Volta ao Algarve 2010 Preview

Cardoso_medium

Tuesday begins the biggest international race in Portugal, like the region of Algarve is. A very touristy place, known for its beaches and its sun. This race year after year brings more notorious riders, like Armstrong once, Zulle a decade ago and Petacchi in 2007. With not such a bad weather that we saw sometimes in France at this time, good roads and a good organization, a nice time on the calendar and especially now that Tour de California decided to move to May, we have one of the best pelotons here, i would say that perhaps is the best peloton we’ve in Portugal!

The race has the same format as the previous edition: two flat stages, one hilly and a ITT. The first day should be for the sprinters. Andre Greipel helped by Goss is the favourite, but they have to look for McEwen, Steegmans, Brown and Hushovd, that will do his first debut in the season.

Next day will be much harder for the teams who want to control the race. The riders will have a nice trip in the Serra de Monchique, with very ups and downs in their legs they will be very tired. The lasts 20km are flat and with some wind in the mix. If i’m not mistaken the finish should be in a 100 meters ramp, pretty steep!  Last year Koldo Fernandez won, Cardoso was second and Haussler third. These guys will be there this year too, really if this stage finishes on that ramp, there is no room for Greipel, McEwen... This day can create some surprises, don’t know if the main sprinters can resist, or even a breakaway can succeed!

Third day will be the most difficult, very hilly and should be decided in the final climb. O Alto do Malhão is only 3km, but steep! Last year Antonio Colom won at sprint against Contador, just behind arrived Bruno Pires, Tiago Machado, Blanco. You can see a long resume here.

Saturday should be a quiet stage, GC contenders trying to save energy for time trial, but the sprinters have their last opportunity.

In Sunday and last day, the peloton is back to Barlavento (western region of Algarve) with a 17,2km individual time trial. I saw the route and i used to do many times when trained cycling. Is a beautiful route along the coast with the ocean, often in sight. Is discovered so the wind sometimes is strong and almost flat except two or three steep ramps. The finish is in my hometown, i definitely will be there.

Looking for the teams and riders, Alberto Contador is clearly the favourite. Among his main threats are Leipheimer, Sylvain Chavanel (2nd last year), Sami Sanchez, Luis Leon Sanchez, CVV, Karpets, Tiago Machado, Rui Costa, David Blanco. For Leipheimer win, i think he have to do an outstanding time trial and crush Contador’s tempo. That final climb, is not for Levi, steep and short, like a sprint for puncheurs. So i think Machado can have some liberty here, since last year he finished in 4th. I think José Azevedo will do his fist debut like DS in Radio Shack, so, good luck for him! With LL Sanchez, Sami Sanchez and CVV coming this year, should make the race much more interesting!

Don’t forget riders like Ivanov, Joaquim Rodriguez, Casar, Monfort, Mosquera, Anton, Hesjedal, Bruno Pires or even Hugo Sabido that although the ITT aren’t their strong, could do some surprises especially in that hard stage.

17 Fev – 1ª Etapa: Estádio do Algarve – Albufeira, 157,5 km

18 Fev- 2 ª Etapa: Sagres – Lagos, 207,5 km

19 Fev – 3ª Etapa: Castro Marim – Alto do Malhão, 173,7 km

20 Fev – 4ª Etapa: Cacela – Tavira, 169 km

21 Fev – 5ª Etapa: Lagoa – Portimão, 17,2 km (C/R Ind.)

About the live streams there will not be, only daily summaries that Eurosport will do, and this is already a big step! Tickers will be in this site, and probably in the official site, you can see the altimetry of all stages in the official site too.

Last year Haussler begun his series of victories and great performances here in Algarve with a win in the first and last stage, maybe this year someone can appear here too. Any bets? Weylandt, Leezer, Rojas Gil, or even the forgotten Sebastian Chavanel ?!

Thanks for this. I'm looking forward to it..

Did you intentionally leave out Kloden, who is also a good time triallist too. (I would sill be betting on Contador or Valverde for the win).

not really, just forget him.

