Transfer News from the Women's Peloton

We're already on the third post for transfer news from the men, so it's about time we got round to putting up a post to keep track of where the women are going to be riding next year. In mitigation, the news does tend to creep out a lot slower, so I don't think we're that far behind.

A little note on housekeeping and where to find this post. If you look at the top left of the front page of Podium Cafe, you will see a list of sections, running from "2010 Team Previews" down to "Womens Cycling" For the next few days this post will be on the front page and like any other story will slowly be pushed down onto pages 2, 3 etc. Once it drops down a couple of pages or so I will remove it from the front page and then you will only be able to find it under the Women's Cycling section.. That way I can bump it up from time to time keep it on the first page of that section at least without irritating the editors too much. Any really juicy scoops posted will shamelessly be pinched and posted as new stories by themselves, and if you'd rather do the scooping yourself then feel free to stick up your own fanposts/fanshots. This is just a little all in one reference page to tie everything together.

Oh, and they might be Geox next year. Hopefully Safi-Geox. Hopefully their jerseys stay as classy as they are now.

I've loved Team USA this season in Europe

But like Team Aus, there were lots of races they missed, and that’s a shame. Same as Nicole Cooke getting a ride with Team GB – it’s great she’s there, but not the same as being in a team that can ride all season.

PB&Co said when they launched that their aim was to get as many riders as possible over to Europe, because of needing to be riding against the Euros, if they’re wanting to win the Olympics & the Worlds.

It’s SUCH a shame that the Canadian races folded, because the little North American section of the season was great, giving “local” teams the chance to ride against the elite riders, and “local” riders the chance to be seen by the big teams… I do feel for the riders from the USA & S Africa & Aus, having to come so far to get to ride against the biggest depth of competition – but I gues it’s vice versa for other sports

by Sarah Connolly on Oct 7, 2010 9:36 AM EDT up reply actions

PB&Co does ride only US road races...but is quite active with the Team USA

Nikki Cranmer has very close ties with Team USA….and encourages her riders to ride overseas.

If more of HTC's squad are genuinely US based

(and I’m not sure when Amber last properly lived in Europe – her blog is full of stories about flying back and forth) then they may have fewer riders available to do the European circuit. Even this year I think that Ina, Emilia Fahlin and Chloe Hosking spent long periods in the US.

How is Ali Starnes getting on? I remember she had a very nasty injury, wasn’t it a broken pelvis.

They did make some choices that seemed strnge, from a racing PoV this year

But from a sponsorship PoV, made perfect sense. Mind you, it was the same as Cav riding Cali rather than the Giro…

She also rode for Chirio in the Davide Fardelli TT a couple of weeks ago

and Chirio’s been picking up other US riders this year too. I remember seeing that Tayler Wiles (not sure on spelling) came over to ride with the National squad then stayed on a bit longer to ride with Chirio for a couple of races.

I’d love to know what happened with MTN and l’Aude. The rumours weren’t coming from friends of friends, but straight from the team owner, around that time Trine Schmidt stopped tweeting then a couple of weeks later moved to Hitec, and MTn started teh race one rider short.

Angela Hennig

I linked to her personal website above, because she gives an interesting description of how the support she got from the German police force (their equivalent of the Fiamme Azzurre etc.) continued when she decided not to continue cycling. It looks very much to me (via Google translate) that she just had a chat with someone and asked to be transferred to a proper police job.

by Monty. on Oct 6, 2010 4:08 PM EDT reply actions

You were saying that some of the men are "police" too

So, in Italy there’s Fiamme Azzurre & Grupo Forestale (not to mention things like eg Baccaille having a town hall “job” etc). In Belgium there’s the Topsporter military programme, in Germany the Police – are there any other national equivalents? And are they equivalent to British Cycling/AIS?

by Sarah Connolly on Oct 7, 2010 9:41 AM EDT up reply actions

Tony Martin is definitely one

Ludi Henrion gets some support too, but I don’t know if that’s part of a programme. As far as I know the French offer nothing.

A few more little pieces of gossip

Polish Champ Malgorzata Jasinska will be riding for Michela Fanini in 2011. She’s rode just a couple of late season races in Italy, including the Giornata Rosa, and did very well

Rachel Neylan will be riding for Geox, and here’s a nice quote:

Geox team sports director Manel Lacambra said Neylan’s program with the team would be geared towards a peak in next year’s Giro d’Italia.

