stages. Alberto still might have won, but on, say, Lotto, he would be no where near the power position he is in now. It would have been a hugely more exciting race!

by Markk on Jul 23, 2009 4:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wouldn't even be leading? Not so sure about that.

If he was on Silence-Lotto, he would have lost 2 and a half minutes compared to being on Astana. So purely mathematically, as he is currently over 4 minutes ahead of Andy, he’d be well over a minute up.

But we are entering the realm of the hypothetical…
