My gut says the same
he’s free to do as he pleases. He knows he’s not a saint, few of the top cyclists are, its kind of laughable for a guy like him to play it this way; to walk away on top just because you refuse to accept peoples’ changed perception of you from myth to reality.

He said if he is banned
that is not simply changed perceptions. That is being disqualified from competition for two years.

i think he wants to stand in defiance
as a way to show his innocence in a system that tried very hard to screw him over. In this instance, its understandable; it happens also to be my opinion (one I can’t substantiate, yet I have plenty of faith in) that he has has previous indiscretions that he managed to avoid getting purged into the open or proven. It’s because of this that I laugh at what i perceive to be a ‘whoa is me’ stance (again i’m sensationalizing, but when don’t I?)

And I believe the Schlecks have had their past indiscretions(well at least Frank)
speculation should have no impact on a sanction. I understand your opinion but I also understand if he felt wronged by getting suspended for the 50 picograms. The perception of him has already been tarnished for many.

Now that I have had time to think about it more...
I still agree with my gut.
His excuse is looking more and more like fubar every day…which only makes this threat more revealing in my mind.
Off topic
Unless Lurker has an objection, the next shelter dog I adopt will be named LurkerMcLurkerson. Fantabulous name.
On topic, the man is a mess. Is the cause persecution or guilt? I haven’t a clue. Regardless, he’s a mess.
no objections at all.
I’m thinking if I get a cat I’ll call him Icarus.

Dangerous name for a creature that
(presumably) likes to climb…

There are 2 ways - the easy way and the way that I did it.

it's called a griffon/griffin/gryphon (pick your spelling of choice)
"Wizard's first rule. People are stupid. They will believe anything they want to be true or fear to be true." -- Terry Goodkind
Griffin was the name of my first shelter rescue. Best dog evah.
Pit bull mix. Big rouleur. Not so much a climber. She was tranquilo, but with a big, big motor. Loved that dog.
Good riddance.
If he goes I think its puts pressure to get UCI to actually sort doping out (and itself as well first) and sends a message to all the big riders -no one is above a sanction now.
Landis spilled the beans on the protocol ie transfusion + micro dose +lock doors = normal profile in morning. Test @ 2AM!
This is what should have happened post Festina.
Please please have a go at cleaning it up properly.
Yeah, go ahead and dig a deeper hole for yourself, Contador.
Perhaps you need to consider ditching a few of the PR people around you in the process.
Aaah, the old "I'll take my toys and go home"
A classic from sandboxes and playgrounds around the globe. Perfectly suited to a UCI proceeding.
Sorry but
I think Contador is deeply disturbed, depressed, and he deserves fair consideration. I am bothered by all the hateful reactions. I hope he proves to be clean, and I am not going to throw stones. Lighen up people.
Clearly he is disturbed and depressed.
What we don’t know is whether he is disturbed and depressed because he’s being unjustly accused, or because he’s a doper who’s finally being exposed. If the latter, his statement seems calculated and cynical, especially as the UCI has given him very gentle treatment thus far.
Should he get the benefit of the doubt? Well, for now perhaps.
What else can I say? I'm really happy. --Vincenzo Nibali
well
I’m not going there either, given the circumstances, but can’t you see how the prospect of a guy of his stature doping would set off a pretty angry reaction?

I am not suggesting I believe him to be innocent
But I would understand if he truly were innocent and reacted this way (retiring) to a conviction and a two year ban. There are worrying signs regarding the details of the positive and the support he has received from people like Millar and Lemond raises some questions in my mind. The only thing worse to me than the probability that many of cycling’s best performing riders could still be dopers is the possibility that certain teams and individuals could be manipulating or bribing the authorities to escape detection or that the testing protocol and entire system could still be deeply flawed and not catch dopers while implicating innocent riders.
That said, if he did get caught using blood transfusions and microdosing (it was a rest day after all) then I hope he gets the full two years suspension and that the Spanish Federation is unable to help him and gets some serious pressure put on them to stop doing so much to aid dopers.
the support he has received from people like Millar and Lemond raises some questions in my mind
Such as?
The only question LeMond and Millar’s support raises for me is when their comments were made – before or after the blood dopng allegation was made. LeMond’s was def before.