Cicloweb also have a transfer page up, and they have team MTN down as being non-UCI next year. Has anyone else heard anything about that?

by Monty. on Oct 8, 2010 12:43 PM EDT reply actions

did we know about Manel's move?

And does anyone know anything about the future of Valdarno

They never had a women’s team before this year, but it looked like a few influential people in Italian cycling twisted a few arms and shook down some likely sponsors to put together a team for Tatiana Guderzo’s year in rainbow (no, not wearing the Bungle costume). Now she’s back in civvies, as it were, and Giorgia’s got a team then where does it leave the team? They never had a website, just a facebook page, nor indeed a lead sponsor (Wega seemed to be the biggest name printed across the shirt, and that may just be because it was a shorter word – I’ve no idea what Wega is).

by Monty. on Oct 12, 2010 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Is shee looking to come back to Europe next year?

She seemed to take a while to settle into the pattern of racing here, and I think that she actually had better results doing odd weeks with the national squad last year.

Weird Garvélo stuff

No mention of the Swiss girls

Patricia Schwager and Emilie Aubry, and that roster only looks to be nine, down from fourteen this year.

I don’t think the HTC team is at risk, as that’s where Bob Stapleton first started in cycling management (Deutsche Telekom bought out his company and the contract said he had to be given a job somewhere ……. )

News from a couple of younger riders

I didn’t realise when I first read this story in CN about Pauline Ferrnad Prevot signing for MTB squad LaPierre Bikes that she was likely to concentrate only on MTB in the run-up to the Olympics.

And Rossella Callovi is signing up to join the Gruppo Sportivo Esercito, another of those Italian “job” programmes. That article also mentions that she will be joining a UCI team based in Bolzano, and I have no idea which team that might be. Safi are probably the closest, but they are a lot closer to Venice and in the plain, whereas Bolzano is awfully handy for Stelvio, Gavia, Mortirola etc., so it sounds like the girl might have a plan. A girl a plan a canal Palriga? Doesn’t quite work like that, does it.

And in another episode of the strange implosion of Cervelo, DS Egon Van Kessel has gone to work for Pegasus, so could they be planning a year long campaign? They only need one more rider to hit the UCI minimum of eight. The next Cervelo DS should start checking nearby roofs very carefully for signs of snipers.

EvK going?

I wonder if the Brit trio realised that when they signed for Garvélo?

Of course, I am crossing fingers & toes for a year-round Pegasus (the idea of them riding as Virgin is even more funny than Movistar…. “here come the Virgins, first over the top” etc) – that would be super-awesome, and much as I love AIS, it feels like a better longer-term plan for the riders to have an actual pro team…. better yet, a year-round pro team for the pro riders, and then AIS running teams for select races as well, to enable riders who have real jobs (Lisa Jacobs, full-time lawyer; Ruth Corset, who likes spending family time, for instance) to get to Europe as well. Dear Aussie cycling, you are fabulous, but please please get Pegasus to have a full-time Euro team….

One more retirement

Marta Vilajosana has announced her retirement. “I can’t face another year of that” is a rough summary of her statement.

by Monty. on Oct 13, 2010 12:51 PM EDT reply actions

Another retirement

according to Alberto Rigamonti (a great site for news on women’s cycling from Italy’s voice at the races – not always the first, but certainly the most comprehensive) Loes Markerink of the Bloeit, junior World Champ back in 2003, has decided to retire at just 24.

Claudia Hausler has a few more details on her crash – She can’t remember a thing about what happened until she woke up in the ambulance, but she was unconscious for ten minutes, damaged a blood vessel or two inside her skull which led to bleeding in the brain, and was told to rest for at least three weeks, presumably to let said damaged blood vessels to recover to the point where they can cope with the sort of blood pressures pro-cyclists regularly develop.

All sorts of goodies there

Geox have been on a raid for US riders, which starts to make it hard for Jonathan Vaughters to find two reasonably prominent women for his team. Shelley Evans, Sinead Miller and Amber Rais signed up to ride with Mara Abbott. Is this an attempt to stop homesickness by bringing riders over in a group, or are they planning to ride more US races. Another new signing is Francesca Stefani, a young rider from GS Potentia, the club run by Marina Romoli’s dad, while definitely staying are Olga Zabelinskaya, Inga Cilvinaite, Alona Andruk and Eleonora Patuzzo. They also apparently have their eyes on Nicole Cooke. And just to rebut at least for once those “hard to work with” stories, I saw an interview with Safi manager Maurizio Fabretto earlier this year where he spoke fondly of the time he won the Giro with her, and said that it would be nice to have her back.

