Cyclo-Cross Aigle: Sunday 17th October!
It's the first round of the World Cup - Aigle, in Switzerland... If tgsgirl wasn't gallivanting around somewhere, I'm sure she'd write a succinct and witty article, but all I can manage is CROSS!!!! WORLD CUP!!! SO EXCITING!!! SWITZERLAND? 'CROSS!! 'CROSS!! 'CROOOOOOOOSSSSSS!!
(deep breath. Let's try that one again)
So, the first World Cup round. Here's some info for you: It's the first time in 4 years that Switzerland has hosted a WC round (here's some more background to it), the startlist is here (for if you watch 'Cross like I do, with a window to flick back to, to check who's fallen over/accelerated etc) and you can see the route here (if you flick down here you'll see an aerial view of the course)
But what you really want to know is where and when to watch it, right?
3:00pm CET, 2:00pm BST (9:00am EDT/6am PDT)
BVLS has some good ways to watch - as does Cycling Fans - and I bet you'll all put linkys as you find them, right?
( No coverage of the women's race, but maybe Sporza will show us highlights afterwards?)
Ah.... 'Cross! Happy me!

Sporza will show highlights of the women's race
from 14:45 CEST, in about 35 minutes. Men’s race live 15 minutes later.
Oh sure!
Still, I was a bit disappointed to be able to remember all different bock beers I had, in order, after I came home, haha.
clearly you didn't have enough!
either that, or your inner geek is stronger than the alcohol….

gs wrote a great 'Cross for newbies post
http://www.podiumcafe.com/2010/9/26/1712583/a-cyclocross-education – she taught me everything i know…. except if I was true to my teacher, I should be yelling for Nys, not Styby….

thanks - will check it out.
BTW, my 4 and 7 year old are enraptured in the race too – more so then any road race thus far…

My kids think it's a roller coaster - and just asked what happens if it rains.
I said, they race in the mud.
7 year old: “AWESOME!”

In the old days there used be a 'cross in Wetzikon, Suisse
which was properly mountainous. This course is great, but it is exactly the same as most Belgian courses.
Not much use of natural terrain
find a field and make a course with sticks and “police-tape”
I liked the Namur course
I can never spell it, but I can’t wait for Koksijde…. I guess it’s more of using the local weather systems, usually…

Namur is impressive, up & down the citadel
Comparably, Geraardsbergen has a cross race on part of the Muur.
Oh, spare a thought for Albertina, riding right now
On a strange course, with no one she knows, against the boys…
Good Luck AlberStyNys!
Seems to me
that insisting on grinding through the sandtrap would cost more energy but not gain you much time?
that's what I thought - watching stybar do it...
by JustJoshinYa on Oct 17, 2010 9:24 AM EDT up reply actions
Styby seems to like the sand least of everything
Last week Aernouts was gaining little bits of time every time they hit the sand, when it was the 2 of the duelling

What happened to Nys so he's at the back of the group?
did they just all overtake him on the straight?
creepy - I just did that with Jens above...now you. We're starting to channel each other's thoughts.

Proof 'Cross brings people together?
What number am I thinking of right now?
by Sarah Connolly on Oct 17, 2010 9:28 AM EDT up reply actions
sorry - kids needed a "project" to do. Alas cross didn't hold their attention forever.
Number: 1,465,735

crossed the line +7
but what’s with Albert? Needs to have more races to get into form?

I looked away for a second, and when i looked back, had lost Styby
should’ve known he was at the front! Yay Styby! Turn on that power!
Ha! I was about to say that!
Glad to see FdJ having their ’Cross team, too

The guy limping in the pits
was Arnaud Jouffroy, the French U23 world champion after Sczepaniak was disqualified for doping. He received his rainbow jersey today.
Yes, before the start of the next lap
There is also a new “80% rule” which says that riders may get pulled when the are more than 80% of a lap behind the leader. Stupid rule.
yeah, I saw a guy being lapped by stybar and thought, "hmm, being lapped by a world champ - I could live with that".
Then, I saw him pulled off course.
by JustJoshinYa on Oct 17, 2010 9:58 AM EDT up reply actions
yeah, that seems to be a strange rule. Seems the lapped traffic would move out of the leaders way...
by JustJoshinYa on Oct 17, 2010 9:57 AM EDT up reply actions
Well,
the rule was thought up because sometimes, inadvertently, they don’t. In my view, that’s all in the game and makes for a better spectacle.
I take back my doubts about Albert!
He was just taking his time to warm up!

Styby makes it look SO easy!
great ride!
Mind you, Albert ending up +9 was pretty damn good (unless Styby eased up in the last lap, to enjoy himself)
Ted, fancy doing some interview translating, pretty please?
by Sarah Connolly on Oct 17, 2010 10:05 AM EDT reply actions
i love that cross WC jersey - very cool looking.
English interview – yeah!

(i’m still feeling sorry for Aernouts…. broken chain, was it?)

Have they lost the anthem tape?
Love the announcer asking Styby to sing it while they were waiting!

Albertina is here, late.
Shocking race for me today. Thanks to Styby for making me smile :)
Gora azenarioak!
Thanks for post and links
Just watched my first Euro cross event last night but had to crash before end. Fantastic!
How do you timeshift live streaming??
Didn't see any posts about Compton
She crushed it. Such a huge talent, hats off to her!
If I just had one more gear, I...