Last year he finished in 5th, but the time trial this year is half the km compared with the previous edition. He lost 27sec for Contador in that climb, so i dont really believe that he can win, but probably will do a nice perform.

Valverde isn’t racing here.

Hey Semprenaroda

Do you plan on being in person on any other stage? Would be great to catch a fellow Podium member. I’m staying in Albufeira at the moment and hope to catch the peloton live tomorrow and at the summit of Alto do Malhão, provided I can get a new tube/stitch my old one in the next two days.. well, weather is also a factor with the heavy downpours of the last few days. Anyways, looking forward to hearing from you. Até Já

I'll just be in the time trial in Portimão,

probably in the finish or in the “old bridge” where the riders will pass. I would like to go to the Alto do Malhão, but unfortunately will not be possible. The last time i was there was when Flandis won!

The weather has been a little odd, somedays sunny, others cloudy with downpours.

um grande obrigado, Sempre...

for the awesome VaA preview and also for the one before on the PT season – very helpful for those of us away from home. Sounds like it’s going to be an exciting month (and season) there – wish I were back home (now also Portimão!!) to go watch the pelotão at Marmelete. I’ll try to bring my bike for the Summer vacation, see if I can do the Fóia a couple of times…

AC won't win

He said in his press release that he is there to check his form, but that he does not have the same level as he had in 2009. The first race he intends to contest is Paris Nice.

that’s exactly what he said, one year ago….

Lame attempt at sandbagging...

just a few weeks ago he said he was in better form right now than he was at this time last year.

I don't think that's accurate.

I think he said that he’s training numbers are better than this time last year, but I don’t recall him saying that his form is better. He’s always maintained that he hasn’t been able to train as consistently as he did in 2009 because of the weather in Madrid.

by MambaFan on Feb 16, 2010 2:51 PM EST up reply actions

Sorry for the typos.

He said “his” training numbers are better than this time last year….

by MambaFan on Feb 16, 2010 2:53 PM EST up reply actions

Well aren't training numbers correlated with form?

It isn’t like you can score high training numbers and be in terrible form and unable to compete at the top level.

Yes you can

Look at Mick Rogers for the past 3 years or so.

by tedvdw on Feb 16, 2010 5:19 PM EST up reply actions

I guess I should clarify that it probably also matters what training numbers one is looking at as well

Not sure what numbers/reference with Rogers you are referring to.

"Let’s plunge ourselves into the roar of time, the whirl of accident; may pain and pleasure, success and failure, shift as they will- it’s only action that can make a man" Faust, Goethe

He was always doing fine in lab tests

but he just didn’t produce results on the road. The best simulation of a race is a race.

by tedvdw on Feb 16, 2010 5:40 PM EST up reply actions

Thanks.

I agree that ultimately a race is the best simulation, but you can’t know how competitive you are until you get your baseline and know how that compares to years past. Can’t win if you don’t know how you are doing with your training.

There is an unspoken rule of 6.7watts/kilo to win the Tour.

"Let’s plunge ourselves into the roar of time, the whirl of accident; may pain and pleasure, success and failure, shift as they will- it’s only action that can make a man" Faust, Goethe

by Ahillock on Feb 16, 2010 5:45 PM EST up reply actions

Here are two quotes:

"Let’s plunge ourselves into the roar of time, the whirl of accident; may pain and pleasure, success and failure, shift as they will- it’s only action that can make a man" Faust, Goethe

by Ahillock on Feb 16, 2010 5:54 PM EST up reply actions

One from an article written by Chris Carmicheal by

“Maintaining an efficient power-to-weight ratio is a key concern for athletes during the mountain stages of the Tour de France… To be a true Tour de France contender like Lance Armstrong, you need to produce six to seven watts per kilogram of body weight.”

And another from Dr. Michele Ferrari who is probably the most successful (along with Dr. Luigi Cecchini) irregardless of what you think of their methods/ethics.