For the newly merged Colavita – Forno d’Asolo, Andrea Dvorak and Cath Cheatley are moving over (or riding the US schedule?) while new signings include Barbara Guarischi who’s a promising young sprinter (hint, possible VDS bargain) from Michela Fanini and Austrian Andrea Graus.

Gauss are not going away, even if they have lost their three biggest names from this year. They’ve signed up Luisa Tamanini, Valentina Scandolara and Sylwia Kapusta plus young Susanna Zorzi who, if you watched the Junior Worlds, did a lot of work for Rossella Ratto until thwarted by those pesky hills.

Big changes too at Top Girls Fassa Bortolo, but no news so far of who they’ve signed up. There are still plenty of riders availabe however as it looks like Valdarno are shutting up after just one season. Possibly replacing them in the team rankings are the new squad of Rossella Callovi. Her team manager at Vecchia Fontana, Renato Valle, is looking at taking the entire Elite squad off to create a new UCI team, leaving Fontana as just a junior team.

And in other potentially bad news for up and coming Italian riders, the withdrawal of NGC and Carmiooro from cycling may leave Rossella Ratto searching for a new team again this winter.

by Monty. on Oct 19, 2010 6:12 AM EDT up reply actions

re Geox – I think it’s also Manel Lacambra having a shopping list of American riders that woud fit the American side of the team – they did say they’d ride more USA, as well, and he knows how to do the Euro side….

Geox want Cooke? I can’t see where she’d fit – I’d thought the best bet for her woud be Chirio-Colavita, in terms of teams who have the space & woudn’t have to kick riders out (although… Lotto? Has she ridden for Lotto yet?)

My bet re Garvelo is Alison Starnes, but I can’t think who else

I liked what you said re PB2012 in the other thread (sorry, easier to reply here, as it’s connected) – but I was saying on 606 recently about how they’re between a roc & a hard place. Really & truly, the best way to get success in 2012, which means riding against the best in the world, which means Europe. So what to do? They want a domestic profile, and to bring along young riders, but they either have to get over here for at least some of the season, or rely on Team USA – which was great for 2010, but without Mara, would never be as strong…. I hope they bring riders over for the 2011 season again, but they can’t hope to get close to this year’s fabulosity (I was getting the impression that wunderkind Rivera is, it was a little bit of a shock to the team that there are other Juniors who are as strong/stronger – it felt like they were expecting more of her. Not to dismiss her, or be rude about her, because she is a great talent. But other countries are also developing the youngsters….

My Italian is non-existent, ad googe translate hates me…. what does Cicoweb say about Guderzo? Possible brand new team?

by Sarah Connolly on Oct 19, 2010 7:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Things do look difficult for PB2012

although maybe they were just lucky to get such a strong squad last year on a limited budget, and if they lose Rivera too then there’s not much else left. And I doubt if PB&Co the company can afford to pay for the team to be registered with the UCI and to race in Europe. That’s a lot of peanut butter.

I was trying not to crib all of Cicloweb’s work at once, but the last para says that Valdarno are shutting up, but a new club might come from there. Tatiana Guderzo, Monia Baccaille and Tatiana Antoshina are being waved in front of potential sponsors.

by Monty. on Oct 19, 2010 8:46 AM EDT up reply actions

those are a nice trio

& with 2 of them being part of the double-Worlds-winning squad, & Monia & Tatiana both national champs….

Oh, is there ANY news on the future of Nederlad Bloeit? They’re my truma-team, re sponsorship (I’d say “if that team can’t get £ then no one can” but look at the Nurnberger/Skyter/Noris debacle!)

Starnes wasn't in that Tibco team list, was she

and she seems pretty serene on her blog too. No talk of voodoo pins that I spotted, anyway. But I imagine there’s a difference between recovering enough to do a Gran Fondo and being proper racing fit.

If Nicole does go to Geox then they will be silly strong. Mara and Patuzzo for the mountains, Nicole and Olga for the hills, Shelley as sprinter. And with all these US riders then they will be registered as a US team too (women’s teams have to register in the country they have most riders from – Is Garmin-Cervelo going to be British?).

by Monty. on Oct 19, 2010 8:54 AM EDT up reply actions

a british team!

That would give me a massive laugh, with the “you have to support Sky cos they’re British and so are you” brigade on 606! Ha!

