Poll: Biggest surprise/upset of the season 2010.
The nominee thread is dead.. So everyone has said his thing. We can continue to picking the winner. The thing/person/team/whatever who will be always remembered as the first Diamant Bang! Yeah.. It shocked me too.. Golden Egg was the second choice but well.. That didn't really do it did it?
Ok.. I or you will talk you through the nominees.. Or you can skip to the poll.. It's down .,I,. there..
First:
Canadian PT races. For a race which is held for the first time it was gold. There was not even a tofield de the WC in Geelong but the races where one of the greatest this season. Not much races can say that.. I hope they stick around for some time..
Mikel Nieve! Second year Pro at Euskaltel and second year he could go unnoticed till the Vuelta. What a work he managed to do for Anton.. A lead out on the mountain where Anton has a stage win. After Anton's crash he didn't panic but tried it the other way.. What began as a chanceless, Frinklish, attack.. 5 minutes behind the breakaway! turned out to be the set up for Nieve's GT stage win.. He almost succeeded to win a second one.. After that a top 10 in Lombardia.. Take that Cancellara.. See you next year Nieve..
Team Luxembourg rises out of Saxo Bank: The once so loving familly at Saxo Bank suddenly bursted. Riis aka Mister Lock couldn't save his Island team. The Schleck's, Voigt and Cancellara are off to Team Luxembourg. Together with some staff members Saxo Bank looks.. Rubbish.. And Luxembourg the best cycling team from the world.
Contador getting busted: Because it hurt..Or so say you..
UCI powerless afford on Valjavec and Pellizotti: Busted and condemned already.. Didn't get the banhammer.. And were on to ride again.. But if it is a real surprise the UCI couldn't seal the case?
Di Luca gets away.. Again!: Condemned 3 times! Penalty time.. < 3 year.. How is that?
Cervelo Test Team + Garmin Transitions sitting in a treee, K I S S I N G. Two team combining was a surprise to me. I Think it says a lot about the Cervelo brand that another team would morph to get their bikes - Flying Dog
Story: Cancellara uses a motor: Somebody so extremely strong he uses a motor is.. well.. strong. This story came from nowhere but, in my eyes, had some feet on the ground. Made the storie even better and well.. Maybe the indictment even more crazier.
Hesjedal's performance in the Tour: Vande Velde, Wiggins, Hesjedal.. You can say much about them but odds 1:10000 they would ever ride top 10 in the Tour. And there they did it. Hesjedal with one of the best shots of the season. Almost surviving the Paris-Roubaix stage in le Tour. What would happened if the guy who caught him.. Didn't had a motor in his bike?!
Riche Porte: Neo who took his chances and rode a great season. Hail to a next.. Australian.. eeh talent rider.
Peter Sagan: Where did he come from?
World in Geelong: The never ending under- and overestimating of a course. The sprinters course ended heavier than expected. Still we had a sprinter as winner but the course was spectacular.. Or so I heard.
Horner proves.. Old is not always buried: Best rider of Radioshack this season. Top 10 in the Tour + winning a Spanish Tour.
Vinokourov relives: Another old man with a succesful season. After his doping ban he already put himself in race mode last year which ended in a victory in Liege - Bastogne - Liege. Well done Mosnieur Voldemort
Daniel Martin: Slowly this boy is becoming one of the greaest. Tre Valle Varesse + Japan Cup + Tour of Poland + 2d in Giro d'Emillia
Cadel Evans The inspiration of the WC stripes lifted him to a whole new level this past season. I hope he rides like that in 2011 - Riv3th3ad And he improves his boxing lessons.. - Frinking
Thor Hushovd shows climbing legs: Crossing the line in front of the yellow jersey group after climbing Col de Peytesourde, Col d'Aspin, Col du Tourmalet, and cole d'Aubisgue on Tour stage 16 - El Ve
Igor Anton: knew he had it in him, but was kinda wondering if he'd ever fulfill on his real potential. Pleasantly amazed what he did in the Ardennes at his first attempt, and then the Vuelta - Albertina
Liquigas. Because they owned the GT's. What a season. One of the most wins..
Peter Velits GT ride: I'm not sure anyone expected him to get third in the Vuelta this year. I was defintely surprised when he won the stage 17. Penafel I.T.T beating mMenchov and Cancellara - Merry Crankster
Menchov podiums Tour I never saw him on the podium of the Tour. My respect for the guy keeps growing. - Chris
Grand/Gratefull/Grantastic/Glorious Heinrich Haussler disappointing season: I though he was going to gear stuff up this year - jsallee00
Cavendish's pre-TdF stage 5 performance: ????????
Chaingate incident: The Tour was lost here. When was the last time a chaingate influenced a race so much? When was the last time a chain was in the picture? (Cancellara RvV and Bettini's attack in Lombardia)
Hutarovich wins big!: Well.. Not just win.. Also beating Cavendish, Farrar and Petacchi in the Vuelta
Landis spilling his guts and the aftermath!: Firstly Landis telling all was a surprise the the whole Jeff and the feds thing pursuing it. - Clubrider
Taylor Phinney to BMC: Lance lost his magic stick. Phinney even left the elderly house.. They bought for money.. and of he is.. The beast knows how to make friends.
Tiago Machado best rookie at RSH
And congratulations to myself.. This was my 100th post.. Ha.. I really hope you like my style.. Else.. it suckse
That was it.. If you got through.. You can vote now.. If you didn't.. Also vote

