Tour of Ireland, Stage 1...LIVE!
The Tour of Ireland has been trimmed down to a mere three days this year (bah to that) but we should still be in for some excitement, with the likes of Astana and Columbia up against various British and Irish teams determined to do well on an international stage. As far as I can tell, there's no live coverage out there. It's available on a highlights/delayed basis on RTE (Ireland), itv Sport (UK), Versus (U.S.), and Eurosport for those who are lucky enough to be able to snuggle down in front of their TVs and watch later (like me, though actually I shall be scrapping for all I'm worth at the Rapha end of summer sale at the time...). There should however be some sort of ticker out there, or at least I hope so, otherwise this thread might be a tad quiet! Go here for the startlist and here for the race map. Individual maps and profiles are linked from this page.
Stage one is a lumpy affair from the Ritz-Carlton in Dublin to Waterford. It could be a chance for a breakaway but I'm not betting against a Cav-fest......

Do we know why it's trimmed to 3 days?
I don’t remember reading why..

Not sure...I probably have read about it but my brain can't recall!

ToI iPhone app is really cool
It’s got ticker updates for every stage, stage profiles, information about Ireland, a Graham Watson gallery, and of course, a Livestrong Dublin Summit area.
Updates from Shane Stokes
on irishcycling.com (which quaintly asks you to refrain from hitting the refresh button too often…) & also in slightly truncated form on twitter.
Latest update is that after various failed breaks Jay Thomson of MTN is about 6 mins ahead after Mt Leinster.
Does it explode if you keep hitting refresh? :)

Yum!

I wonder if their paninis are as fattening as the greasy chicken escalope one I had the other day?!

Think one of the problems with updates
is that there might not be all that much mobile phone connectivity in various bits of rural Ireland. Your iPhone app can’t do a great deal about that…
Lunch sounds like a good idea, i should probably see what i can find while it's quiet at Limousin

73km to go, Thomson has a 2.53 gap, no way he's staying away.

yeah, I liked that.
I saw that a delegation from the Northern Ireland Dept of Culture & Sport was at the race start this am. If they could have a stage or two further north that would be a pretty good way of expanding the race & splitting the cost.
Thomson's lead is over 4 minues again!
Surely Columbia can’t be liking this?!

No idea where they are though, other than past Coppanagh.
Much appreciated.

Astana leading bunch at 3'25. Lavery still 1'45 behind Thomson.
They are after Coppanagh & before Inistigoe… you’ll have to work the distances out yourselves, I fear!
So maybe 45km to go, ish?

Cav not there.
With about 25 k to go the front group is:
Marco Pinotti, Morris Possoni (Columbia HTC), Lance Armstrong, Janez Brajkovic, Haimar Zubeldia (Astana), Stuart O’Grady, Jakob Fuglsang, Karsten Kroon, Matti Breschel, Alexander Kolobnev (Saxo Bank), Philip Deignan, Gabriel Rasch, Daniel Lloyd (Cervélo Test Team), Andrey Grivko, Igor Abakoumov, Denys Kostyuk (ISD – Neri), Russell Downing (Candi TV – Marshall’s Pasta), Mathias Frank, Florian Stalder (BMC Racing Team), Frederik Wilman, Lars Peter Nordhaug (Joker Bianchi) and Steven Kruijswijk (Rabobank).

Less than 20kms to go
"From the waist down, Earl Campbell has the biggest legs I have ever seen on a running back." -John Madden
The gap is increasing – 1`56 now. Some real big hitters in this group. Just one Irish rider – Philip Deignan. Most of the pre-race favourites are here, with very strong representation by Astana and Saxo Bank in particular.
15.03: Inside the final 20 kilometres, and it’s now 2’28 – they are pulling away all the time…this is certainly a very decisive move. If you’ve missed this, we’d suggest your GC chances are gone.

Fifteen kilometres to go to the finish in Waterford. Looking at this group, former stage winner Breschel is certainly one of the quickest, and he’s got plenty of team-mates…can he do it?

I'd hope he'd have a good chance.
As you say, he’s in good form & in the British team’s rather sorry performance in Varese last year he was the only one who really had a bit of a go…
Yep, he did better than anyone else.
He’s a real tough cookie.

Apparently no chance of his going to Mendrisio whatsoever
according to Phil Griffiths quoted by the comic. I’m not sure I’m keen on how entangled he thinks the Worlds squad is with recruitment for Team Sky, but maybe that’s just how he’s seeing it. Don’t think so, somehow, though.
Yes, I just saw that. Bummer.
I watched the highlights earlier and he was awesome. That was some sprint! I really believe he deserves a spot with Sky, and if not there I hope he gets his chance somewhere else. He’s had a really raw deal IMHO.

Totally agree
though since he’s yet another rider from my neck of the woods I’m a bit biased in his favour. ;-) But it seems like BC’s long-term worlds team-building plans just don’t include him. I’m afraid that with both Team Sky & BC (currently much too similar to each other to be really fair?), if you ain’t part of the gang, you ain’t part of the gang. Another reason why, although you probably wouldn’t wish *Lotto on anyone, I really hope Adam Blythe makes it.
+1 on Adam Blythe.
It takes guts to go your own way…good on him. Talented kid.
