World Championships: Women's TT
We have lift off! What we know so far: Van Dijk looks good and commentators chicken out of pronouncing long Basque names. The first group is nearly all underway; top seeded riders start at 16:00 CEST. Enjoy!
I need more words....erm....well, I'm overjoyed as the BBC are showing this on their website, I'm on my lunch hour and the feed actually works in my office. Bliss abounds.
Start list here.

Hi, everybody.
This coverage is just great, the moto cameras and the fixed camera work is fantastic. Thank you universal.
I see K.Armstrong is in the next group. Is there a break in action between the groups, do you know?

How unbelievable is she?
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Is she still that good or is there just a dearth of female french riders
by PopUp Rolen on Sep 23, 2009 10:03 AM EDT up reply actions
You know, I don't think it matters
She’s out there having a go and that’s pretty amazing to me.
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
She's that good...
…though she’s sometimes accused of impeding the development of younger riders because she keeps taking spots that they could be learning in. Not sure about the merits of that argument, but it’s made.
You see how calm Vaughters is? That’s because he’s really one giant seething ball of Evil inside. With like, extra Evil.
They are free to beat her. It's ageist and I'm not even being funny
What a crock. (IMHO)

I tend to agree...
…which is why I expressed skepticism.

It wasn't directed at you sorry
Just a general spray at detractors ;)
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
From what I've read about her...
…she’s still that good. She seems to be pretty crazy about her training, and lifestyle. And I don’t mean that as code for something else.
I don't know enough to comment intelligently on that, but...
let me comment unintelligently about it! :-) I think she’s hooked on it, it makes her happy, and she’s beating women half her age, so that’s got to be great for the ego. IMHO, could be she’s an exercise addict, I know a couple of them and they are unstoppable.
Fourth in the Olympics TT last year?
If I remember that correctly, you’d have to agree she’s still that good.

even when she didn’t have the “isn’t she old” factor too.

General question about women's cycling
In men’s cycling, there are time trial specialists that excel at the discipline, but don’t do much else other than fetch bottles and bring back breaks. Guys like Bert Grabsch and Dave Zabriskie for example. Are there similar specialists in Women’s cycling, or do the lack of races make the best time trialists generally also the best overall riders?
Not quite so simple I think...
There are definitely TT specialists, but many of them are serious threats to win lots of overall titles too. That’s actually not so different from men’s racing, since riding a good TT and being able to climb are pretty much the keys to GC racing. Same for the women from what I’ve seen.
Are there pure Bert Grabsch types? You’d think so, but I can’t think of one. Anyone know? Monty?
You see how calm Vaughters is? That’s because he’s really one giant seething ball of Evil inside. With like, extra Evil.
Thanks for the input. Love watching the women race, just don't know much about riders, racers, etc.

the thought of a female Bert Grabsch makes me smile...
… no, I can’t think of one…
Conversely, there are riders like Vos & Nicole Cooke who probably aren’t terrible TTers but you wouldn’t associate them with it & they ain’t riding this…
Cooke has always struck me as someone who *should* be good at TT
She just seems strong in the way you think of pure TT types being.

Trouble is, if we're all thinking that
then the competition certainly is… curious to see how they play it with Cooke, who’s out of form but likes a fight, Pooley & Lizzie who’s had an excellent end of season too.
I know. Cooke always seems to rise to the occasion but it's hard to know who is number one.
It’s a luxury for us having two such good cards to play, with an excellent young wildcard too. The course should suit Pooley…

Of course everyone knows that Pooley is going for the break
She has to because she can’t sprint. But they knew it in Montreal and they knew it in Plouay and even so she got away. GB’s best hope is that Vos exhausts herself dragging her back, and Nicole Cooke sits behind her all the way.
Only to see Emma Johansson sprint past her ;)

but if it came to a Cooke-Johansson sprint then Emma’s already lost the psychological battle in her head.
