In some sense...

…unless you believe LA can truly win in the mountains, this is fine for everyone else with a real GC contender. Let LA go have yellow, beat him later. And he still has to beat Fabu in any case.

Thor is STRONG, but he's never been the fastest man at the line.

He’s put himself in great shape for the Green competition. With yesterday’s crash and today’s split, he’s the only challenger not to lose points. I don’t think Cav is strong enough to win green, even if he does take all the sprint wins. He’s like a Cippo or McEwen, will beat everyone to the finish, but not always to the Green jersey.

isn't he just...

(so why didn’t I pick him for the VDS team? Nearly did…)

by civetta on Jul 6, 2009 12:12 PM EDT up reply actions

This is why people don't like you Cav

He just said “sometimes it’s like a juniors race” Yep, respect…

Ha

Yeah, I’m sure he had a team just like Columbia with him in those days . . .

Now I feel better for not jumping on the Cav-Wagon.

Maybe I’ll start referring to him as: il Ghepardo

well I am full on the Cavendish bandwagon...and have been for awhile.

…best to look at his full quote and not jump to the wrong comnclusion

by steph- on Jul 6, 2009 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions

did he mention in what way?

Bad planning, teammates with conflicting plans, a lot of your competitors getting stuck back a ways? That is, are you sure he was dissing the overall quality of the other riders, or is that an assumption? (This is intended as a legit question—I don’t have the audio / don’t have the context.)

the peloton not coming together...

First words from Mark Cavendish: ‘How we rode, it was incredible. No-one wanted to help Saxo Bank – it was like a Junior race with no-one contributing. Everyone is nervous about the Team Time Trial tomorrow…..What a way to hit it on the other teams……It showed the domination we have……..It was closer than it was yesterday. Thor is one of the best sprinters on the planet, but again Mark Renshaw did everything right again. I went with less than 200m to go, and with the head wind it was going to be a hard finish……today I’m taking the victory for the team. I won that from a small group and that group was made by our team.’

by gadjo on Jul 6, 2009 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah that really doesn't seem objectionable...

…cherry picking quotes is dangerous. That said, THR might have to get used to getting no help on stages like this. If Cav / their leadout train is that unbeatable, people are going to start not helping.

by Ed K on Jul 6, 2009 12:20 PM EDT up reply actions

It was in the sense that no one else wanted to ride

He followed up with “it’s a sprintstage, we should work to keep it together for a sprint”. Meant that pros should ride to win not sit in the back and mope, same theme as yesterdays comments.

by Jens on Jul 6, 2009 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Cancellara was complaining about that too yesterday,

saying only Columbia were willing to help, even when it was a sprint stage

by Bruce Suomi on Jul 6, 2009 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Context

He was talking about peoples reluctance to put riders on the front

by William H on Jul 6, 2009 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions

No problem with the statement given the context

I think he said exactly what GH said. He wasn’t referring to the final sprint as a “junior race”

by ncmussell on Jul 6, 2009 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Cav's alright with me, but man

I would have loved to see Thor take that.

Can we just say...

…how good a wildcard are Skil/Shimano!

Totally impacting the race. Great choice by ASO.

by Ed K on Jul 6, 2009 12:11 PM EDT reply actions

yeah, but today

works from Columbia was amazing. They work to catch the breakaway, and then made the gap!!this guys will burn all in first week…

by semprenaroda on Jul 6, 2009 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions

tis true

but Skil were clever enough to read it & get themselves in there, which I guess is what they’ve come to do…

and the only 2 japanese riders have finished quite nicely so far

If only more teams took this attitude. I have to give it to Columbia for this tactic. Very will played!

by ncmussell on Jul 6, 2009 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions

And it sounds like GH is confirming

that everyone else has decided to make Columbia do the work. Great, except, uh, didn’t really work, did it?

by Sui Juris on Jul 6, 2009 12:13 PM EDT reply actions

Pah, if they benefit from an organized race

why should others do their work for them? Serious respect to them for making it work, but they do lose respect points for both whining and crowing. I’ve been a huge fan of the squadra going back to the Telekom days, but they should take deportment lessons from Zabel.

Hey, if Ursula said Columbia and Saxobank had an agreement

Then either Saxobank misunderstood or Columbia f**ked them over right? Because they well and truly got caught out…

not really

Cance was there and didn’t take a single pull.

His team essentially got a day off, except for Jens!.

This will turn out to have been a mistake for Columbia in the long-run; and not that big a deal in the gc. Armstrong is now around 20 seconds ahead of Contador . . . big deal.

I don't think Alberto will care about the time differences

he can smoke them all on the climbs, i think it’s more he’ll be visiting Caisse to sign the dotted line ;)

Do you folks have ADD or something?

- No agreement between Saxo and Columbia. Why wouyld there ever be one?

-Making Columbia work didn’t pay? What is this a one day race? Let’s see Columbia tomorrow. Let’s see what Columbia do in the mountains. Let’s see what Columbia do on all those sprinters stages next week when they have to keep leading the peloton. They are pissed now? Just wait.

Ah apologies...

A frozen 'cross ride from this last weekend. As you may be aware we have had siberian conditions here in the UK with a low of -14 degrees centigrade here on saturday morning. It was a beautiful sunny morning so i layered up and set off for a snowy 'cross ride along a roman road. I checked the thermometer when i got back to find it had been -10 throughout the ride! I had a lot of fun though and the views were spectacular.
