If you didn't read the article notice that BMC isn't among the teams that the ASO selected. Perhaps a slight but perhaps not, with TA in Italy at about the same time they will probably race there if invited as Cadel wants to race the Giro this year.

Hm

Ballan has a long history with T-A. That might help explain things. I think Hink said they were planning on it.

If BMC wants to go to the Tour and other ASO races they have to be careful how they deal with the race organizers.

Maybe this is a non issue now but I hadn’t previously considered how they need to be cautious about picking one race over another. They always need to show up with their A game and make sure they are a desirable addition to the big races. It will be easier to get left out of the big races without noticeable results, especially this year with so many viable candidates looking for invites.

He who is, is. He who is not, seeks.

They're already

going to the Tour.

WAIT!

scratch that. They got a wildcard, but are on hold about the Tour. OK, point taken then. Though their chances are still good.

That's Basically..

All PT team + VacansOleil, Saur-Sojasun, Cofidis, Bbox, Skill and CTT. I think. 23 teams..
And Paris Nice is also no Pro Tour?

uh oh

Terpstra and Leenoos aren’t looking like great investments all of a sudden.

Could be worse

Guaranteed an invite to all other ASO races (LBL, PR, Tour etc) according to Milram website

Hm

Did it say guarantee or “guarantee”?

Milram do “quote” Jean-François Pescheux directly making it “on the record” – so hopefully at the Tour et al

Leenooos always does T-A, same for Wegmann

and Ciolek, so Milram has no need to do P-N, I believe they are as stated guaranteed to be in whichever world calender race they choose to race.

Hoogerland and van Hummel on the climbs.

John Lelangue said he wasnt trying to get into P-N

he wanted to field one strong team for Tirreno-Adriacto instead. For such a small team, they do need to prioritize. While I do see how this could be construed as a blunder, i still think their strength should get them in the TDF regardless of them passing up other ASO races.

by agl on Jan 28, 2010 4:19 PM EST reply actions

Cadel has already stated he is going to the Giro to win

to me it’s a sign that A) he knows that’s his best chance to win a GT but also B) BMC knows just to be sure they get a Tour slot they must impress at the Giro. Doing T-A is a better race to warm-up for the Giro, now if they for some reason don’t get into the classics even with a stacked team in both hills and cobbles, then there would be reason to worry. But if Cadel isn’t going to do P-N then I can see the ASO not really being too intrigued in taking them over a French team.

One problem..

The Giro start 4 may.. They have to announce the wildcards 2 may… The numbers can be off by a couple of days.. But you get the message I hope

Not an issue

no way the Giro snubs Cadel Evans, the WC and huge GC challenger. Plus Ballan wants to race the Giro for the first time ever, BMC will be at the Giro.

I think what El Frinkerino means

is that the Tour wildcards will be handed out before the Giro. I have no idea when they are handed out.

by Jens on Jan 29, 2010 2:41 AM EST up reply actions

Tour teams were announced 17th March last year

(week or so after Paris- Nice) and 21st March in 2008. This year – dunno, but probably much the same?

by andrewp on Jan 29, 2010 4:05 AM EST up reply actions

Thanks.. I did..

And Wildcards must be given 45 days before the Tour starts. Or so say the UCI. That means 3 may.. While the Giro start the 8th of may.. Therefore.. Shuffle the GT’s.. First Vuelta, than Giro at last the Tour! Maybe I should my post put back up

Might the ASO accidentally do Cuddles a favour?

Much though Cuddles has impressed over the last year, I still see him as second tier GC in the TdF, behind AC, Schlecklet, possibly Lance, maybe whichever of the liquigas boys has team leadership etc etc.

If the ASO accidentally force him into a Giro / Vuelta schedule, he should be a real strong challenger for both.

by addict on Jan 29, 2010 3:50 AM EST reply actions

I really don't see this

First, if he’s a favorite in the Giro or the Vuelta, he belongs in the mix at the Tour, just to keep the top ten supercompetitive.

Secondly, why would the Tour shut off the nation of Australia this way? They are funded largely by international TV dollars, and if Australia isn’t the US, it’s plenty big enough for the Tour to want people there watching. Cadel in Rainbow… too great a snub. I think you’d lose most of the Australian audience.

What other team’s exclusion could have consequences on this large a scale? Not a fourth Dutch team, that’s for sure.

adding...

Skil? Saur Sojasun? what’s their argument for a Tour invite? Skil shouldn’t be counting on the fact that they got one before. Vacansoleil have thoroughly remade themselves as a Tour team. With French stars, no less.

I'm sorry but

I don’t buy this “remade themselves as a Tour team”. Apart from bringing on the well liked french Feillus, they have what?
A solid b/c list sprinter in Bozic, a possibly over the hill leadout in Ongarato and the most suspect sudden superstar of 2009 in Hoogerland. And Hoogerland has already stated that the Giro is a better target for him as it suits his capabilities.

The only solid Tour-material I see in them is the dutch Grand Depart, which I fear will be enough.

by Jens on Jan 29, 2010 5:01 PM EST up reply actions

And how exactly can BMC make up 2 GT teams?

From what I see BMC has:
01 Evans
02 Frank
03 Frei
04 Ballan
05 Hincapie
06 Moos
07 Santambrogio
08 Morabito
09 Burghardt
10 Schar
11/12/13 Wyss?? Kohler?? Bookwalter?
Serious.. How can yo make 2 GT teams of them..

Apart from the Feillus

This is like a scene from Life of Brian. “Apart from the French Climbing Sensation and his sprinting brother, and an attacking climber/stage-hunter/KOM type, WHAT have Vacansoleil really done for us?”

Blown Skil Shimano out of the water, that’s what.

OTOH

if Hoogie is truly suspect, the deal is off.

But "thouroughly remade"?

The only significant addition to a team that would never be considered for a Tour spot is the Feillus.

And btw , no way can you compare the Feillus to the aqueduct. To the sanitation, yes. The roads? Perhaps.

Well Australia wasn't exactly exploding in last year's Tour...Evans was cleary off form and the only other one was Renshaw

being a key leadout man. They got half a stage win with Haussler. Evans has said he is going to the Giro for classification and we saw what happened to Menchov and Sastre last year after that action-packed Giro. He is choosing to go all out in the Giro and if BMC even starts the Tour (they have snubbed world champions before) there would be no guarantees of him doing anything whatsoever…No offense to the australians who read this.

by Vlaanderen90 on Jan 29, 2010 5:41 PM EST up reply actions

yeah, well

everything is different now, thanks to one remarkable afternoon in Mendrisio. Also, everyone says they’re going all out at the Giro.
