World Championships: Women's TT
We have lift off! What we know so far: Van Dijk looks good and commentators chicken out of pronouncing long Basque names. The first group is nearly all underway; top seeded riders start at 16:00 CEST. Enjoy!
I need more words....erm....well, I'm overjoyed as the BBC are showing this on their website, I'm on my lunch hour and the feed actually works in my office. Bliss abounds.
Start list here.

…though she’s sometimes accused of impeding the development of younger riders because she keeps taking spots that they could be learning in. Not sure about the merits of that argument, but it’s made.

From what I've read about her...
…she’s still that good. She seems to be pretty crazy about her training, and lifestyle. And I don’t mean that as code for something else.

I don't know enough to comment intelligently on that, but...
let me comment unintelligently about it! :-) I think she’s hooked on it, it makes her happy, and she’s beating women half her age, so that’s got to be great for the ego. IMHO, could be she’s an exercise addict, I know a couple of them and they are unstoppable.

General question about women's cycling
In men’s cycling, there are time trial specialists that excel at the discipline, but don’t do much else other than fetch bottles and bring back breaks. Guys like Bert Grabsch and Dave Zabriskie for example. Are there similar specialists in Women’s cycling, or do the lack of races make the best time trialists generally also the best overall riders?
by PopUp Rolen on Sep 23, 2009 10:20 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Not quite so simple I think...
There are definitely TT specialists, but many of them are serious threats to win lots of overall titles too. That’s actually not so different from men’s racing, since riding a good TT and being able to climb are pretty much the keys to GC racing. Same for the women from what I’ve seen.
Are there pure Bert Grabsch types? You’d think so, but I can’t think of one. Anyone know? Monty?

the thought of a female Bert Grabsch makes me smile...
… no, I can’t think of one…
Conversely, there are riders like Vos & Nicole Cooke who probably aren’t terrible TTers but you wouldn’t associate them with it & they ain’t riding this…

Trouble is, if we're all thinking that
then the competition certainly is… curious to see how they play it with Cooke, who’s out of form but likes a fight, Pooley & Lizzie who’s had an excellent end of season too.
by civetta on Sep 23, 2009 10:51 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I know. Cooke always seems to rise to the occasion but it's hard to know who is number one.
It’s a luxury for us having two such good cards to play, with an excellent young wildcard too. The course should suit Pooley…

Of course everyone knows that Pooley is going for the break
She has to because she can’t sprint. But they knew it in Montreal and they knew it in Plouay and even so she got away. GB’s best hope is that Vos exhausts herself dragging her back, and Nicole Cooke sits behind her all the way.
