Le Tour Stage 2: Post-Stage Thread
Pretty predictable stage today, being a lumpy sprint stage on the race's opening weekend. Some years in the run-in or in the earlier phase of the stage when chasing down a break becomes more urgent, the sprint teams can get a little disorganized, particularly when nobody is sure who the favorite for the sprint is. Teams with lesser chances start looking around at someone who they think should be responsible for pulling. But with Columbia and Cavendish having established such a dominant reputation, when it came time to chase the inevitable break, Saxo Bank just pulled over and Columbia shot right to the front. Crazy finish with riders missing a turn, but the final-final was as predictable as ever. The results:
- Mark Cavendish, Columbia
- Tyler Farrar, Garmin, s.t.
- Romain Feillu, Agritubel, s.t.
- Thor Hushovd, Cervelo, s.t.
- Yukiya Arashiro, Bbox Bouygues, s.t.
- Fabian Cancellara, Saxo Bank
- Alberto Contador, Astana, at 0.18
- Bradley Wiggins, Garmin, at 0.19

Neutralising the finish?
Because of the crash?
"When he accelerates, he's like Superman emerging from the telephone booth!" La Gazzetta journo Paolo Condo talking about Edvald Boasson Hagen.
well yeah, for those that got caught out
its a flat stage…it’s in the last 3k, has to right?

or
this was last KM, so it was definitely neutralized.

So, Cancellara and Cav tied for green right now, right?
Which means Cav will wear it tomorrow, if I’m right.

GC position...
So tony keeps jersey, but cav wears it, correct?
I believe so

Afternoon everyone
If you’re interested, RAI sports are about to half an hour’s summary of today’s Giro Donne TT, which I think is accessible here. It was technically due to start 15 minutes ago, but that’s how Italian time works. I’ve got to go out, but I’m recording it and will post a few screenshots later, when I get round to watching it.
Oh cool, thanks! :)
"When he accelerates, he's like Superman emerging from the telephone booth!" La Gazzetta journo Paolo Condo talking about Edvald Boasson Hagen.
did they show it or did I just miss it?
It was an interminable volleyball match when I went out, the same when I came back in, & now it appears to be some rather pedestrian judo…
They still haven't shown a thing
I’ve got satellite here so I can just leave it recording, and a quick flick through of what was recorded while I was out gives me loads of volleyball plus some sumo-sized judoists (or whatever tne noun for a person who plays judo is). The Mediterranean games are currently taking place and it looks like Italy have got the chance of a medal. I’ll leave it running and let you know if a bike or two appears. Sorry for getting your hopes up.
May tomorrow be a sprint with ALL the sprinters
I’ve been awaiting the showdown darn it

Official results showing Tony Martin ahead of Kreuziger, so he should take white.

Ah, so no neutralising for GC then..
"When he accelerates, he's like Superman emerging from the telephone booth!" La Gazzetta journo Paolo Condo talking about Edvald Boasson Hagen.
Oops, official site has updated to put Martin 8th, not 6th. Kreuziger stays white.
I can't understand why people cheat--Mark Cavendish
They have a +7 gap after Martin
But I think they will change that, I would be surprised if they don’t.

I know what you mean
It’s the same thing for me. Unless I can manage to sneak a TV at the office? Hmmmm….
That was way too easy for Cav
But predictable.
Cav on podium getting green jersey. 35 pts for stage.

green jersey comp just got a lot less interesting

LOL
I reckon Jussi will keep the Jersey until Wednesday, nice!
Does he get VDS points for the jersey?
probably someone in the live thread mentioned this...
but that overhead shot of the finish was just ridiculous – Cavendish riding one of the 5 or 10 fastest guys in the world off his wheel…in the last 100 or 200 metres? i.e. literally riding him out of his slipstream? Fucking ridiculous. It’s like watching Bolt at the Olympics last summer, no one is even close.
amazing bike handling in that last 1.5 k
Sure, a guy went down and others went off course, but I counted at least two major front wheel washouts that got saved—and that’s not mentioning the hip-checking going on.
I guess that’s what happens with a haselbacher-less tour.
Do you remember his attempted lead-out for Ciolek
at the Tour of Cali last year. He just has this incredible kick, and if he times it right he’s unstoppable. But back in Cali Ciolek couldn’t hold his wheel, but then he faded very very quickly at 150 to go.
interesting -
thanks, I didn’t see that.

dont you remember someone named mcewen?
he was doing this without a team like that.
Ah I wish Robbie were here...Napolitano isn't quite the same
"When he accelerates, he's like Superman emerging from the telephone booth!" La Gazzetta journo Paolo Condo talking about Edvald Boasson Hagen.
I agree, McEwen is and was a great sprinter. But I’d suggest that the speed gap (literal, as we saw today) between him and the other sprinters was never as great as the one between Cavendish and everyone else, not to my recollection anyways. Whether that means that Cavendish is faster, or that the competition isn’t quite as good right now, I don’t know, but the guy is unreal.

