Rund um die Nürnberger Altstadt - Women's World Cup

Sunday sees the final round of this year's World Cup, with ten laps of a 12.9 km circuit of Nurnberg old town due to settle the duel between Marianne Vos and Emma Johnasson. This race is one for the sprinters, with only one even vaguely tricky looking hill on the circuit, and that's just after the start line and 10k from the end.

Star-divide

The official site is quite good, with a downloadable circuit map and startlist, but Whicki Whizelan and Tiffany Crounwell will show you the problems they have with those tricky Australian names.

The main contest may be between Vos and Johansson, but they aren't being left to themselves. Columbia-HTC has a strong squad supporting Judith Arndt in her umpteenth return from injury this year, including Kate Bates and Emilia Fahlin, Nurnberger Versicherung (the team) bring out their strongest line-up of Charlotte Becker, Trixie Worrack and Amber Neben (currently driving through the night from the French Alps) to say farewell to their old sponsor, and Cervelo have their star sprinter Kirsten Wild, even if the rest of their A team are still in France. Other faces to look out for are Modesta Vzesniaskaite of Bigla, Rochelle Gilmore of Lotto and Aussie Vicki Whitelaw (as she prefers to be known).

The race itself kicks off at 11:45 local, but it is only one part of a day of bicycle based events. And interestingly they seem to have lots of races on the same circuit at the same time, including a two lap race for under 15s starting out five minutes behind the women. No sign of any coverage yet, but I'm sure that something will eventually appear, even if it is just on the local news.

Been searching all afternoon for traces of coverage but it looks bleak.

The startlist is fiction I fear. Ljungskog ended her season due to illness weeks ago and you would expect them to pick up on that.

You could be right

but on the positive side I note that Prosieben are showing Lissi und der wilde Kaiser tomorrow afternoon, and I wouldn’t have noticed if I wasn’t looking for the race coverage.

ah, nurnberger altstadt, lovely place.

And great place for a war crimes trial. Or bike race. Times have changed, yay!

Are you saying

Göring would have won on a hillier parcourse?

Make us proud, Marianne Vos!

She’s said all season that the World Cup has not been a goal of her, she was targeting wins only. So I fully expect her to take the double here!

The local newspaper has

a Twitter account and has also posted a few photos. Nothing of the main race yet, but if you’ve never seen a recumbent race ……

The organisers have the 1-2-3 up

Kirsten Wild (Cervelo)
Rochelle Gilmore (Lotto)
Ina-Yoko Teutenberg (Columbia)

(source)

and add something I don’t understand about Vos, no news on Johnasson. That must mark a pretty good week for Lotto too. Will it inspire Cadel in Spain?

Ah yes

“Wild’s fellow Dutchwoman Marianne Vos could not contest the win on the day, she only finished seventh, however she did secure the overall World Cup thanks to her large lead coming into the closing race of the season.”

It is sad to see that Regina Schleicher retired after the race today.

SHe has been racing since she was 10 though so I think 25 years competitively is outstanding plus a world championship to boot.

There's now a top 20 up

over at Cicloweb, plus the results of the Chrono Champenois (well a top three), a French TT ranked 1.1 on the UCI calendar.
