Greatest sporting event ever invented resides in this month.
Before I can rave about the Giro we must focus on the main lead-up to the Italian GT, the Tour de Romandie. Ignore Valverde winning as he was suspended later on and Simon Spilak rewarded the overall title.
The Vuelta Asturias also was raced at this time. Stage 5 was the queen stage to finish the race.
The first big German race of the year was the Rund um den Finanzplatz Eschborn-Frankfurt.
The 4 days of Dunkirk was once again raced over 5 days, Martin Elmiger won.
For the first time in its history the Tour of California was raced in May and alongside the Giro.
Now to the epic Giro. The race began in earnest with a tremendous stage over dirt roads on stage 7.
Stage 11 saw a crazy shake up of the GC as a huge break group got away and gained over 11 minutes on the group of favorites.
With underdog David Arroyo now leader by a few minutes over Ivan Basso it was up to Liquigas to try and drop him. That is exactly what they managed on stage 14.
Stage 15 featured the incredible Monte Zoncolan.
A mountain ITT over the dirt roads of the Plan de Corones was next on the schedule.
Stage 19 was the deciding day as Ivan Basso was finally able to wrestle the pink jersey from Arroyo. The stage featured the mythic mortirolo climb.
The stage to Tonale was uneventful before the race concluded with an ITT into Verona.
The month ended with the Bayern Rundfahrt
and Tour of Belgium
