Vuelta Stage 13 Berja - Sierra Nevada.........LIVE
Snowy Mountain.....OK Gesinks, Danielsons and Zeke's of this world. this is your time to do your thing if you want to win.
Day two of the Mother of all Weekends is arguably the one with the best potential for shifts in the GC. Also look for the ones spending too much energy keeping up today, getting slaughtered tomorrow on La Pandera.

You need to get that chip off your shoulder
It’s too embarrassing to list the (winning) reasons why ;)

More climbing? Sans glaciers, still? BAH!
Excuses, excuses :)
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
That's just the thing... I'm not hearing any excuses
for this proliferation of relatively dull scenery on supposed ‘mountain’ stages. There is still a glacier or two in Spain, surely…
It looks like Oz in summer (with castles)
Not many glaciers in TDU either …
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Those are not mountains
Sorry. I’m fussy about my mountains. If we’re doing ‘mountains’ in Europe, I wanna see something a little more impressive than the Great Dividing Range, you know? I wanna see Big Walls. I wanna see Glaciers. Bloody hell, there are more impressive faces in the Blue Mountains that what we’ve been seeing in the Vuelta so far :-(
Does that mean you've been secretly watching?
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
I have no idea what you are talking about.
seems like you are on a sight seeing dvd trip or something…
moi, I watch the cycling! and this is easily the best GT of the year.
I'm just feeling a little geologically deprived at the moment, I guess
Geology is Important to me. Oh, I’ve just had an exciting realisation… I get to see the Great Ocean Road again next year! Weeheeee!
Is this a TDU thing?
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
I'm aware of that :-)
I’ve done many return trips to Portland, via Melbourne, by car. (Now there’s a cold place in Winter. And my relatives lived on top of the cliff there… brrr, that wind cuts through you!)
But GOR is a stone’s throw from Geelong. If I’m in the area, I’m going there :-). You are welcome to join me, if you care to… I’ll even restrict my comments on the scenery to “Ooh pretty”. LOL…
Are there no songs about geology you can listen to?
Like “I am a rock” by Simon & Garfunkel, or “Be gneiss to me” by Todd Rundgren.

Morning!
Have fun with today’s stage. I’m off to the Tour de Carmel. Not quite as challenging as the Tour of Spain, but one does what one can.
I’m hoping I can watch the stage on TV later, but they’ve been pre-empting the Vuelta for high school football. They must assume the 50-100 parents who might feel obliged to watch that outnumber cycling fans in the area. Bah, Comcast!
Throughout the stage all I kept on thinking was: ‘don’t finish second, you can’t finish second again’.--Heinrich Haussler

is that a break from the break?
Same old suspects. These guys are gluttons for punishment

"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
i bet you know the answer to that
Along with every other technical shortcoming, I type like a policeman on an old tv drama ;)
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
although
typing Chinese is much harder.
what’s your excuse I wonder? this is not technical stuff you know…typewriter had been around…..
Typewriters were for girls who weren't going to uni
It was thought to be a ‘lower order skill’. Short sighted eh?
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
ah
I can picture that in my head, rows and rows of girls working with typewriters….
nowadays most people can’t afford to hire somebody to do those thing I’m afraid.
When I first worked as a teacher we had secretaries to type for us
These days, it just takes us longer.. The units i plan for the uni don’t take that long (in my head) to construct, but the computer work. Aargh!
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
like I said
you can’t afford it!
nowadays people who come and fix your computer are called consultants, and they cost a fortune!
ha
I know many women, of a certain age, who cannot type because their mothers refused to let them learn to type, because it was, indeed, seen a lower order skill.
No, not because it was looked down on.
As a woman, if you could type, no matter how skilled or clever you were, you never progressed beyond the typing pool.
Yes, this is the best i can do
and we know that’s not great. Still think voices are important ;)
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
And i also don't do acronyms..
Not true, but VOIP?
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
voice over internet protocol
basically I make phone calls using the internet instead of bloody telstra!
Skype?
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
I'd have thought
that you would have a wireless headset…
And you can't use it when the power goes out
unlike my garden-variety telephone ;-)
Jinx!
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Oooh, so naive...
So, so naive. I could tell you some stories…
is there a 'beast slouching
towards Bethlehem’?
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
errr
you know what, telstra can charge ridiculous rates because people are willing to pay, as demenstrated by Lou here.
that’s not my problem really.
so end of conversation.
Even my phone doesn't work in a
blackout!
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Mobile networks go down
(previous job was with Vodafone. I know whereof I speak. And mobile networks rely on electricity, incidentally…)
basically
what you are saying, is a complete blackout.
I don’t think anything will work.
plus, why do I need the phone then?
Mate, the base stations
Aren’t on their own special grid ;-). The power is either on or it’s off (unless of course there’s a ‘voltage incident’… or perhaps load shedding… ssssh we never shed load! What nonsense! ROFLMAO)
It's too modern, then ;-)
Back to basics, good old plug-into-the-wall model. Stuff that works, y’know
Yes, they do.
I know this from vast experience (my own, and that of others)
What folks use these days
instead of picking up the telephone. Or… heaven forbid!.. calling in for a cuppa.
Cuppa ...tea
Poison. Unless it’s Japanese green I hate it!
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
But calling in for a coffee or beer
and to plunder my books. Now that’s an everyday thing ;)
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
I like the smell
but then i feel like i’m drinking perfume ;)
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
smell and taste are
inextricably linked

