Leontien.nl becomes AA Drinks - the new Dutch superteam!
We've heard about this for a while, but still, it's very exciting. Leontien.nl morphed from the old AA Drinks team, but AA are coming back - and taking the team up a level!
Here's a little news item from the lovely people at Cycling Fever - and isn't this a nice quote?
"The new aspect is that both the men's- and women's teams have received equal contracts for 2011. That's a real breakthrough and unique in women cycling, as their team members can now live the 'full-pro-life'."
and here you can see the announcement made on national tv in the Netherlands (god, the Dutch, so civilised! So forward-thinking! So cycling-crazy!).
Who'll be in the team? Well, welcome back Cervelo's sprint queen Kirsten Wild, GC threat Trixi Worrack, and from the arms of HTC, Worlds ITT bronze medallist, Linda Villumsen. They join Leontien.nl riders Chantal Blaak (who you might remember from her insane amount of work on the front at the Worlds), Monique van de Ree, and recent Podium Cafe interviewee, Marijn de Vries.
They're also very clear that they're aiming to develop riders for the 2012 Olympics... Like the Dutch need any extra help? Dear David Brailsford, see what opportunities you're missing?

Yeah, it's great news :)
Although you’re overrating the cycling craze in Holland a bit, I think… Van Moorsel is a bit of a celebrity due to her Olympic titles, people know the name Marianne Vos, but that’s about it.
The interview also mainly consists of slightly misogynistic questions like “but how fast can women really ride?” Van Moorsel then explains that it’s mostly up to the women to save the Dutch honour at the Worlds and the Olympics, because the men don’t get any medals. Ouch…
heh, relative to the UK, that's amazing!
The only cycling news that gets onto mainstream tv is about doping, and even that at the tailend of a sports report on breakfast news on a slow news day ;-)
That’s very, very funny indeed re Van Moorsel’s comments! Thanks!

Ditto. I mean, what’s a car breakdown and rescue outfit doing involving itself with push bikes? Sooooo funny.
pounding along in three ratios like a sonata
like a Ritter with pommelled scrotum atra cura on the step
Botticelli from the fork down pestling the transmission
tires bleeding voiding zeep the highway
Ha!
Next year will be awesome for puns, what with Movistar, Team de Lux, AA drinks, Virgin, etc etc!

"full-pro-life"
Dang, we’re really hitting the hot button issues, aren’t we? :-P
i keed, i keed… :)
Jens! doesn’t have a shadow because he dropped it repeatedly until it retired, climbing into the CSC team car and claiming a stomach ailment.

That's awesome for the women.
I’ll have A A Drinks to that.

If anyone wants to watch the right bit
it begins about 34 minutes in (although the item immediately preceding it looks like it might be a far more important story on the imminent shortage of Nutella due to some problem that I didn’t understand with the hazlenut harvest. Too many squirrels perhaps) and lasts for 8 or 9 minutes including a film of the team out on their bikes in the new (and incredibly boring) green and blue AA Drinks kit. Not even a hint of pink survived.
