Contador to stay at Astana...

Just saw this new article on marca, saying that he can't move to a new team...aaaggghhh!

link here.

looks like he's prepared to see out his current contract with Astana and then move to Alonso's new team in 2011. At least that's what google translate is telling me:

he is resigned to remain connected to his current team....Assemble a team with Alonso is something to be done well in advance....

…again spoke about his relationship with Armstrong….as usual…very interesting…not so sure the Alonso move in 2011 is a sure thing as he states he will wait to see what will happen – LINK

yeah I saw that LA thing as well

just don’t want to mention it! getting old real quick….

you may be tired of the discussion but....

…obviously Contador is not….and it was very much a big part of the article…having a full team support him at the Tour.

Questions

1) Who will also be on Astana?

2) How will ASO deal with Astana/Vino?

3) Will Contador wind up riding the Vuelta and maybe Giro again if Astana is booted from the Tour?

by ursula on Aug 31, 2009 12:06 PM EDT reply actions

They didn't make a fuss at all about Vino in the Vuelta

so I think they are resigned to let him ride.

I assumed he would never ride it again but the new reign at ASO seem more “liberal”.

by Jens on Aug 31, 2009 12:09 PM EDT up reply actions

that was worked out under the old leadership at ASO I think

Bassos non-Tour announcement came almost same time he signed with LIQ so I assume it was pre-arranged.

by Jens on Aug 31, 2009 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions

yep

Hmm, thinking you’re right that this won’t be a problem. But we’ll see.

by Jen See on Aug 31, 2009 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

1) his entourage I presume. others? no idea at all.

2) your guess is as good as mine.
3) errr….

although, Bert today is not Bert 2007 or Feb 2008, ASO do want the best stage racer in their race, no?

Prediction: Vino will be fine racing for Alberto

Poor sod

Will just have to make the best of 2010 and focus on happier days in 2011. Mind you he can still win the Tour on Astana but it will be harder on his nerves.

That said...

…even with Vino and other nonsense, at least he’ll be in a position to say it’s his team, full stop, when he’s racing.

You think so.

I would bet more than a nickle that if Vino takes 10 seconds out of AC in the opening Time Trial and looks like one of the strong men on the climbs that Max, Assan and the Kazak Federation would be pulling almost equally for Vino, just in case …. as a backup plan. Possible ?

I'd agree it's possible.

But I just don’t think it will deliver the stress level of this year.

Will be interesting to see him on a non Trek bike

This should be very interesting as he wont have much help on Astana once things are all squared away I feel like.

He was shocked! Shocked I tell you, to learn that Rasmussen was fibbing on his whereabouts

Never could he imagine Ras being up to no-good doping nastyness. As I am sure he has complete faith in Vino’s cleanliness.

This rep thing is what I’d be most worried about if I were Bert. There’s only so much of that which I’d want to run the risk of having rub off on me.

No Contador at World Championships?

“Contador doesn’t picture himself at the World Championships, either. "Probably not, it requires a lot of training for only two days," he said.”

Even more reason for the Schlecks to coast through the Vuelta and focus on Worlds. Andy has to be the heavy favorite now.

I agree Jens...

Contador has yet to show anything in a one-day road race.

Plus…I was actually thinking Sanchez and Valverde for Spain and Pellizoti and Pozzato for Italy ahead of Andy Schleck for Worlds.

by steph- on Aug 31, 2009 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Good course for Sanchez

Pozzato may not get the selection, this time. Ballerini is un-impressed with Pozzato’s current results. Cunego is captain for the Azurri.

by Jen See on Aug 31, 2009 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Pippo won a race some days ago

Giro del Veneto (I remember spotting Sella’s name in results, almost threw up) and I saw something about Pippo and Mendrisio. Was that wishful thinking from Pozzato’s side?

Gazzetta'a headline

was Pozzato passes the test but Ballerini was as non-committal as ever, saying only “I’m a fan of his” (yeah, so?). So Pozzato, it seems, is coming to the Tour of Britain (“a great alternative to the Vuelta”; yes, Pippo) in a last-ditch attempt to get selected alla Danilio Di Luca last year. Not that it did him any good. The Gazzetta commenters are as pessimistic as ever about the chances of the Italian Worlds team.

Ah, thanks!

by TheFigurehead on Sep 1, 2009 2:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Pozzato might mess with the unity too, no?

Ballerini’s job got a lot easier when DiLuca was framed. So much polemica avoided. He would have had a divided team by defintion if Danilo was there.

by Jens on Aug 31, 2009 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions

For sure

He had to pick Di Luca after the Giro, but Di Luca would certainly divide the team. Pozzato isn’t at all known as a team player, and Ballerini has been pretty dismissive toward him in recent comments. He is interested in Visconti, it seems.

by Jen See on Aug 31, 2009 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions

yep, I saw that too

What’s Visconti doing next year? Didn’t I see somewhere that ISD was threatening to implode, with Ukrainian/Italian factions etc.?

by civetta on Aug 31, 2009 5:56 PM EDT up reply actions

can't remember what i've seen on visconti

I thought I read something about him transferring, but now I can’t for the life of me remember it. Gah. I do recall seeing something along the lines that ISD may not be long for this world, though.

by Jen See on Aug 31, 2009 7:11 PM EDT up reply actions

SamSan and Valverde are going all-out at the Vuelta

I doubt they’ll be able to “peak” for Worlds. I could see them pulling it off though. I could also see Pellizoti.

But IMO Schleck has the best chance to win.

Contador’s absence certainly won’t hurt Schleck’s chances, and it might even help.

there are some nasty comments from readers

they are complaining about the “2 GTs is too much” and the above quoted “requires a lot of training”. There is something in the lines of “are you a pro cyclist or a cycletourist?”

which I tend to agree to, btw

but that mental drainage that was the Tour was too much I believe, he isn’t physically tired but mentally done.

I can go either way on the Tour. Leave all of Astana home or put them in and let Bert fight it out with Vino (who will be far far less restrained that Lance ever was).

the team will support him fully, Vino is a cocky bastard but his head can’t be that far up his ass for him to think he can be better than Bert. I’m more interested in seeing Alonso in Ferrari red next year.

I could see it happening.

(i.e. Vinokourov trying to take over team for Tour.) Armstrong was saying all the right things before the Tour as well (well with a few little hiccups), right up to the first few stages. I could definitely see Vinokourov put in a few nice performances next spring, then say “this is a Kazakh team and everyone rides for me” (echoing his comments about Bruyneel), “Contador’s not even going to be on the team next year,” etc etc. Between that and wondering if Astana will have another goofy financial situation, it could be another stressful year for Contador.

Then again, at least Vinokourov has a history of working for others, more so than Armstrong. Nothing against Armstrong, I’m just saying that with a few exceptions a long time ago, he’s always been top dog.

I'm feverished, or the way you want to spell it
