Tour de France Stage 6: Post-Stage Thread
Demolition derby today, as the peloton met rainy urban roads and the slipping (on paint strips?) began. We are awaiting carnage reports, but one potential victim is Michael Rogers, who looked bad, and Tom Boonen, who looked bruised. On the flipside, when things weren't going haywire, we got to watch David Millar time-trialing to a near solo victory, before a heart-breaking catch on the Montjuic in Barcelona. Beautiful stage, unbelievable crowds, exciting day, capped by a small group of overall contenders and classics-type sprinters battling for the stage. Cavendish could only look on from the back of the group as Hushovd got his first win of this Tour.
- Thor Hushovd, Cervelo Test Team
- Oscar Freire, Rabobank, s.t.
- JJ Rojas Gil, Caisse d'Epargne, s.t.
- Gerald Ciolek, Milram, s.t.
- Franco Pellizotti, Liquigas, s.t.
No major GC changes:
- Fabian Cancellara, Saxo Bank
- Lance Armstrong, Astana, at 0.00.22
- Alberto Contador, Astana, at 0.19

My Millar Question.
I loved all his moves, but don’t they need him to help VDV in the mountains tomorrw? Or is that Wiggins and Ryder’s job?
That would mean they don't have enough faith in VDV...
Which would seem silly with how well he has looked so far. I guess we find out tomorrow.
geez, chris, who do you get that keyed up so neatly and posted so fast?
tho, it’s rojas, not lulu in 3rd

Staring at the swim team gets you killed by a gang of dancing ninja men who know how to twirl.
Probably
Swedish ES said that wasn’t in the main group, and that was when they caught Millar. But he also reached the finish all alone.

Boonen's

He should take a lesson or two from Rabobank, the pride of Holland
(Are they still in the race btw?)
michael rogers just finished

Rogers finished the stage
But done as GC guy. Still could ride.
didn't think it was possible, but that white cook makes thor look smaller

Crazy stage, props to Thor!
Thought he was losing it a bit but good performance today, bummed for Freire though

smart riding by thor
cav dominating stage wins, but thor has not left any opportunity to waste!
+100 for fans of cycling
"Race radios in Cat 4?"
Indeed!
Cav is clearly head and shoulders + a bike length ahead of the other sprinters, but Thor knows that it is the POINTS jersey, not the sprinters’ jersey. It is going to be a hell of a competition. I have no idea who is going to win. Cav really has a chance to establish his grinta factor. He’s shown us talent, speed, and the brashness of youth. If the points race toughens up, he has a chance to reveal a deeper strength of character that will go a long way to cementing his stardom.
Brooklyn Chewing Gum: Vlaanderens Mooiste
Yes Always was
because as Chris said, three good finishes are worth more than two wins. So you have to ride hard every chance.
My favorite example of this:
Sean Kelly. He won five TdF stage wins in his career. He also won four green jerseys.
Brooklyn Chewing Gum: Vlaanderens Mooiste
That
is a really enlightening stat. The maillot vert never was and never will be purely a sprinters’ comp.

contesting intermediate sprints now?
With the race so close is it possible to see Thor and Cav contesting the intermediate sprints?
God of Thunder!
Sounds like an amazing stage from the ticker I was following. Can’t wait to watch it tonight after I finish up with this thing that has been getting in the way of le Tour (my job). Millar does deserve red.
Perhaps she preferred the younger Finnish form of Veikkanen to Auge

millar says
lives around there and his emotions took him. Decided to go for it. Rode more with his heart than his head. At the end when he saw the big wide blvd, 5kms of false flat, he knew he couldn’t hold the peloton off – they had all the space to organize.
Fantastic!
Screw the post stage controls, Thor. Have yourself a good time!

Thor can ride the chicken whenever he damn well want to.

riding the chicken was the final scene. It’s the logical conclusion.

Astana chased down millar?
I just caught the replay. It looked like Astana was chasing down millar? Or was that just the finish to keep lance near fabian?
Did columbia not chase today?
They rode in front a lot

Funniest tweet so far today....
@rorymasini Pellizotti the sprinter? Nice 5th place for the man known as Jennifer Grey on Podium Cafe!
That so made me smile this morning :-)
Save Ferris!
There was also a ska band in Socali named Save Ferris for a while. Eh, anyway.
Nice wheelsucking by Thor
Still I’d rather have seen Freire take this. Rabo could use a ray of light.
"Where there’s a will, there’s a way.": Alberto Contador, shortly after waking up from brain surgery.
Oscar Freire
talks in English, complains hesitantly about lack of support (H.264 MPEG4, 512×288, 1:21 min, 9 MB).
yeah
he really seems a bit lost during the sprint, trying to maintain a good position. Instead, Hushovd wait in his back wheel.
All he has to do....
All Alberto needs to do at this time is hang on Lance’s wheel…. let Lance pull him up the mountain and his other team mates run interference, and then when Lance gives him the word…. strike…. pump them hard and fast.
Now that they are entering the mountains lets see who emerges as the Astana leader.
I agree that we will definitely know who the real Astana leader is after this run of steeps, if not tomorrow, definitely within the next 3 days.
Until that happend, though, I’d be surprised to see LA pull Bert up the mountains. The other Astana riders will be tasked to do that. Both LA and AC (and probably LL to a certain extent) will be protected until the true leader emerges. JB would be stupid to NOT hedge his bets in this manner.
The overwhelming favorite to emerge is certainly Bert, but not until LA cracks (if he does), Astana is wide open.
Not so sure...
That the Pyrenees will be decisive for Astana. The gaps between LA and AC may be small, if any. And even assuming one rider or the other gets the upper hand (particularly if it’s Lance) there will still be plenty of time and uphill roads left for that to change.
And one assumes Bruyneel would rather not have either of the two crack this soon. Much better to go to the Alps with 1-2 (or even 2-3) in GC than 1-5 or 1-10.
Seems that I have the same feelings about this as another famous rider....
"If Contador was their leader, they should never have let him down and they should not have cooperated in the break," Hinault said.
Hinault was referring to the break in stage 3 where Lance broke away taking 2 other Astana riders with him to the front pack, and left Alberto to fend for himself…. that to me (and others obviously) spoke volumes as to his reluctance to let Alberto lead.
George (and others) carried and protected Armstrong for years as he worked his magic in the mountains…. without the other people of USPS and Team Discovery he would not have won those Tours.
Sure, it is only a 19 second gap at this point…. but we all know what Lance can do in the mountains…. that could easily turn in to a larger gap tomorrow if he choses to back off his word to help Alberto win.
I will say this…. within the next 3 days the yellow will be on the back on an Astana rider…. question is, whose back ??

Federico Bahamontes on ITV
A bit late with this one.
ITV (UK broadcaster showing the Tour each night) interviewed The Eagle of Toledo. Apparently it was his 81st birthday yesterday, he said he was as happy as when he won the Tour (1959, though most of you probably know this already). Nice to see some respect for past winners.
Good to see Hushovd giving Cavendish something to chew on over the weekend. No-one likes a one-sided contest (Scott bikes and HTC excepted). Or do they?
