Vuelta Etapa 5: Post Stage Thread

Vuelta-post_mediumBunch sprint. Columbia victory. Nothing to see here. Results:

  1. Andre Greipel, Columbia
  2. Tom Boonen, Quick Step, s.t.
  3. Daniele Bennati, Liquigas, s.t.
  4. Tyler Farrar, Garmin-Slipstream, s.t.
  5. William Bonnet, Bweeg, s.t.

Greipel takes the overall lead over his fellow sprinters, in the same order. Obviously none of this matters much, though the points race is taking shape:

  1. Greipel, 78 points
  2. Boonen, 58
  3. Farrar, 47
  4. Jurgen Roelandts, 33
  5. Borut Bozic, 33
  6. Bennati, 31
  7. Freire, 29

We may yet have a Vuelta where the points comp goes to a GC guy, but for now Greipel is doing rather well -- a huge chance for him -- and the usual suspects are kinda hanging around. If somehow Greipel wins the points, does he stay at Columbia? Does he take on a new role? I suppose I shouldn't get ahead of myself... but I bet these thoughts have already crossed his mind. Anyway, hopefully Universal will post the video of today's sprint to Youtube so I can finally see it.

I always thought it was a word we'd appropriated from the Brits. Who knew?

Nope!

"If I were World Road Race Champion, I would wear black shorts. That probably has more to do with me being on the wiser side of 30 and understanding better that the decisions I make now never really go away. White shorts would not be something I'd be proud of...." - David Millar, in Rouleur.

never heard a Brit say that

in fact, first time i’ve heard it. i love the tweets of Aussie riders – it’s like learning a whole new language!

Rasmussen

Won a race today. The second stage of the Vuelta Ciclista Puebla San Marcos in Mexico. He came in solo with a 10 minute lead on the number two. Go Rasmussen!

And the Austrian commission on Kohlgate published the final report yesterday

Guess who owns a share in a blood centrifuge? Well, not that it was a surprise.

If Basso,. Di Luca, Vino and Sella can come back

Why not Rasmussen? He never tested positive. I am not saying he did not cheat but the same can be said about a number of other riders. (someone wants to throw a legfeable reference in here?)

The Dane is completely obsessed with his sport. I admire him for that. And the dude can climb!

But it still hurts..

I know exactly what I was doing when I saw Rasmussen out of the Tour.. That really hurts. And he was an asshole.. Think it’s different because Rasmussen was still in the fight for a Tourwin. Basso didn’t dope, or so he says and was ‘caught’ before, Vino was way of for the Tourwin. And man.. I don’t like Di Luca and Sella.. They may come back but I rather have them elsewhere.. Like Kohl.. That’s for me I think the essentail difference

hmmm

I’m still not completely friends with Mr Basso, either. I kind of feel it’s like a bit of graph paper & we all stick our own particular points on it where we choose or whatever.

For me it doesn’t matter whether Rasmussen doped or not, he still broke the rules & he lied, & as far as I know he’s pretty unremorseful about all of that. He is completely obsessed with his sport & to extent I also think that’s admirable. But also I have a horrible feeling that’s exactly what the problem is.

I still can't believe the number of race wins Columbia keeps racking in.

And I’m still surprised by the number of riders leaving, if Stapleton keeps up this winning streak next year, I’ll be all the more impressed by what they are doing over there in that squad.

Here are the amended ones.

Yay VDS!

Another one for Greipel. But don’t sweat any change of roles for him. Cav he’s not and Vuelta Points Jersey is not Tour Points Jersey.

Just saw the video of the sprint

Looks like Boonen was on a much bigger gear than Greipel. The sprint was slightly uphill. Can this explain greipel win? Or I am totally off here?