It would be a shame, though, if Olga got relegated a level, because she’s been a huge amount of fun to watch…. I guess if she were unhappy, there is many a team that woud snap her up sharpish, though!

From a little browse around wielerland....

Andrea Bosman leaves Leontien.nl – interesting that it’s implying they’ll be signing some big names, as she’d have to step down a role in the team…. What do we know about SRAM / Eemland?

Tibco have signed 5 new riders: Joelle Numainville, Alison Powers, Carlee Taylor, Erinne Willock and trackie superstar Tara Whitten

This is a weird way to find a team: get wielerland to host a personal ad for you!

oh, and we know Iris Slappendel isn't riding for Garvelo in '11, right?

can’t linky to her blog, as it’s all frames & stuff, but she says it on the news page

by Sarah Connolly on Oct 16, 2010 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions

ah yes

http://www.irisslappendel.nl/nieuws.htm says: “New challenge for 2011, more later.”

It looks like Honda are putting a bit more money into their Aussie team this year

Last winter (well that’s what it is here) I think they only had three riders, now they have at least five: Rochelle Gilmore, Tiffany Cromwell, Josephine Tomic, Peta Mullens and Melissa Hoskins.

Amber Rais

from Kuota to Safi

"I can confirm that there will be other foreign athletes arriving," Fabretto added, "with whom we are finalising contracts. Girls who have race with Safi-Pasta Zara-Manhattan this year who are confirmed are Veronese Eleonora Patuzzo, Russian Olga Zabelinskaya, Lithiuanian Olga Cilvinaite and Ukrainian Alona Andruk."

But where’s Eneritz? I LOVE Eneritz….

by Sarah Connolly on Oct 20, 2010 12:35 PM EDT reply actions

Kirsten Wild to AA Drink

which is also the first official looking confirmation I’ve seen of Leontien.nl becoming AA Drink again. Kirsten apparently wants to ride more on the track and couldn’t do that with Cervelo ‘cos either they don’t make a track bike or ‘cos she didn’t like the one they made. Which sort of makes sense of what Vera Koedooder tweeted the other day about missing her Madison partner. AA Drink have also signed Linda Villumsen from HTC, plus two names I don’t recognise, Marleen Johrend and Eline de Roover. Oh and Trixi Worrack, but we knew that long ago.

by Monty. on Oct 20, 2010 5:31 PM EDT reply actions

is that definite?

sad that leontien-pink will probably disappear….

by Sarah Connolly on Oct 20, 2010 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Should we start a save the ipig campaign

actually I’ve seen a couple of shots of the team van this year and it looks like they never bothered to paint over the old AA drink colours, so we can hope that a little gets left behind sort of accidentally on purpose.

by Monty. on Oct 20, 2010 6:20 PM EDT up reply actions

and the feather boas and pink wigs....

sigh… Leontien.nl didn’t do things by halves….

Shame about the van though – if pink, it would’ve been like a giant Barbie van, very cute….

by Sarah Connolly on Oct 20, 2010 6:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm laughing out loud thinking of it

which is, of course, the best reason to do it! There are riders I can imagine less suited to barbie-pink, but Wild is so red-haired, & sporty!

by Sarah Connolly on Oct 20, 2010 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Villumsen/Worrack as GC riders, Wild for the sprint...

very nice team – although surprised they’re going away from all-Dutch…

Mind you, if Garvelo wouldn’t let Wild sprint, what happens to Armitstead? Or maybe Lizzie A likes their track bikes more, or had a special contractual agreement….

by Sarah Connolly on Oct 20, 2010 5:41 PM EDT up reply actions

She talks about using Koga bikes on the track

maybe the Dutch national team had a contract with them, ’cos like you say Lizzie has been on the track this year. Different contract?

by Monty. on Oct 20, 2010 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I do wonder if it's a bit of an excuse

although while “I loved my time at AA Drink, & really wanted to go back & ride for a Dutch team” is a great argument in my book, maybe there’s also something about teh way the transition to Garvelo was handled?