VDS points for today:
Stage placings (top 5):
1. Mark Cavendish 80
2. Tyler Farrar 50
3. Romain Feillu 35
4. Thor Hushovd 20
5. Yukiya Arashiro 10
Jersey points
Yellow: Cancellara 20
Green: Cavendish 10
Polkadots: Jussi Veikkanen 10
White: Roman Kreuziger 10
I can't understand why people cheat--Mark Cavendish
Sigh. Along with disqualifying Spanish stage races next year, perhaps VDS should award points to 6th place.
But then Ciolek would come in 7th, wouldn’t he?
I can't understand why people cheat--Mark Cavendish
And just 2 live threads?????
What the hell? What did you folks say yesterday to scare off all the new posters?
We told'em you would be here today
Seriously , I put up a third thread with 10 to go to cope with the avalanche at the sprint. It never happened. Perhaps the combined sunday/dayafter /assured Cav-win made people do other things.
the sprint finish was kind of anti-climactic
due to the crash. Otherwise, yeah it’s sunday – not like we’re at work, stuck in front of a computer with nothing better to do than chat on here.
Oh is that it?
I’m just a sexy distraction while you’re at work, eh? You just use me then throw me out when you’re around the wife and kids? Come tomorrow you’ll want to play again?
EPIC(yes correct usage) Wimbledon final slowed things down
and man I’m still shaking but am damn happy.

Great match from Roddick though.
Vamos Alberto!!!
Today was another scorcher so...
Will Milram and Niki Terpstra be adopting the same methods? Love this photo

Ha ha!
For a much better spectacle (for those who like that sort of thing), try and find piccies of the same thing but used by the Dutch women’s field hockey team, like http://www.ad.nl/multimedia/archive/00095/hockeybad_95468a.jpg
I think it was made popular by Paula Radcliffe?
....only predictable because Cavendish is that good!!
I absolutely love how he looks to thank every team mate after the race!! Brilliant!
yep, he's just that good
for it to be less predictable someone is going to have to step up. In the meantime, keep doing your thing Cav.
If only there could be Cavendish versus Greipel versus Petacchi...
Mon coeur appartient à les forçats de la route.
Chris...concerning the Japanese media....
…having both Fumy and Arashiro is already huge news in Japan. J-Sport has a full team covering them both…..even NHK televised an interview with Fumy!!
The big news would be if one of the boys would complete the Tour. No Japanese rider has ever completed the Tour. Fumy is a complete rider and has the best chance of finishing. He won the mountain jersey in the Tour de Sud last month. Gambate Fumi-san!
Pfft
If the Giro doesn’t have any babes in bikinis by the side of the road then the helicopters go out of their way to find some somewhere else.
One down
from Steven de Jongh’s later twitter:
One rider less at dinner tonight ! Jurgen vd Walle has to stay in the hospital for three days. Punctured lung and left collarbone broken
Damn...
He crashed with 130 km to go, that was most certainly not a pleasant ride to the finish.

From here all the best Manneke ! How did you manage to finish ? Showed your not a p#ssy
130km?
ouch! I just assumed that he was in that crash at the finish.
A bit more actually
From CN:s live report:
13:58 CEST
Jurgen Van de Walle (Quick Step), 2008 Belgian Champion, crashed on his left collarbone. Wilfried Peeters gave him a new bike and he continued racing.
3 mins later they had 133,5 km to the finish.

Ok this definitely needs a place in the HTFU hall of fame.
He rode 130 km with a broken collarbone and a punctured lung?!?!?!?
Dude! There’s your usual level of masochism, and then there’s this. Yikes.
That's odd because he's definitely listed as finishing today
162nd place, just ahead of Eisel and Zabriskie
Both CN and letour.fr got him as 162nd on todays stage
And from what I remember, when they showed him he stood up and looked poised to continue.

Bruseghin crashed today
After the stage they took him to a hospital in Marseille to get his left leg X-rayed. They expect him to start tomorrow.
