I have a strong feeling how Versus coverage is going to go
I just went to set up my DVR for the Tour and what should greet me? Until approximately 2am EST tomorrow, Vs has something Lance related every hour on the hour. For the next 8 hours it might as well be called the Lancus channel.
My question - does this surprise you, gentle viewer?

Er, no
No, it doesn’t.
Heh, perhaps I will be going with the audio-only option this year.
I really do need either a European proxy or someone in Europe with Slingbox. Then, I’d be like so golden…

Actually
This is the reason why I am not watching the race live. I’ll DVR it and skip as much as possible the commercials and Lance-orientated and really all rider profiles.
The picture will focus on Lance like nobody’s business. Remember how excessive the video focused on lance at the Giro? This will be much worse. But that’s not a Versus problem. Everyone’s getting the same feed, sling box with a friend in Europe or no.

Are you sure?

Positive.
They won’t take their lenses off of him. I’m just glad he’s going early tomorrow (on purpose? yes.) so we will see the likes of Cance, Bert, Cadel, etc.

yeah I agree
L’équipe ran this hilarious story a few days ago called “come see the beast” if I remember right – a quote from the mayor of some town in the south of France who said some love Armstrong, some hate him, but it doesn’t matter, everyone will come out to see the beast ;)

I wonder if Versus is now scrambling
to rearrange their coverage of tomorrow’s stage.
I hoping that the announcement that Armstrong will be one of the first riders to depart means Versus won’t do their usual routine of abandoning coverage of the first two hours of a time trial in favor of features on what Lance eats for breakfast, etc.

scheduled to start at 9.30 am eastern....
that’s more than half an hour before armstrong starts

Yeah, that's when they go on the air
but the question is, will it be actual race coverage, or their usual introductory hour of talking heads and interviews with everyone who’s ever met Lance Armstrong.
I’m hoping Lance’s early start means we actually get full race coverage.

Spin
It should suit Vs that he roll out of the starthouse early. If he posts the fastest time, it’ll encourage viewers to watch more closely as each rider attempts to unseat him, rather than to just tune in for the last half hour of the broadcast to see how he rides. Afterall, ITTs can get a bit dull for the first hour, before the big hitters roll out.

Which won't be long
As Larsson finishes 19 minutes after Lance, Levi, 20 minutes, and Grabsch 35 minutes.

The morning coverage will be the best for Versus.
It is the prime time coverage I fear, featuring that ignoramous Craig Hummer. At least with Phil and Paul one can enjoy counting how many times they mention their beloved Big George per hour.

I almost forgot about Hummer
Back from his bull riding assignment, it’d be nice if he refrains from speculating how pro cyclists would fair against MMA contenders in “the octagon”. His previous comments to Bob Roll on this earned him my Douchbag of the Decade Award for sports journalism. Its my guess that he got beat up a lot as a kid with a name like “Hummer”.

The sad part about this is that even though I have VS.
I’m soooooooo tempted to try to watch on a bad web feed just to avoid all of this. Surely there’s a language out there where I won’t even be able to recognize when the commentators say Lance’s name, right?
by Ed K on Jul 3, 2009 10:17 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
And yes VS thread scanners, take note.
Your coverage is so infuriating that its making people who have your damn channel look for other options, so possibly, if you give two shits about your advertising revenue, consider not insulting the intelligence of the cycling fans in your audience.

In hindsight, all is forgiven
I just watched stage 20 from 2005 where Rasmussen crashed / changed bikes 6 times and lost over 7’. I haven’t laughed that hard in a long time.

at the time
it felt a little like watching someone kick a sick puppy. But now that we know more about the chicken, it’s pretty funny.

Phil Ligett
I love it when Phil refers to somebody that’s having a bad day as “poor-ol’ ________” It always sounds so pathetic, especially the tone of his voice, so dissappointed!! Micheal Rasmussen on stage 20 and Fabian Wegmanin general come to mind.

But Why?
We know why Landis fell apart and then became superhero one stage to the next. Watching Rasmussen and his inconsistency over the years, was answered the same way when he was busted for doping…it made me remeber that time trial in 2005 on stage 20 when he fell apart after looking so solid. Guess he was afraid of a test that day and didn’t get his spinach.

Honestly I don;t mind the Versus TdF coverage.
Probably because I am so used to insipid sports programming. It helps to have a DVR obviously. And even Craig Hummer- I’ll take him over Al Trautwig any day.
And actually if they have Frankie Andreu on at times again, he sometimes delivers some good insights.

I'll take Hummer over Traut anyday
which sounds less kinky than the alternative…

Yeah I fear just how bad this can get, but it's the only live cycling in the US on TV
meaning I can actually chat in the live race thread here(stop moaning people!). Am just watching a dumb piece on a dumb ass network(espn), not really paying attention, something with dramatic music and comebacks. Compared cycling missing Lance to wall street missing 2007(not joking).

I for one was glad that I had Versus
When I started riding, Versus/OLN was was got me tuned into the Tour in the first place and cycling in general. I am in Germany now and don’t have Versus anymore, so I will miss it but I have Eurosport UK now so all will be good. But the point of all this is that there is actual coverage of the Tour on in the States, pretty much something cycling related all day and all night for the next three weeks, so why complain about it? There’s nothing to be gained by people not tuning in except for it to go off the air and people complaining because it is no longer on.
If I just had one more gear, I...
by SpunOut on Jul 4, 2009 2:33 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Agreed
I have complaints about programming across all stations and networks….Versus will have the program that I will be watching so….it beats whatever else is on. I’m just happy to see the tour, if necessary I’ll tune out the chatter. As for Lance over-obsession, I don’t see the major problem here either. He will still be THE name of cycling in 50 years most likely. Only smart to market and sell him when you can. I’ll be glad when I don’t have to see him anymore, but I’m glad I got to see him.

The concept of "be happy you get anything"
didn’t work when my parents tried to get me to eat my veggies when I was three. It sure isn’t going to work now. There is much better coverage out there than what Vs is shoving down our throats. It might take a little bit of work to find it, but it’s there. And if it means I get to learn Russian in the process, so much the better…

and the recaps during the slow middle period included L.A., but also everyone else after him who was in first place for a while. Not too Lance heavy at all.