So was Millar's...
…but TBH, the blood doping allegation is by far the sketchiest part of this. I’m incredibly unconvinced by it.
Sounds sort of familiar, actually.
"I don’t want this sport any more. I’m slamming the door and I’m leaving. I will prove I’m not guilty. I want to restore my honour and get the results of this test rescinded. It’s a mistake. I have never doped, that’s not the way I see my profession."

And...
“Two years would be a terrible penalty for me which would force me to retire. There’s talk about Cera but I didn’t take it, also because many athletes have been caught taking it and falling into this trap would have been really stupid….How do I feel? How should I feel? I know what’s awaiting me. But most of all I know that if it’s confirmed this will be the end for me.”

No, but one of them is Italian.

Was the upshot of the promise to retire a return to the peloton? Most of the dopers who have tossed their toys from the pram end up coming back to play some more.

I have no idea what to make of this...
…and i have no sense that it’d be some kind of death knell to the sport or anything. No one rider is that important.
On the other hand, I think the one thing this case makes painfully clear is that we’re very far away from having a process for handling this stuff that isn’t incredibly damaging to the sport and exhausting for everyone involved.
I don't blame Contador
Perhaps he’s innocent and getting blasted wrongfully. He’ll lose a Tour victory, be labelled a doper in the eyes of the public, and his perception will be tarnished no matter how much he wins from here on out. I can totally understand him thinking “well nuts to this, I’m going to take my cash and live off of that until I find a job that’s a wee bit less stressful.”
Perhaps he’s guilty. If he gets popped correctly, then it’s his own fault for doping. However, I wouldn’t blame him for subsequently feeling defeated & hiding the fact that he is a fraud—an exposed fraud at that.
In either scenario, he has to go through an entire two years without competing, and many people will refuse to take him seriously if he does come back. The best he can do is “well, the cheater won again.” In either scenario, the one fact we do know is that he’s most likely in a very dark place, emotionally. I’m not a soul-reader, but he certainly looks like a depressed man. And even if he didn’t look that way, common sense would tell me that he’s seen happier days.
My opinion of Contador remain unaffected by this quote. FWIW, I think he’ll eventually come to his senses and come back to compete again.
Jens! doesn’t have a shadow because he dropped it repeatedly until it retired, climbing into the CSC team car and claiming a stomach ailment.

The best he can do is 'well, the cheater one again
I disagree. I think Ivan Basso and a host of others proved that if you’re a nice guy (which Contador is) and can ride a bike (which he definitely can, dope or not), that you can definitely come back and be applauded, celebrated and loved by fans.

this version of the report
is quite different from L’Equipe…..the interveiw by Manuel Martinez that is.

well
basically he said something like there’s a day or two between they told him there’s a positive and what it was (clen).
it was between that time he thought about quitting.
and at the end of the interview he specifically said he’s calmed down now.
i think it’s the Oct 3 version.
this is easier than rbjhan i hope....
OK, thanks
Yes, that sounds quite different

as i said to Jens earlier
i don’t particularly trust the english version of stories for anything that’s not originated in english.
this is easier than rbjhan i hope....
But the source of the SMH report was't L'Equipe
it was an interview with Telecinco. Who speaks Spanish? This is Telecinco’s report of what he said:
Abandonar el ciclismo profesional
Sobre su futuro, ha sentenciado que si esto no se resolviera “de forma justa”, se plantearía volver a subirse a una bicicleta.
I think this is the video of the actual interview. Can anyone translate?

God I love it when the English press...
…mistranslates the heck out of non-English sources and then overdramatizes them. Our lives would be so much less fun if they stopped doing that.
