Three Rainbows: Bastianelli, Cooke, and Guderzo sign with MCipollini-Giordana

Tatiana GuderzoThree world champions will ride for the new women's team, MCipollini-Giordana next season. The news comes today from the good people at Cicloweb.it. Marta Bastianelli, Nicole Cooke, and Tatiana Guderzo will form the core of MCipollini-Giordana, which on paper, promises to be competitive throughout the season's big races. The roster totals eleven riders and includes Rossella Callovi, a former junior world champion, Monica Baccaille, a two-time Italian national champion, Jennifer Hohl, a former Swiss national champion, Marta Tagliaferro, Rossella Gobbo, Samantha Galassi, Elisa Frisoni, and Yulia Blindiuk.

Nicole CookeThe women's field looks increasingly intriguing for next season. The addition of two strong Italian teams, MCipollini-Giordana and Diadora-Pasta Zara, and the strengthening of Dutch teams like Leontien.nl Ladies Team and Nederland Bloeit should offer a challenge to the dominance of HTC-Columbia and Garmin-Cervélo. Spreading out the talent among more teams should make for some exciting racing as the big teams may find it more difficult to control the field. Certainly, it's nice to see a few new sponsors join the sport.

Next step: Getting us live viddy of more of the races

I really want to see this more balanced field go at it. Womens racing is so much fun to watch.

Am I to understand that MCipollini is in fact the Lion King himself?

Is it the best idea for him to be involved with a woman’s team? I’m sensing Berlusconi headlines in the future :-)

seriously

i wouldn’t be surprised if half of the riders test positive during the year. on pregnancy tests that is.

joking aside, good news.

Indeed.

Presumably he will behave, though they will ride his bikes. Ahem.

and

wear kits into whose design he has some input? Does anyone else see this as a bigger deal than the argyle/arc-en-ciel impending disaster?

For me, Flanders. I think it is the single most beautiful day of racing in the year.

It has pictures in it.
Riis rode for Castorama.

adding

the smock concept is actually pretty cool. Way to hook up a sponsor. But the execution… was deserving of a few executions.

orange smocks would be great, and highly visible.

As Mr Wielerland pointed out to me, 4 rainbows

Rossella Callovi = former junior WC

Not that we’re counting, haha!

Oh, dear Dutch & Dutchish readers – any news of Nederland Bloeit sponsorship for ’11?

Plus, does anyone know who Chirio-Colavita are signing for ’11? Assumed it was Cooke, after Neben jumped ship? (well, she was only there for 10 mins, so “jumped ship” possibly is a bit harsh)

Yes

The junior world champion is in the text. But the elite girls get the headline :)

by Jen See on Nov 16, 2010 5:37 PM EST up reply actions

I always forget marta b was actual WC

even though i included her in my WC article, haha!

I was wondering when we'd get news of Cooke and Guderzo

That means that the one big name that we don’t know about yet is Grace Verbeke. It looks like the plan to build a team around Rossella Callovi based on her old teammates at Vecchia Fontana hasn’t yet come to anything.

There's an interesting detail in the last para of that Cicloweb story

Cicloweb spoke to Francesco Pennisi of the Fiamme Azzurre (the Italian military jobs for athletes programme, see passim) and he said “For the Fiamme Azzurre this partnership with MCipollini-Giordana is an important step because for the first time all our athletes will ride on the road for the same team, and this will allow us to track them better and to be able to to study their programmes together with the DSs without having to organise meetings [between lots of parties]. Our primary objective is Olympic qualification, and for that it will be very important to draw up a programme of training and racing that can get the best out of all the girls. From the start this team will be one of the best in the world, but our objectives are spread over many years and the intention is to grow and improve year on year. To be able to ride regularly at a high level, against the strongest and beside a champion like Nicole Cooke will be a great stimulus for Guderzo, Baccaille, Bastianelli, Tagliaferro and even for Frisoni, even if she will continue to be more focussed on the track. This is a project of great importance and we hope that it can last a long time”
