Quiznos Pro Challenge: "Why does Lance hate women's racing?"
The Quiznos Pro Challenge announced their start and finished cities yesterday. As expected, the new stage race race does not include a race for women. Mr. Katie Compton is a bit... perturbed by this development. From the Twit:
Apparently you need balls or a ball to race the Quiznos race Why does Lance hate woman's racing? Women get clubbed like a baby seal again.
Well, then.

the reply was pretty good:
hellboyrulz @MrKatieCompton I think he may be afraid to lose to a woman, not 100% sure, just a theory.
haha!

maybe it's his opinion, not hers

He's Mr. Katie Compton and she's KatieFNCompton...
AFAIK. I also suspect she doesn’t need him to speak for her.

Being supportive is fine.
I just found it a bit weird that he’s using his wife’s name to comment on his wife’s job. I would have rather heard the opinion of Katie Compton.
then follow her
instead of her husband. pretty simple/

Gimmie a break...weird that a non-famous person would call himself "Mr. Famous person". Yeah, that's weird.
ok, I am done.
it's a joke actually
since he gets called Mr Katie Compton at the races all the time and has been for years, he decided to use it for his twitter name.
Maybe
she’s too busy making him a sandwich.

While I understand the frustration
I can also understand why a new sponsor would be hesitant to add a womens event in the first year. They probably would like to see how much they gain/lose from the mens event before making further commitments. The ToC has seemed to have struggles with the finances for the womens event and if there are big events dying in Europe then the likelihood for success in America is probably slim. Saying that I do hope we see a womens race soon.

yep
I totally understand the frustration, too. I just said this over the twit, but Cali lost $1.5 million last year on a budget of $12.5 million. So, it’s not like running a bike race is a super profitable undertaking by any means. It wouldn’t cost a ton to run a women’s race, and you’d like to think the orgs could find a sponsor for it, but it is just one more thing to add to an already complex undertaking.
Still, heh, it looks bad to have these big races, and nothing for the women.
agree
and there must be a way to get a women’s race done cheaper by piggy backing on the men’s race in some fashion.
Even a one day race on a feature stage I would assume would be appreciated. Maybe the day before the men’s to build anticipation (just rainstorming)
moo
Well played...
Also: I’ll fetch my umbrella.
And as for Will’s comment – 100% agree. At the very least a solid one day race on a feature stage would be a great starting point for building a women’s race over the coming years.
Egads, I’ve turned into an optimist.
There are 2 ways - the easy way and the way that I did it.
Lame Mr. Katie Compton
It’s not a question whether anyone wants a women’s race or not, it’s a question of can they afford a women’s race. And until promoters can figure out how to break even on a men’s pro race, i don’t blame them for not hosting a women’s race.
"Thanks again, Floyd Landis, Yellow Jersey Wearer: Nuisance Category"
With that standard, I don't think we'd have any women's racing
Or even much in the way of men’s racing. Adding a women’s race isn’t adding much more in marginal costs.
Since we're on the topic of race organizing costs
Does anyone have a tip on where I could find a public budget on a big/ish bikerace on the interwebs?
Not totally what you looking for
But this may be of interest – auditors report on 2008 ToMissouri. (NB – Opens fine for me in chrome but crashes IE) ToM used to cost about $3.5M before it folded.
I would think adding a women's race is way more than "marginal costs"
i’m assuming one of the major costs is making sure the roads are safe and free of traffic, and the presence that requires. Seems adding another race would require alot more money to keep the roads safe.
"Thanks again, Floyd Landis, Yellow Jersey Wearer: Nuisance Category"
I'd think road closures are the biggest issue
and the traffic delays that persist. I don’t think that the cities/towns would be very thrilled if the organizers came to them and demanded they invest in two invents. Not before any results of how well they will benefit from the main show. If a place like Aspen, who appears to be having some sort of bike festival, steps up and says they would like to have a womens race or criterium then one could talk but I assume they are going to be cautious at first.

Bull Shit
There are plenty of M/F races all over the North America.
This is not a new thing.
Oh, and the preverbial thowing the ladies a bone by offering them a crit and their by making them nothing more then a novel side show is just plan deplorable.
What would Deming do? (+8:00 GMT)
Women get relegated to fucking hour criteriums more than enough in this country...I am sure there are some that are a bit fed up
with traveling over 6 hours to then race an hour long race and leave. It can be the same damn event…example being Nature Valley GP in Minneapolis/St. Paul area. Awesome racing with the female race being run before the men’s race. It isn’t like your shelling out an extra 5 million for women. Hell, they don’t even get in hotels even in the Giro so it isn’t like they are extravagant by any means.
Tommeke!, Tommeke!, Tommeke!, Tommeke!
I assume marginal cost
is used in this meaning. A marginal cost in that sense isn’t necessarily marginal in the sense of being small. In this case I’m not convinced that a women’s race adds more than relatively little to the cost of the race organizers, and not to the host cities either. It depends on how they handle the logistics.

I like her wit
I feel like thats a comment I’d see here. Practically speaking, i think she should be happy that the American cycling scene is expanding in general. That will lead to more opportunities for women later on, it will take more time though. Patience Katie!

If someone responsible for a big international
Women’s team had been involved . . .
Coor’s classic ran a Women’s stage race alongside the men’s event. So, not only can it be done, it has.

Basketball is a little more popular than cycling I think
and the NBA funded women’s basketball and TV coverage for years to try and help increase interest… it didn’t happen. The interest is barely there for cycling in general. Bitch and moan about the way things are, that’s why the Stones wrote a song for your whining ways. Hey, at least cycling hasn’t killed itself yet.

Yeah but the lingerie SB game has boomed!
I agree, finally we get a race back here and now people demand more as if it is some required material to accompany a new race with a womens race. Then you propose at least a criterium and people loose their mind. Not saying it wouldn’t be nice but is seems presumptuous to expect it. I’m still waiting for the womens Vuelta Espana.

Its because that's the mentality for every damn big race, even after the first year.
Comparing woman’s cycling to the WNBA is pretty low, seeing as the WNBA has a maximum salary that is probably 10 times as high as some of the “good” salaries in women’s cycling, which is 10 times more exciting. It might be “bitching and moaning” but gotta fight sexism somehow.

If you think this is an atrocious display of sexism I welcome you to explore some other cultures traditions
and NBA players get paid probably 100 times more than mens cyclists so it is a fair comparison.

"pretty low" ?
My point was about interest in the sport, not about salary differences. The NBA made a huge investment to the WNBA to try to drum up interest. But it can’t be expected for them or anyone to continue funding something where there isn’t enough interest for it to drum up investors and supporters on it’s own.
Do keep “bitching and moaning”, if enough people do then it will be noticed that there’s interest. But I don’t see any reason to call it a fight against sexism.
