Johan Bruyneel has H1N1 vius

Back from the Tour of Ireland, the American rider Craig Lewis (Team Columbia-HTC) and the Belgian manager of Team Astana Johan Bruyneel have contracted the virus.

Star-divide

All indications are that both men have been affected by the virus in Ireland. Craig Lewis felt the first symptoms of the pandemic as it was back home in South Carolina. For its part, the famous manager, winner of nine Tours de France through Lance Armstrong and Alberto Contador, has been hospitalized in Marbella, Spain.

Just got back home in Madrid. Had to stay 2 days in hospital after fever attack but all is good again. Just gonna have to rest a bit more.

What? No jokes about "the hog" and swine flu?

Actually, I hate to think of how easy it is to spread the flu around the peloton in a race situation. I hope nobody else comes down with the flu and quick recovery to Craig and Johan.

but it’s ended up being like any other flu here

Exactly

Check out the 1918 flu pandemic. Also an H1N1 variant.

makes me wonder if we should try to catch it the first time 'round.

Like they used to do with chicken pox, in the pre vaccine days. Pack all the kids together with the sick kid.

Chicken Pox

rarely kills. This particular flu has shown to be more deadly than usual to 4-20 year olds. Not usually a high-risk group.

by johnw on Aug 28, 2009 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Twice as deadly

Which is still pretty harmless. At least for people who have the time and necessary equipment to frequent this site.

I actually knew someone who died after contracting chicken pox.

If you aren’t a kid, getting it is really not a good thing.

Like any other flu, BUT

Has killed over 20 people in Aust, and over 70 people in intensive care at the moment….

It's dangerous if you have underlying health problems or are very old/very young, for sure.

Lots of people who get it are really not that ill though, at least no more so than with a bad cold. If it mutates it could be a different matter….time will tell.

actually, this strain is affecting a different target than most influenzas: the young healthy children/young adults from infant to 20, and pregnant women....

I meant more in terms of who is most liable to get seriously ill after catching it

Regular flu kills thousands of people each year

but you don’t hear about that from the media because it’s not a “spectacular” story, at least the American media.

how does that compare to the numbers for the regular, seasonal 'flu?

and yes, mortality rate for chicken pox = 0.0014%. I wasn’t suggesting doing it with small kids. In fact, I was kinda facetious in the first place. But if you’re worried about a more extreme version, and worried that it is going to hit before there’s enough vaccine, then catching the mildest verson you can find might be rational. Assuming you’re an adult, in good health, who can isolate yourself for the duration.

High Geek Alert

Really great write-up on H1N1. And it offers some insight as to why the medical community is so concerned.

A frozen 'cross ride from this last weekend. As you may be aware we have had siberian conditions here in the UK with a low of -14 degrees centigrade here on saturday morning. It was a beautiful sunny morning so i layered up and set off for a snowy 'cross ride along a roman road. I checked the thermometer when i got back to find it had been -10 throughout the ride! I had a lot of fun though and the views were spectacular.