Ferrari: “Six point seven. If you are near it, you can win. If not, you cannot.” Quote taken from the book “Lance Armstrong’s War”

"Let’s plunge ourselves into the roar of time, the whirl of accident; may pain and pleasure, success and failure, shift as they will- it’s only action that can make a man" Faust, Goethe

by Ahillock on Feb 16, 2010 5:57 PM EST up reply actions

Sure,

but sometimes it just doesn’t work out that way. Perhaps in the case of Rogers (happened to think of him when trying to come up with counter examples) it’s imperfect test protocols. But it depends on so many factors; think of Danielson.

I have coached elite athletes in rowing and tried all sorts of different test protocols. Mostly they work fine and show progression or even predict performance. Sometimes they don’t.

by tedvdw on Feb 16, 2010 5:59 PM EST up reply actions

For sure.

Ultimately there are other variables to consider: injury, sickness, being nervous, not being at the right spot at the right time for a break away…etc. Race day is different than when training.

But saying that, I think there is a basic level of performance/training numbers/shape….etc. whatever you want to call it that you need to reach before you are truly competitive at the top level. Kinda like showing up to the mens 100m olympic race and having only been able to run 10.2 100m races that year and hoping to magically beat Usain Bolt who runs in the 9.5s-9.7s. At a certain point, you need to meet those benchmarks to really be competitive.

Then the other factors come into play like luck, team support, confidence..etc. So I agree with you part way, but think it is a mix of both.

"Let’s plunge ourselves into the roar of time, the whirl of accident; may pain and pleasure, success and failure, shift as they will- it’s only action that can make a man" Faust, Goethe

by Ahillock on Feb 16, 2010 6:05 PM EST up reply actions

Well...

I don’t know, since I’m not a top level cyclist (or anything else for that matter). Just going by what AC said. It gave me the impression that it was more a function of the change in equipment (i.e., transferring more power to the pedals or more efficiently) and not that he was physically in as good of shape as he was last year at this time.

All of that is to say that I take your point.

by MambaFan on Feb 16, 2010 6:43 PM EST up reply actions

Ok thanks for sharing your impression.

I wasn’t completely sure how to make sense of what you originally posted, but now I have a better idea.

I remember last year

going into this race, Bert was saying he was there just for training blah blah blah….and I actually believe he wasn’t targeting it, no need for those bags of sand here right?
Interesting to see what kind of form he’s in.

Bert is the biggest sandbagger ever. There is now way he will be able to keep himself from attacking once the road goes up.

Perhaps he is sandbagging. He has said some conflicting things: not as much training as last year, but he’s training numbers are better than they were at the same time last year. But I do expect him to give it a go on Stage 3.

I hope Levi Leipheimer gives Bert a good run for his money here.

Contador cleaned up wherever he went last year (Paris-Nice excepted, although he did win 2 stages), so it’d be nice to see him not have everything his own way for the whole year again. And no doubt Radio Shack and Bruyneel will be gunning to take their first opportunity to but Contador in his place

Yeah or Kloden

Either/Or, I just think it’ll be interesting being the first battle of Radio Shack vs Contador. Although I remember reading somehwere in an interview with Kloden that he just doesn’t like being a team leader and he’s more than happy to be an uber-domestique. For purportedly one of the best stage race riders in the world he’s won very few stage races in the last few races. Tour de Romandie a couple of years ago is the only one that springs to mind. Maybe he likes is that way? Wish I could remember where I read that interview.

No

That was a quote from the start of last year in response to a question about being on a team with Lance Armstrong and Alberto Contador being team leaders.

I can only presume his attitude hasn’t changed, as he’s one year older and his team is almost identical, bar Contador of course. Maybe he’ll be given leadership roles in some of the races which Contador raced for Astana last year, like Paris-Nice or the Basque Country, or indeed the Volta ao Algarve, I suppose we’re about to find out/

I have respect for guys like Carlos and Thor. It makes it even easier to work for them when they’re two superstars in the sport and they’re so down to earth. I know from experience that other superstars can be real assholes.--Heinrich Haussler
