"Gran La Fawnduh" Postscript
I made a pilgrimage up to Santa Rosa last night to check out the Gran La Fawnduh handmade bike show. It was dark by the time I got there, so no photos worth sharing, but I did manage to get a glimpse of bikes by Steve Rex, Cielo, Black Cat, Rock Lobster, Rebolledo, Bruce Gordon, Sycip, and Soulcraft. Every single bike I saw made me drool more than the last, which might explain why I'm feeling so dehydrated this morning despite my steady, disciplined beer intake. Got to spend a few minutes talking with Steve Rex, Sean Walling (Soulcraft), and Bruce Gordon. Nice guys all around. The next bike in my quiver has got to be a Soulcraft Groundskeeper, which I plan to order as soon as I find a bag of gold buried in my yard (Confidence is high). And yes, I will get it in that nice powder blue color despite the fact that Drew and Sui Juris will make fun of me for riding my wife's bike (they can both suck it).
The highlight, besides the awesome Whiskeydrome, which was open for all comers regardless of IQ/inebriation level, and the other assorted Handcar Regatta creations, was Bruce Gordon's stunning titanium lugged, carbon tube one of a kind concept bike. Full gallery here. It took Bruce, and one other guy, two months, full-time, to make it. The lugs are milled from solid titanium bar stock, the tubes are custom carbon by the Serotta guy (forgot his name, sorry Serotta guy), the brakes are custom, the seatpost is custom, as are the stem, the lights, the racks, the tires... it is an amazing thing to behold. Not wild about the 650b wheels, which look a little goofy (in my unworthy, lame-ass opinion), but that is my only comment that is not glowing. And if you want one, Bruce said he will gladly build you your very own for the low, low price of $45,000. That includes the decals. I plan to order mine when I find an armored car filled with gold buried in my neighbor's yard (Confidence is low).

Confidence or not
this shouldn’t keep you from digging up your neighbour’s yard. Is he a big fella?
That Groundskeeper looks sweet enough though.
The Soulcraft on display
was the owner Sean’s, the “Dirtbomb” model. It’s the one bike you need when you don’t know what bike you need. Better go warm up my shovel.

I can't remember where
but someone posted a video of a guy riding some forrest trails in England on a crossbike. I could totally see that Dirtbomber on a ride like that.
It's like "Otto".
Alice B. Toeclips, (Jacquie Phelon), race bike.

Thumbs up for RockLobster
And Blue is the most righteous color of the spectrum. I would never make fun of your bike – you, on the other hand………
"Suppose you're thinkin' about a plate a shrimp. Suddenly someone'll say, like, plate, or shrimp, or plate a shrimp out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin' for one, either. It's all part of a cosmic unconciousness."
The Rock Lobster tig
welded frame is a pretty good deal. It’s about $1k less than a similar offering from IF.
They used to sponsor a cross team I believe, not sure if they still do.
But IF is IF, so let’s not start with the crazy talk ;-)

That;s more like it

I still cringe
at the price of non-custom steel frames. Especially when it reaches ti prices. It’s a really steep mark up when you consider the cost of the materials and relative ease to work with.
Yes. Until I fall into a pot of Jimbo's gold I'll have to go off the rack.

A guy who just opened up a shop
locally who I really want to see succeed is an IF dealer. I also love steel frames. I could see one in my quiver in couple years.
He does indeed Jens, and it's very pretty

were you at java hut
around 12:30? There was a really nice black IF there.
"It was getting colder and colder as we went up. About halfway up, I started to go a little backwards and as I passed Thor he looked at me and said, "If you lose my wheel I will smash you." I took his wheel and found an extra gear." João Correia
Nope
I rode earlier today and didn’t ride out to Fairfax. And mine isn’t black. It’s shiny steel. But I did ride past all the USA Cycling guys heading out through San Anselmo on their way out. Taylor Phinney was on the front. That kid is frickin huge.

I got my IF, new and unbuilt, for less than the rock lobster :)
The glories of craigslist.
(note: I’ve now had my ‘craigslist find’ and karmically, I won’t be allowed another one for like, 3 turns of the wheel. So I don’t even bother to look anymore.)
My buddy got a Rock Lobster cross bike
in a similar way. He found it at a shop. Whoever ordered it never picked it up and they couldn’t sell it so he got on deep discount. Lucky bastard…