Confusing.. I'm trying to help Bruce
TAARAMAE Rein (079), MONCOUTIE David (071), TXURRUKA Amets (009), MOERENHOUT Koos (157), RODRIGUEZ OLIVER Joaquin (058), GARCIA DA PENA David (215), PALOMARES VILLAPLANA Adrian (087), HOOGERLAND Johnny (203) and WEENING Pieter (159) are currently leading the race. RODRIGUEZ OLIVER Joaquin (058) is the best placed rider in the GC, 4.01 down on the leader.
They are being chased by ANTON HERNANDEZ Igor (002), MARTINEZ DE ESTEBAN Egoi (006), RIBLON Christophe (018), TONDO VOLPINI Xavier (021), PIEDRA PEREZ Antonio (026), NAVARRO GARCIA Daniel (036), LOPEZ GARCIA David (056), FLORENCIO CABRE Xavier (063), MOINARD Amaël (077), DE LA FUENTE RASILLA David (103), KESSIAKOFF Fredrik (107), BALLAN Alessandro (122), BENNATI Daniele (132), KREUZIGER Roman (135), GARATE Juan Manuel (153), DE GREEF Francis (163), RUSS Matthias (186), CANCELLARA Fabian (194) and CARRARA Matteo (201), who are 2.10 behind.
The main group is now 7.14 behind the leaders.
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Tony's in the second group...

hey
you are the one jumping in and telling me I live in a blackout zone!
errr, more like we should stay out of technology…..
Yeah, well...
Everywhere is a ‘blackout zone’, I’m afraid. Some places more frequent than others that’s all ;-)
(I’ve had two unplanned outages at my place in 10 years… one was when a car brought down a pole, the other when the transmission network had a bender and we lost the entire Inner West…)
and for that possibility
I should pay telstra some outrageous rates just to talk to somebody?
you do realize I have to make international calls quite regularly, right?
Lord no!
Not suggesting anything of the sort. I would probably jump aboard the ship of progress, if I actually made calls beyond the occasional ‘local’ or 13/1800/1300 one…
Paris-Brussels live now on Sporza & RTBF
Four Dutchmen (Elijzen, Terpstra, Goesinnen & a Vacansoleil rider whose name I missed) & Ukrainian Kondrut in the break, 103 km to go.
Only helicopter shots for now because French police won’t let the motorbikes (or anybody else) through, despite the fact that the riders are still kilometres away from that point.

"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Is there a caption/explanation?
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Mlle. la gendarmette refuses to let the tv motorbikes go past
so they intersperse the helicopter shots with occasional pictures of her, waiting for the riders to arrive at that point on the course.
The break has been out in front for about 130 km
and almost all of it into a headwind. There are some fresh riders in the bunch, probably.

MOERENHOUT Koos (157), WEENING Pieter (159) and MONCOUTIE David (071) are ahead of PALOMARES VILLAPLANA Adrian (087) by 1.14. I was impatiently surfing the internet just now, and debating whether I should go buy a game from a UK site, or wait till it’s released in aussie land?
darn difficult question that….
Indeed
I recently caved in and bought a book from the UK. I’d been hunting for it here for about a year. Two weeks later, a secondhand copy materialised in the bookstore near where I work, $20 cheaper than what I paid…
if it's a book
I wouldn’t think about it twice.
game, err, a bit more complicated….I presume you won’t be interested, so not going into details here.
Nah, I do have a vague understanding
of the politics ;-).
(just a bit prone to tired rambling ATM)
basically
this particular game I’m thinking about, was released late August in Europe & US.
we are looking at late Sep here….
but, wait till you hear this:
it was released Nov 2007 in Japan.

But it worries me when I inadvertently buy a book I own and have already read. You have no idea how much people like pointing that out. ;)

Heh, a while ago
I had cause to sort out my books. I had three copies of ‘Also sprach Zarathustra’… one I’d bought and read in my late teens, one I would have bought while at uni (forgetting that I already owned it)… no idea how the third one came about…
Exactly!
And i hate when a book is republished with a different cover. Trap set just for me ;)

Hmmm... the library is only about 150m away
from my place. Haven’t been there in years!
Not sure that they have an extensive mountaineering section, though… and that’s pretty much all that I am reading these days, for some reason
I'm the fiction queen

Actually it was Bruce who broke the news
I just remarked on the aesthetics of Eros. Sorry Bruce

Slightly surprised
that Tony’s still in Spain… but then The Great Bjarne would probably wish him to stick it out for a bit, considering…
+1
and Stuey with the new baby…

Dani Navarro, virtual leader
The three leaders are facing the 3rd category climb up Blancares. A reminder that NAVARRO GARCIA Daniel (036) is the virtual leader of the Vuelta right now.

See this is where Helsy would give us a spunk quotient
or a pic..

Hoogerland
He’s there again. No wonder Moncoutie escaped the break. Anything to be away from Hoogerland who really scared him on one of the first climby stages.

"If I were World Road Race Champion, I would wear black shorts. That probably has more to do with me being on the wiser side of 30 and understanding better that the decisions I make now never really go away. White shorts would not be something I'd be proud of...." - David Millar, in Rouleur.
5.30 starts will do that;)

No, but I recommend the horns
I use it instead of muscot, it’s much better

Really seems to have put all it’s cards on this one. Moerenhout,. Garate and Weening in the break(s). Gesink is practically obliged to try something on the last climb(s) with this kind of support up the road..