(damn, I LOVED Lizzie A’s interview, I really hope one day she comes & livechats, I get the feeling she’d be v honest, & awesome)

More on the ESGL-GSD Gestion story

(For earlier stuff see the fanshot here, for what little enlightenment it gives) According to Cyclismag, the three major sponsors of the old team, GSD Gestion, Cyril immobilier and Specialized are getting together with a different cycling club, club d’Ermont Eaubonne Saint-Prix Cycliste, from the Val d’Oise, in order to create a new UCI team running under the name GSD Gestion – 95. There’s no mention yet if this is for 2011 or 2012, but it’s nice to see such pro-active sponsors. I wonder if their web theme tune will be anywhere near as addictive as the old one.

by Monty. on Oct 20, 2010 6:49 PM EDT reply actions

Specialized as in the big bike co?

Won’t they be sponsoring HTC?

Interesting stuff (mutter mutter, bets they still don’t get arond to paying the riders, mutter mutter what are the UCI regs about that? mutter mutter)

by Sarah Connolly on Oct 20, 2010 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess it's that Specialised

Today Cyclismag also have a long interview with Julie Krasniak who talks about the problems of trying to make a living. She is stepping down from top level competition for a while to go to law school, saying that she doesn’t want to still be dependant on her parents, but that it is impossible to make a living. Lapierre dropped her just because she asked for a contract, and she reckons that there are just five women in the world making a living from cycling.

by Monty. on Oct 20, 2010 7:17 PM EDT up reply actions

When it comes to women's pay...

there are no UCI regs. There is a minimum rate of pay for ProTour and Pro Conti teams but not for Conti or women’s UCI teams. I guess it is probably a good thing as the vast majority of women’s teams (and quite a few of the conti teams) wouldn’t be able to survive if they had to pay every girl on the roster even a small amount.

What I would like to see is the UCI take a much more active role in the enforcement of contracts between riders and teams (both women’s and men’s) as they regularly don’t seem to be worth the paper they are written on.

You''ll have to do it

I’m still not sure about ticking that new box that lets me do it. That’s why I’ve not updated anything up top either.

Emma Silversides

writes in her blog that she Is moving from red sun (which has come to an end) to a new team Sengers

by Cotman on Oct 21, 2010 2:36 PM EDT reply actions

I'm glad Emma's still sticking around

I’m a great fan of her and her blog, because if you read between the lines you can see that she must be living on very little money, coming back home to temp in the winter and getting the odd painting commission to top up whatever cycling salary she receives, yet she never complains at all, and has a brilliant “beats working for a living” attitude.

Here's a tease of an article via Alberto Rigamonti

(Excuse the rambling, but it’s a rambly sort of story). Ramon Arrieta was once one of Miguel Indurain’s lieutenants at Banesto, then after retiring he became heavily involved in women’s cycling in Spain, one by marrying super climber Joane Sommarriba and two by becoming a DS at Basque team Bizkaia Durango. For the last couple of years he has also been the official selector of the national women’s team. Now he is moving to become a DS at Eusebio Unzue’s Movistar team. For the moment I suspect that he will work with the men’s team, but is this a hint that they too are starting up a women’s team at some point in the future. It can’t hurt to have such a figure inside the team.

It's not really a transfer story

But Kirsten Armstrong wants to come back to PB2012 and aim for the Olympics. That solves their exodus-of-stars issue!

Plus Cicloweb are publishing really handy weekly updates on transfers – the good news is Gauss looks like it’s still alive!

So, anyone know anything about Nederland Bloeit, or who Garmin-Cervelo are taking on?

A bit of French news from Gwena

Nadia Triquet and Nathalie Jeuland are leaving Vienne Futuroscope, and they have signed up Marion Rousse from what I think is an attached feeder team

by Monty. on Oct 28, 2010 7:15 AM EDT reply actions

For those of you who follow what's going on in the team cars

ex Top Girls Fassa Bortolo-Ghezzi rider Laura Pisaneschi has passed her DS exams.

And one more for the "interesting history" section

Fenixs have signed Marta Bernini who has been posting some pretty decent times on the bike in triathlons and timetrials (that story talks about her winning this year’s European championship TT for amateurs, a category/division that I’m not sure I understand). And if anyone out there wants a bit of motivation to get involved, even if you’re a bit of a late starter, Marta is another addition to the older-than-Ina club.

This is great news!

Lucy Martin to Garvélo!!

Plus huge comedy – Garvélo HAVE to be a Brit-based team now, right??? Love it!

Ooo

and still one place left on the team. Will JV get his prominent US rider this year?

by Monty. on Oct 29, 2010 1:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Bets on who?

I bet Alison Starnes upthread, but I can’t think of anyone else who’s not been spoken for so far…

ps. Dear Garvélo, when will you actally announce these things to us properly, hmmm?