But what do diamonds have to do with anything?
Riders/things you thought were a gem but blew up in your face?
What has gold to do with football?
Golden shoe? Golden globe?
And a bang.. is always unexpected. Like the winner of this award.. Was also unexpected at the beginning of the season.. Really.. the name is getting more awkward when I have to explain this..
I was thinking Frinkish Diamond.

Sounds like some hip new band.
The Diamant Bang, with their debut album Golden Egg.

This is the typical reaction to the Frinkster's efforts ;-)
At least, until one has mastered Fringlish.
Love ya, Frinking! You know I do :-)

How the hell is Haussler to blame for getting fucked by injuries?
seems a bit ignorant to act as if he was a huge let down when he never had the chance to do well and the few he got he was awesome. Anyway now that I have that rant over I can vote for Richie Porte…who had heard of him before the Giro? Awesome performance at the awesomest race ever.

I'm in for a Blame Poll
As long as Jens gives the winner a bizarro name. Hard to top Diamant Bang. Something like “Reign Adversity” or “Bummer Roast” might work.
Anyway, I blame the United Nations.
Me too

It's an opinion poll no?
I was more surprised at GHH’s lack of results (for whatever reason) than I was about guys I hadn’t heard of doing well. What does blame have to do with anything?
"It was getting colder and colder as we went up. About halfway up, I started to go a little backwards and as I passed Thor he looked at me and said, "If you lose my wheel I will smash you." I took his wheel and found an extra gear." João Correia
I certainly wasn't blaming Porte every time he scored points for my VDS team, but it was a nice surprise.

I just don't see how given the circumstances you can consider it a surprise
if you were to look at a stats sheet without any knowledge of what happened this year then yes but you know what happened. Injuries are fairly unsurprising in cycling. But I have no idea what this post truly is about seeing it is written in Fringlish.

Awesome post, Frinking!
Well worthy of a 100th post.
(I’d have voted for Frinking joining Twitter, but I missed the nominations week.)
"He looked pretty good until he went over the side of that cliff." - thevaro
Was contador a big surprise?
Contador did have a bit of previous connection with Fuentes and the principle “if someones performance is too good to be true it probably is” esp taking on FB in TT’s
"More accurately, the principle of Occam’s Razor recommends selecting the competing hypothesis that makes the fewest new assumptions"
I had to vote for the Canadian PT races
The Montreal race was my first pro bike race that I saw in person, and Ryder kept it tight until the very end. Fun, and exciting, and thrilling.
I voted for Landis
Didn’t think he’d ever admit anything.
It’s a sad thing that the current 1-2 positions are doping related stories… again…
But it was a tour champion. When was the last time that happened?
oh wait four years ago
analysis is speculation in disguise
I think the result was a laydown misere. You could put your efforts into some other fascinating post.
