Around SBN: Ellenberger vs. Sanchez Heats Up, Hughes Talks Retirement

The annual Maratona dles Dolomites took place today, the biggest Italian cyclosportive, described by some as the cycling equivalent of the New York Marathon. And it was won by an Englishman, Jamie Barrow, riding for Merckk Tuttosport.com in a time of 4h.37'56. Now I honestly know nothing about Mr Barrow, but surely an English speaking rider winning such a high profile race deserves a small mention and congratulations on Podium Cafe. Even more if it turns out that he did it while dressed as a marmot.

Most beautiful event I have ever ridden

ummm … Jamie finished some hours ahead of me ;) so he missed the HAIL at the top of Passo Giau (wimp!)

If anyone is interested, I have a post on my personal blog – here

Seconds before the rain/hail I happened to be at the top of a very high pass …. brrrrrr

Great pics, as always

And congratulations, I would have died on the first mountain myself.

Great photos and well done

but what’s the story behind the 20-foot tall dancing cow?

do you mean on my blog?

It was on the top of Col de la Croix de Fer during the DauphinĂ© stage – you can see the “Croix de Fer” on the right – my wife like this photo ;)

The cow (the big one) is named Sorlinette and is the mascot for Saint-Sorlin d’Arves ski station.

Google images gives some great results

on a search for Sorlinette. Let’s see Tourbecco match that.

man I’m usually not that jealous when you post these but this time I really am – I really want to do that ride sometime.

Isn’t this the ride where you have to win some draw to participate?

Anyways I’m going to be there someday, I’ll try to get an old Steve Bauer frame to really represent. ;)

yes you need to "win" the lottery

40% roughly win …. leading to almost 10,000 racers … it was VERY lucky that both me and my friend were picked

honestly …. cycling heaven

Wow...that guy was like the cream of the crop in the U23's back in the 90's...

He was the number one ranked U23 rider in the world in 99. He had a nickname “le Pantani Anglais” because of his climbing abilities. He signed with U.S. Postal but it didn’t work out…He road for Amore & Vita for 4 or 5 years with minimal results. Then he went to OTC Doors in 2006 and then he went off of the map… Hopefully it wasn’t a tainted victory as usually the front of those cyclo-sportives are with the likes of Raimondas Rumsas.

Too bad he never made it farther than this though…

A frozen 'cross ride from this last weekend. As you may be aware we have had siberian conditions here in the UK with a low of -14 degrees centigrade here on saturday morning. It was a beautiful sunny morning so i layered up and set off for a snowy 'cross ride along a roman road. I checked the thermometer when i got back to find it had been -10 throughout the ride! I had a lot of fun though and the views were spectacular.
