The Next Wave

Unfortunately I saw almost nothing of the U23 race or time trial this year, thanks to generally hectic times, but if it seems unimportant, here is some information to make you (OK, me) wish we'd watched it.

The U23 races have been run since 1996. [Prior to that there were amateur events of a similar nature.] Excluding last year's results -- give those kids some time -- here are some names from past races:

Winners of the U23 Road Race: Kurt-Asle Arvesen, Ivan Basso, Evgeni Petrov, Yaroslav Popovych, Francesco Chicchi, Kanstantin Siutsou, Dmitriy Graboskyy, Gerald Ciolek, and Peter Velits.

Other Medalists in the U23 Road Race: Oscar Freire, Rinaldo Nocentini, Danilo DiLuca, Luca Paolini, Matti Kessler, Johan Van Summeren, Thomas Dekker, Romain Feillu. Out of 36 placings in 12 years, I find 26 immediately recognizable as top-level pros.

Past U23 Time Trial Winners: Lars Boom, Dominique Cornu, Mikhail Ignatiev, Janez Brajkovic, Markus Fothen, Thomas Vaitkus, Danny Pate, Petrov (the double gold!), Jose Ivan Gutierrez, and Thor Hushovd.

So, with that, say hello to 2009 U23 Road World Champion Romain Sicard and ITT champ Jack Bobridge. Bobridge is known here -- he's signed with Garmin-Slipstream, albeit to concentrate mostly on track for a couple years. Sicard has been racing for Orbea in Spain, and starts his senior circuit career next season with Euskaltel-Euskadi. Yep, he's a climber.

Sicard

I believe he won the Tour de l’Avenir this season. Definitely off to a nice start.

Haven’t watched the U23 race yet.

I haven't been able to find it anywhere

but the extremely excitable French commentary comes highly recommended if you can lay your hands on it.

To me Sicard looks fearsomely strong, & more than that, smart with it.

He would have won Avenir this year by 2.01 if he didn't get a two minute penalty...

This kid is the real deal though…He can time trial very very well ( he won the Avenir time trial) and you can see his climbing skills are evident

most commentators here

suggest serious upper body training abroad before risking wrestling Hinault …. so I’d say yes

The weight of the French and the Basques on his shoulders?

I’d say that’s quite some pressure! But he seems like he has his head screwed on the right way. I’m quite excited about him….the answer to Euskaltel’s prayers? ;-)

Don't characterise him as that. It always disappoints

If only we could refrain from ‘answers to prayers’, ‘next big thing’ impulse, some guys might find their feet more easily ;)

I know...I was being a little cheeky ;-)

But seriously, Euskie have signed some great young talent for next year and I’m so looking forward to seeing how they do!

They'll be fantastic I'm sure

but man the ‘fan’ burden is an extra load going up hills ;)

Sure is, and those fans are pretty darn enthusiastic!

I laughed out loud when I read it. So apt.

You understand we're not talking about Jack Bobridge

because we might jinx him, right?
