Vuelta Stage 17 Preview: Ciudad Real - Talavera de la Reina

Stage 17 :: Wednesday September 16, 2009
193.6km :: Ciudad Real - Talavera de la Reina

I'm stuck under a time crunch to do a cell phone invoice cost analysis. All things considered, dead flat transition stages across Spain are more fun than that. No time for screen shots or witty banter... let's just get straight to those who know about these things, shall we?

Star-divide

Hey Gavia... are you aware that the Bird is the Word?

It’s another day for the sprinters on this stage running between Cuidad Real and Talavera de la Reina. There is nary a climb in sight, and indeed, the profile has no categorized climbs on offer. The course heads directly north and finishes just west of Madrid. The riders can almost see the finale of this Vuelta, and there are only four stages left to race.

The Vuelta races through the center of Spain over flat plains. Cuidad Real sits 200 kilometers south of Madrid in the Campo de Calatrava, a flat expanse formed by ancient volcanic activity. Thermal springs dot the area. During the Middle Ages, four kilometers of walls surrounded the city, which has no natural defenses. Only a few sections of the walls remain. Cuidad Real, which served as a provincial capital of La Mancha beginning in the 17th century, is a sister city with College Station, Texas.

Talavera de la Reina lies almost directly north of Cuidad Real. The river Tajo divides the city, which the Celts founded. The first mention of the Talavera de la Reina comes from the Roman writer Livy, who described a battle between the Celtic tribe and the Romans for control of the city. The city shows its mixed history with remnants of Celtic, Roman, and Muslim, and early Christian buildings all surviving. During the 15th and 16th centuries, Talavera de la Reina became famous for its pottery and tile-work, which was exported to wealthy nobility throughout Europe. Though the city itself stands in the flatlands, the Sierra de Mejorada mountain range lies just to the north. And yes, it does rain in the plain in Spain. Talavera de la Reina has wet, rainy winters.

It's nap time in Frinking's Corner. Everyone grab a blankie, cookie and pint of milk.

The biggest ZZZZZZ we had yesterday. This stage is ZZZZZZ, + or - some of the Z's.

Agaian an adventure... to stay awake..

NO categorised climbs at all?! Oh my.

This is going to be a bigger trial than yesterday. If only there was a feed of the Tour of Britain to keep me from going insane…..

They really should give the rest of Europe live coverage of

Tour of Britain, some Asian or Australian and some American race: we could watch cycling all day long.

I’m suddenly hoping there is heaven, lol

But then when would we ride our bikes...

I now have proof I'm having problems--I just got this:

I've had that several times recently...bah

Haven’t noticed any problems before, recently.

OK dudes

….back from the bush, did some tele skiing and rode some mountains, surfed Avoca, fell in love with a hippie chick, my Dad died, I crashed my car, I won two races and grew a great lip-beard.
….but I haven’t seen a computer screen in weeks…wassup!!!
Can anyone give me a brief synopsis of the Vuelta please?
Has Cadel been ‘redeeming’?

errrr....am i supposed to sign this??

by Flatbagger on Sep 16, 2009 6:57 AM EDT reply actions

Aah you're back. The Yappie Aussies missed you..

So did and sorry to hear from your dad. My sympathy..

And the Vuelta?! Booobooo/Gesink is second! Due bad teamtactics Evans lost more than a minute after a flat tire. Valverde first but Samsan coming back. He’s now third and he’s going to attack tomorrow! YEEAAAH

by Frinking on Sep 16, 2009 7:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Dad's death a relief....

…the old buggar was becoming unbreakable and his dementia unbearable.
Rabo bad team tactics….how unusual?? Never New why the United Nations had an office in The Hague
Valverde….thought he was banned!! :-)
SamSan in World Champs winning form u think?
Cattle got a flat!!! Even God hates him!!

errrr....am i supposed to sign this??

by Flatbagger on Sep 16, 2009 7:33 AM EDT up reply actions

But it still sucks.. Or so I think..

And Rabo is doing great. Boom won the stage the day before yesterday! And they were in the right attacks to support Gesink in the last mountain. I think it’s the good DS in there cars..
And Valverde.. BAAAAH..
Samsan is first targetting this Vuelta. He iss just 1 minute down and he’s just getting better in the last week. I’m afraid for Bobo.
And the Evans comment is priceless haha. That was bad tactics btw. Van Greef trode with him but didn’t wait for him..

by Frinking on Sep 16, 2009 7:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Flaaaaatbagger! Maaaate!

(I’m giving you a huge virtual hug here)

Good to see you – the Frinkster isn’t wrong when he says that you’ve been missed. I’m sorry about your Dad. Sounds like you’ve had an ‘interesting’ few weeks… I hope your accident wasn’t too bad? And well done on the wins!

by Lou... on Sep 16, 2009 7:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Only kidding!!

Nah…just tail ended someone big time whilst in la la land!
