Swiss long list for Worlds
Whilst they only qualify to have 3 riders in the road race at the World Championships in Mendrisio based on the rankings, being the hosts means the Swiss can have an extra 3 riders apparently and so their long list of possible entrants has been drawn up. Not that many surprises in terms of the long list, though there was one rider I was surprised not to see on there... They've also named the provisional two for the ITT plus some reserve names
Road race:
Michael Albasini (Team Columnia HTC)
Rubens Bertogliati (Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni)
Patrick Calcagni (Barloworld)
Fabian Cancellara (Team Saxo Bank)
Andreas Dietziker (Voralberg-Corratec)
Thomas Frei (BMC Racing Team)
Mathias Frank (BMC Racing Team)
David Loosli (Lampre-NGC)
Steve Morabito (Astana)
Gregory Rast (Astana)
Florian Stalder (BMC Racing Team)
Oliver Zaugg (Liquigas)
Time Trial:
Fabian Cancellara
Rubens Bertogliati
Reserves for TT:
Mathias Frank
Thomas Frei
Joel Frei (Team Hormann)
Observations:
Surprised not to see Martin Elmiger's name in the list, but then I've not really heard whether he's injured or out of form etc at the moment...
Also, Cancellara has yet to make his mind up about whether he's wanting to do the road race or the ITT, though at the moment he's apparently leaning towards doing the road race.
Final lists have to be decided in a couple of weeks and published on September 14th apparently.

Elmiger recuperating from an operation
Not sure of the details, got it from a google translate of a Polish page on his absence from tour of Poland.
Too bad—I like him and Zaugg as well as Tony.

Thanks for that
That certainly explains things. Last I’d heard of him was ahead of the Tour when he said he wasn’t riding that but aiming for the Vuelta instead as Worlds warm-up.
I agree, it’s a real pity he won’t be there I like him too.
Will be interesting to see which 6 they go with in the end. Some of them are more obvious picks then others obviously, but there are a few options there.

Albasini has been on a good season this year
He does alright in hillier races, I could see him being a leader here. He can climb and has a pretty good kick.
If I just had one more gear, I...

Absolutely
He’s definitely one to keep an eye on in this race. He has had a great year so far and will be hoping he can keep that form. And after falling off his bike and thereby decimating the Swiss team by 50% ahead of the Olympic road race, it’d be nice to see him do well here.
And not forgetting the fact that Mendrisio is literally home for him, so no-one should know those roads better than he does:) Just a pity he rides for Columbia really :)

What's with...
… this bollocks about ‘TT or RR’ for Tony?! The answer is ‘both’, my lad!
I don’t know how I would cope with Tony not showing up for the Worlds TT again…
