Vuelta Stage 10: Post-Stage Thread

Vuelta-post_mediumIt was always a bit too flat to be a hometown parade for leader Alejandro Valverde, but a four-man escape made hash of the expected sprint, treating the fans to a long-running slalom and eventual sprint, won by Simon Gerrans. Results:

  1. Simon Gerrans, Cervelo
  2. Ryder Hesjedal, Garmin
  3. Jakob Fuglsang, Saxo Bank
  4. Alexandre Vinokourov, Astana

No big change to the overall...

The race thread stopped working altogether for me! Totally clogged.

Phew that Vino didn’t win, bah that Fuglsang didn’t win. Gerrans was always the favourite there i think…chapeau to him.

"Expected sprint"

This is what I’m saying about expected sprint stages at this Vuelta and who’s gonna win the Green jersey in Madrid. Tomorrow’s expected sprint will also probably be won in a breakaway, leaving Greipel with another lost chance. There’s just very very few stages that any sprinter will win from here on. Meanwhile the GC guys will have at least as many chances to win stages with very few able to keep up with them.

Tomorrow is an expected sprint stage?

looks like a perfect break day, two tough climb and a day before those 3 days of hell. Today was never going to be a sprint chance for most sprinters either with that tough climb so late in the stage. The sprinters have 4 more stages, the climbers have 4 more. Stage 18 is a toss-up, probably break day. The climbers are already 40 points down on Greipel, and it’s more likely there will be breaks succeeding on the mountain stages than sprint stages. Plus many of the top sprinters will be out by stage 15, leaving a great chance for Greipel to get some stage wins. The GC guys don’t really care about points jersey, while Greipel has it as a top goal. Coulmbia has nothing else to race for so they will make sure those sprint stages end in sprints, while cdE doesn’t mind a non threatening break succeeding on a mountain day.

It's got to be the entire top six...

One minute is nothing considering the mountain stages coming up.

The top two are always prone to crack. Valverde’s One Bad Day, Evans’s composure. I could still envision Cunego and Mosquera, but they are long shots as tey have to pass six different people.

Gerdemann did crash...He recieved a wheel change after the flat and then about a corner after that he crashed...

Also on the team site:

On the descent of the Alto de la Cresta del Gallo, Linus Gerdemann had his bad luck with a mechanical defect. On the small road, neither a neutral service wagon nor service motorcycle could quickly come to his aid. When Linus Gerdemann finally got a new front wheel from one of the neutral wagons, this repair caused him to crash on the next curve. At that point it was too late for the 26-year-old to have a say in the stage’s outcome.

Question - why did the Everyday boys not bother to chase down the break?

It was only (he says from the comfort of his arm chair) a Cat 2 – and even Cav can get over them. Couldn’t Greipel plus support make it?

As ursula says, its not like there are many chances for a sprint, so if he wants the points jersey he needs to be aggressive…

by addict on Sep 8, 2009 12:00 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, even I was a bit surprised about that

A couple of possible explainations:

Columbia doesn’t seem nearly as focused on helping Greipel as they do Cavendish. Perhaps,

Greipel just can’t climb and/or is not feeling well (doesn’t have it in his legs) or the team just isn’t as focused on Greipel what with seeing Hansen today on the break when he could have been a great help over that last cat 2.

It’s pretty clear that they don’t want to lead the peloton chase unless it’s totally flat. Further clues might come after the next rest day if other Columbiaites abandon the race.

by ursula on Sep 8, 2009 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Si

I think this Vuelta is a harder race for the sprint teams overall than the Tour. The Tour is raced harder, but the flat stages are really flat. Also, these last few days of mountain stages were a bit silly – there were no seven climb death march stages in this year’s Tour. No doubt some of the riders are feeling the heat also, though Southern France was not exactly cool this July ;-)

I was surprised to see them let the break roll, but that final climb was not an easy one by any means. Figured it could go either way, depending on the legs and motivation in the sprint teams.

more important question

why on earth, are you and I still up at this hour?

Was thinking same thing

I’m at least not punching a clock this year, but I think I’m avoiding it being tomorrow. Too many fiddly things to with these programmes. What’s your excuse?

GERROOOOOOOO!

GO YOU GOOD THING!

And well lookie who was 4th :-)

Possibly a good thing that I didn’t see it… I’m not sure how I would have coped…

I like Gerro...

…but seeing Ryder finishing second is painful. I would have loved to see him win; it would have been the first Canadian win in a Grand Tour since 1988.
